potench··on Taco Bell drops website, goes app-only
I would guess that more people probably visited tacobell.com today than on any other day in its history... and all that traffic is funneled to install Taco Bell's Android or iOS app. Seems to me like a very clever and successful campaign to boost app awareness and installs. As a temporary campaign it's totally brilliant; but the message "#onlyintheapp" is pretty risky as a lot of people might not "get it" and negatively associate Taco Bell with technological regression. It's ironic and a little post-modern that the site hosts a message about it's own non-existence and by doing so becomes the primary source of downloads for the app.
potench··on Datacoup – Unlock the Value of Your Personal Data
Can't find many reviews (1) of the service provided, and for some reason I'm wary of the responsibility of selling my own data. Has anyone tried this service?

potench··on The new X-Men movie explained in Git
I think you should mention that 1973 wolverine enlists young punk Quicksilver (1000x developer) who force pushes a ton of undocumented, yet amazing, features with little to no commit messages, then sadly disappears.
potench··on PHỞ: Automated workflow for front-end
Nice work releasing your FE environment setup; couple of questions: "The most used preprocessor with a kick-ass mixin library" Is this true? I haven't looked for actual numbers, but most FE devs I talk to use sass. We use node-sass + autoprefixer and it compiles orders of magnitude faster than compass+sass and means you don't have a dependency on ruby (or php like Less). Also, gulp is much faster than grunt which is especially noticeable on large projects.
potench··on My website was stolen by a hacker and I got it back
Curious why this is being down voted? Is it because namecheap does not offer 2FA? Seems to simply be answering the question above.
potench··on Why we left AngularJS
If you're coming from python, I'd recommend the 'swig' template library. Django syntax in node and client-side.
potench··on Dataset: Ten Years of NFL Plays Analyzed, Visualized, Quizzified
I recently joined nfl.com as a FE dev; I see a lot of 404s on Game Center data feeds. The feeds are being requested past the end of the data (the feed tells you where to look for new data until last feed returns 200 with no data - beyond that it's a 404). Not sure how to reduce the 404s, suppose we could document the feeds and make them openly available. Hmm.

I like finding projects in the wild that do creative things with nfl.com data. This guy is building an Arduino Fantasy Football trophy: https://github.com/sambrenner/future-trophy And this person built an OSX app using score strip XML for current scores: https://github.com/kchau/NFL-Menu

potench··on Building an open source Nest
How does the thermostat control temperature? Am I crazy, I feel like I'm missing a section on how this device connects to the central air, Ac, heater, fan or something that can affect temperature. Under hardware: "relays to control the furnace and the fan." But I don't see details on the relay.
potench··on Interviewing as a Front-End Engineer in San Francisco
A coworker and I wrote a script that's been through a few iterations based on feedback and tailored to whatever company I'm hiring for. Based on the participants self-rating (1-10) you can ask increasingly more nuanced questions in each area of CSS, HTML, and JS. Here's the front-end interview script I use: https://gist.github.com/potench/e71e09c882628054c119 So far it seems to do a good job at promoting conversation and identifying thoughtful and talented FE developers.
potench··on Download a copy of your Gmail and Google Calendar data
"Got Your Back" https://code.google.com/p/got-your-back/ is a pretty awesome python script that downloads/backs-up all your gmail to your hard drive. I've used it to backup 6 years of work email before leaving the job - then created a new gmail account and used GYB to push all those emails back onto an archive account (for easy indexing just in case I ever need to reference an old email).
potench··on Dissecting Coin's Massively Successful Product Launch
"ShareThis has 30 day cookies on 95% of the US Internet population, so I was able to easily run an Insight Report of a couple of hundred social actions around relevant terms like "coin," "coin wallet" and "credit card"" Ok, first, yikes! I figured AdBlock would block 3rd party scripts like ShareThis. And second, how do these cookies enable you to run Insight Reports - what data source are they using - just interactions done via ShareaThis, common public social Apis (open-graph), or is there other data these cookies give you access to?
potench··on Show HN: Don't forget useful Hacker News articles, retain by ReRead'ing later
This functionality exists - Click the up-arrow to the left of the article, it will log it in saved-stories and you can reread it later. Added bonus is that you +1 the article so others know you found it worthwhile.
potench··on Pixel-perfect timing attacks with HTML5
A few modern form features like placeholder text, required, and input type-casting for email, tel, number, and date reduce the need for JavaScript if you're willing to let the experience degrade pretty drastically on legacy browsers.

On a side note, I found the clip art at the top of the white papers distracting. Formatting, spacing, class names such as "nav", value="passwo".

potench··on Show HN: The Choice – An online programming puzzle RPG
Do you have a link for speaker.js? I found "Speak-js" (https://github.com/mattytemple/speak-js) which is also emscripten-compiled from a C++ speech synthesizer. Same thing? Also, great game thanks for sharing with us; I very much enjoyed it.
potench··on Show HN: The Choice – An online programming puzzle RPG
Spoiler: Curious what other people did here. My approach on each step was to simply "test" some code to see what happened before attempting to solve the puzzle. I tested `@xzoor.isTrue(0)` just to see... not very creative but it works for finding the lying guard.

I used the same approach to test the last puzzle (#ship) and did: `for n in @numans n.board(@vehicle) @vehicle.fly(#3127)` which ends the game (even though this doesn't satisfy the puzzle).

potench··on Oculus Rift co-founder killed by gang trying to escape police
The way I read it, gang member Gerardo Diego Ayala was killed by a police officer. Then Victor Sanchez and 2 unidentified subjects fled the scene in a car. It's unclear what "officer involved shooting" means, but that's how I took it...

potench··on I Stand With Trolls
Orth was a Microsoft employee discussing rumored Microsoft decisions. I doubt he would have been fired if the discussion were about Playstation decisions.
potench··on I’m Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. AMA
He has some pretty insightful responses in general, but I really enjoyed this gem:

Q: What's the cheapest thing that gives you most pleasure? A: kids, cheeseburgers... Q: where are you acquiring cheap kids? A: the stork

potench··on The Pinboard Investment Co-Prosperity Cloud
If you manage to get a photo of yourself sealing the envelope with said photo of you sealing the envelope inside of the envelope... then we might have a winner. Could call it EscherGram
potench··on US patent lawsuits now dominated by 'trolls'
What I don't understand is how you protect yourself as it doesn't seem feasible to wallow through preexisting patents hoping to not find a patent that may not exist. It appears as though these companies wait until you're most vulnerable (have successfully implemented something patented) before suing. I understand that you're saying some companies have legitimate claim to base their entire business around lawsuits for patents; but their profitability relies on a business model that seems to promote laying in wait under a bridge until the victim is most vulnerable... Like a troll.
potench··on Gmail.com was down

potench··on NASA will text you whenever the International Space Station passes overhead
Check out the ISS Detector. It notifies you when the International Space Station is visible to you with the naked eye based on your location, IIS location, and weather conditions. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.runar.issd...
potench··on GitLab, open source github clone, reaches 3.0
I'm confused by one thing. I found this awesome jpg checked in on the GitLab Django demo project: http://demo.gitlabhq.com/uploads/note/attachment/2449/687474... Seems like everything else on the demo repo requires me to log in but I can access this file without authorization... Why is that? Found it in the Django demo project attachments tab: http://demo.gitlabhq.com/django/files which requires login.

It's gloriously ironic! A photo mocking Rails security attached to a private repo... that's not secure.
