It's not so clear cut. The Republicans may be trying to put breaks on the never ending money drain that this project was. FWIW Trump looks to be very pro-High speed rail in general [1] esp as he is going to be pushing through his proposed 1TB infrastructure overhaul.

> He represents a real threat to the safety of women, minorities, and immigrants

As an immigrant myself, I keep seeing famous people write this, but I want some kind of "citation needed." What plans does this actually refer to?

Same here. Extremely annoying and I hit this often.
potatosoup··on Deleting Uber is the least you can do
While Uber (probably) had it coming, it's still annoying that the Internet as of late has turned into scores of "famous person writes a long virtuous post proclaiming how some other famous person is less virtuous."

I want my Internet back.

(Stopped using Uber after they changed iOS app location tracking choices to only "Always" or "Never," instead of original "While using the app")

Bezos bought WaPo and that has been his anti-Trump mouthpiece for the past months. Doesn't need to make a separate statement.

Where were all these millionaires and billionaires when we were droning people in some of these countries? They all donated to Clinton's election campaign and under her watch as Secretary of State we dropped thousands of bombs. They supported the pro-war candidate.

Why is restricting our borders considered so inhumane as to cause an Internet-wide outcry, while killing people for years hadn't?

potatosoup··on Standing up for what's right
I'm sorry you're being downvoted (even though you're off by a couple of countries). These were useful and scary stats. 26,000+ bombs...

I also posted this above, but the specific list is seven countries DHS deemed to be high-risk around February 2016, denying them Visa Waiver privileges:

"Have you traveled to, or been present in, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen..."

potatosoup··on Standing up for what's right
Trivia: the specific seven countries are ones deemed by DHS to be "high risk" in February 2016, during the Obama administration, so it's not an arbitrary pick by Trump [1]:

"Have you traveled to, or been present in, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen..."

I'd respect some of these people (like SamA, and Zuckerberg, and others) much more if they were consistent in their views. These millionaires/billionaires who supported Sec. of State Clinton during her election, fully knowing the loss of Muslim life her actions caused abroad, now virtue signaling about Trump -- I just don't know how to take them seriously.
potatosoup··on Time to Take a Stand
> this disgusting, offensive action

Why is this a "disgusting, offensive action," but droning and killing of Muslim people by Obama/Secretary of State Clinton/others not? Shouldn't actual, tragic loss of life evoke a bigger outrage than revising our border policy?

potatosoup··on Time to Take a Stand
This is not a Muslim ban. This is a temporary suspension for immigration from certain countries (many of which we are currently droning, which in itself should've been an outrage years ago.) No one called for action on Malaysia, for example.
potatosoup··on Time to Take a Stand
We've been killing Muslim families in these countries for years, even under Obama (a Nobel Peace Prize winner.)

Like or hate Trump, I'm surprised that now is the time to be outraged. It should've been ages ago.

Former green card holder here. A green card (or a visa) gives you a privilege to entry, not a right.

Like what? If anything, more jobs instead of more and more social programs would do a lot to actually get people to a decent livelihood...

potatosoup··on Dow Hits 20000 for First Time
Not strictly true, or he wouldn't be working with Elon Mask, for example. [1] However what's certain is that he wants to achieve US independence from Middle Eastern oil so as to stop enriching Saudi princes.

potatosoup··on The Secret Agenda of a Facebook Quiz
How is this different from "everything Trump is doing is an evil Russian conspiracy" claim that most media seems to be pushing these days? E.g. check out the front page of r/politics. I'm sure Trump will suck or fail in many ways (as all elected leaders do), but we've long time ago lost objectivity.
potatosoup··on The Secret Agenda of a Facebook Quiz
Interestingly enough, the same pollsters are now saying that Trump has a 37% or something approval rating. And Obama went out with a 60%+ approval rating.

Until they find a way to poll a significant slice of the population truly representative of the electorate, I'm surprised people can take them seriously. Since we're on HN, there is a startup idea here somewhere.

(Edited to remove an electoral hypothesis, so that we can discuss polls and not politics.)

> In the immediate wake of Mr. Trump’s surprise election

How was it a surprise? With huge crowd sizes at his rallies (that NYT didn't show, but RSBN for example did), strong populist message that worked, and the awful candidate the other side put up (while sadly destroying Bernie), I was not surprised.

I appreciate easy customization as much as any dev, but, in this case, I don't know if that's an advantage when as a result Atom doesn't do its primary task terribly well: stay open all day, let me type code.
