potency··on Cloudflare silently deleted my DNS records
Cloudflare lost my support when they started de-platforming people for holding opinions they didn't agree with. Censorship outside of strictly legal bounds should not be tolerated from a company as powerful as Cloudflare.
potency··on It’s crunch time for Getty Images, and for photographers
I had the same experience. Had my website designed by a designer, then a few years later received a threatening letter saying that if I didn't fork over 4-figures for a small image that they used, they'd come after me. I ignored the letter and several follow-ups and never heard from them again, but I could absolutely see how they could intimidate a small business to pay up.
potency··on The 2016 Election
Could I please, pretty please with a cherry on top, have one sanctuary that isn't infested with "Vote for X, because Y is unacceptable"? It's already been done everywhere else ad nauseam.
potency··on Super Logout
Well that was annoying.
potency··on Using Google without a Google+ profile
Finally! I've been shutting down the daily popup to convert my YouTube account into a Google+ Page for years. I had a feeling if I waited long enough, they'd stop asking. Hurray!
potency··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2014)
Estimated salary?
potency··on Mexican Protest Site Censored by GoDaddy with the U.S. Embassy's Help
After the SOPA fiasco, nobody should be doing business with GoDaddy. Back then I was recommended http://nearlyfreespeech.net/ and have been happy with their domain services thus far. Even though I don't have anything worthy of federal controversy being hosted, I'm a peace with my money going to a company that respects freedom of ALL speech.
potency··on The first Bitcoin post on HN
Bitcoin has had the ability to make nearly everyone look foolish at one point or another. Try not to kick yourself too hard over it.
potency··on CES2011: The end of the PC era
I think the biggest difference is that mainframe customers were primarily limited to large businesses, whereas the PC has gained the mindshare of the masses in the last 15 years, giving it an inertia unseen before in tech. Unlike the transition from mainframes to PCs, I think that the iTablet/Smartphone market supplements the PC market, rather than outright replacing the core functionality provided by PCs.
potency··on CES2011: The end of the PC era
I disagree. The PC era is evolving, not ending. How many people still have and use a traditional desktop or laptop computer at home? Microsoft is filling a growing demand for an OS on smaller form factor devices by supporting ARM processors with the next release of Windows, but the traditional PC market is still alive and kicking, its just not "cool" anymore; it's seen as more of a utilitarian tool than a novelty at this point, whereas smartphones and iTablets currently retain the novelty factor, thus their pervasiveness at CES.
potency··on Ask HN: How do you keep yourself motivated?
There was a post I saved recently that had some great responses: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1551121
