potatosoup··on Supercharge your Sublime Text 3 to increase your productivity
I gave Atom an honest chance for a couple of months and went back to Sublime. Don't understand how people have the energy to put up with an editor that randomly gets sluggish when typing, hogs RAM, crashes spontaneously (requiring a restart), and chokes on large files.
potatosoup··on Staying with the US Digital Service
And convert, like Dave Chappelle (to Muslim) or Trump's daughter (to Judaism)
potatosoup··on Japanese toilet industry agrees to standardize complex bidet controls
I'm part Jewish but I also live in Asia and I see the "swastikas" here all the time. Completely different meaning, no negative connotation. It's not the symbol that matters, but what people are trying to represent with it.

It's just like the word "hacker" that meant scary things in the 1990s and "cool and hip" in the last 5-10 years.

Also see: Pepe the Frog. Some people tried to brand it as a hate symbol because a very small group of bad people were using it, but it's just a cartoon frog.

The registry was already there under Obama:

Also, it would be silly to assume that we didn't have a database of "country from" for immigrants or visitors. "Muslim" is not a country, it's a religion, so you'd need some serious behavior profiling for that -- probably FB/Google are ones you should be after. (Disclaimer: am immigrant, am minority.)

potatosoup··on Moral panic over fake news hides the real enemy – the digital giants
If anything, the content of the e-mail leaks (that the intelligence report from the other day confirmed to be authentic, although this was also known from verifying DKIM signatures) had a bigger impact.

OS X Sierra (10.12) adoption chart

Looks like people are split 30/30/30 between the last three versions with many holdouts.

Things look way better in iOS land (76% on latest version):

potatosoup··on Moral panic over fake news hides the real enemy – the digital giants
The sudden obsession with "fake news" started last November after the election. Why then?

The big media also seems very discontent that Trump uses social media to communicate his news with people directly, bypassing the middlemen.

potatosoup··on Did Media Literacy Backfire?
FWIW National Enquirer etc. existed for ages and no one seemed to mind. There's plenty of fake news to go around...

What about "I am a NYT reader and I read it every day with the hopes to tell me who is a better candidate" and I read it, diligently, not knowing that the information is being fed from one candidate? Isn't that lousy?

potatosoup··on Did Media Literacy Backfire?
There's a question of journalistic integrity.

If you read NYT as I do you expect to be told "the whole story" and not be reading a glorified crafted PR statement. I think that's irresponsible and as good as fake

potatosoup··on Did Media Literacy Backfire?
The DNC strategy was to amplify Trump because they thought he'd be an easy-lose candidate, and so they did.

http://www.salon.com/2016/11/09/the-hillary-clinton-campaign...

And the DNC/Clinton campaign worked closely with a number of outlets (like NYT) to publish various stories.

https://theintercept.com/2016/10/09/exclusive-new-email-leak...

This comes from the leaked e-mails, not hearsay.

potatosoup··on Did Media Literacy Backfire?
Myself (a liberal, NYT reader for decades), was upset when I realized that the publication was pushing Clinton so hard without telling the other side of the story. And then leaks confirmed that the press was, err, too friendly with the candidate (sharing articles before they were published, passing on debate questions, staging interviews...) Sigh.
potatosoup··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Congrats! One thing the post didn't answer is where you got the data (IMO, the most difficult part for this project). Are you using MaxMind or something else behind the scenes?
potatosoup··on Google Trusted Contacts
Useful feature, yes, but I see this as a license to track locations of more people at all times. Also see: Uber's recent "always track" update
potatosoup··on Breitbart news site blocked by ad exchange
Correct.
potatosoup··on Breitbart news site blocked by ad exchange
Think we can all agree that the people you are describing are trash. My point is that they are a fortunately very small non-statistically significant group and their beliefs do not represent the beliefs of most Americans (yes, including Trump voters.)
potatosoup··on Breitbart news site blocked by ad exchange
Have to be careful with definitions. There are some fringe groups of white supremacists and their ilk which pretty much everyone (including Trump) wants to crawl back to their cave. There is also a diverse group of people of all backgrounds who want political change and are tired of both dems and reps. The latter group is magnitudes larger, and yet the former group seems to get all the attention. Why?
potatosoup··on Breitbart news site blocked by ad exchange
As an immigrant from the (once) Soviet Union, the current inability among my Silicon Valley/tech friends to say anything but pro-left views scares me. Even hinting that I may want something other than NYT-like viewpoints seems to cause people to bring out the pitchforks.
potatosoup··on Deleting the golang subreddit
It's a long running joke on the sub after being constantly accused of being bots (and probably bots created by Russian hackers closely working with Trump.)
potatosoup··on Deleting the golang subreddit
As one of many T_D users, I sure love to be called a Russian bot. So, citation needed.

Edit: to people downvoting, please elaborate.

potatosoup··on New immigration rules make it easier for Americans to work and stay in Canada
From a fellow immigrant, please don't believe everything NYT/CNN tell you (i.e. daily fearmongering).
potatosoup··on [dead]
>> psychopathic, sexist, racist, bigoted, xenophobic, poisonous demagogue

I didn't vote for Trump, but it's a high time we stop with NYT/CNN/etc. popularized name calling.

potatosoup··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
NYT, for one, often reiterated that Trump has no policy proposals despite many of these (e.g. https://www.donaldjtrump.com/policies) being out for awhile.

As a (legal) immigrant, I have to remind you that there is legal immigration, and illegal, let's not confuse them.
potatosoup··on A Formal Security Analysis of the Signal Messaging Protocol
Installed Signal, wanted to use it. First step is to connect with my phone number and there is no other way to create an account. This is an unfortunate privacy-blind choice for what otherwise could be a great platform.
potatosoup··on Postmates Secures $141M in a ‘Super, Super Difficult’ Fundraising Effort
That's fair and respectable. E.g. Martin Shkreli would probably not be a suitable investor for you.

However: "He has a plethora of public comments revealing a shocking lack of empathy or caring about the greater good." Very much "citation needed." If anything, I've seen Thiel genuinely want to improve our world.

potatosoup··on Postmates Secures $141M in a ‘Super, Super Difficult’ Fundraising Effort
That's an unusual stance for someone who is a CEO of a company for "rekindling passion for public service in millions of local government employees" and is worrisome.

You wouldn't support people like these government employees to have freedom of political opinion?

potatosoup··on Typing Chinese like English
In fact popular IMEs like Sogou do this and also get updated to recognize names of famous people, movies, etc.

You can even type abbreviations for common phrases, like "cflm" and it'll figure out you meant chi-fan-le-ma 吃飯了嗎

potatosoup··on Ask HN: Why are SIM cards still a thing?
Wouldn't e.g. a username and password accomplish the same thing as what you're describing?
potatosoup··on Final – A credit card built for the 21st century
Curious too how this works. "We wrote a lot of code" doesn't actually answer the original question...
potatosoup··on How to Build the Future with Sam Altman
I don't think this has to be a negative question, and can be constructive (positive) if worded differently. If anything, I'd want to learn what I can do to follow a similar path

I remember reading PG saying that Sama is one of the brightest entrepreneurs he has met, and I always wanted to hear the backstory since Loopt is the only data point we have from the outside.
