potatosalad1··on Ask HN: How do you feel about Meta's name?
Cringe
potatosalad1··on Responding to recruiter emails with GPT-3
Now have it automatically negotiate a salary range high enough for you to consider interviewing.
potatosalad1··on Cause of homelessness? Not drugs or mental illness, study says
C != c, etc

Disappointed they don't seem to have controlled for weather. And that they use the fact that there aren't huge numbers of homeless in Detroit as "evidence" of anything other than it would be really really shitty to be homeless in Detroit.

Meanwhile temperate climates where it's decent outside year round is also hugely associated with high housing prices.

potatosalad1··on Only 6.8% of adults have optimal cardiometabolic health
Why is a vegan diet better for diabetics? Sugar is vegan after all...
potatosalad1··on Ask HN: If you’ve considered homeschooling, what’s stopping you?
Does your wife have an education background too? If not, why not take on the teaching yourself if homeschooling is important to you?
potatosalad1··on The Blind Spots Low-Code Development That Will Create Technical Debt
Which of the low/no code tools have the highest support for these solutions?
potatosalad1··on “Google” programmers. How one idiot hired a couple more idiots
I'm a designer who codes in this way. I can mock out a bells and whistles prototype that appears to work splendidly enough to test with users, but in reality I'm just hooking together libraries and pasted code. I have been doing this for 10 years, enough debugging savvy to "learn" React in 2 weeks but do I actually know how any of it works on a deeper level? Heck no.
potatosalad1··on The most satisfying checkbox
Only tangentially related, but some months back Amazon added an animation to make their user icon wave at you on page load and it makes me grimace every time. Given that I use Amazon begrudgingly while hating the company and what it stands for it feels like it's mocking me.
potatosalad1··on I'm making drugs for cats
Strangely enough it didn't, he still eats dry cat food and just crunches it with his gums a little. He is totally fine now aside from sometimes looking a little derpy with his gums
potatosalad1··on I'm making drugs for cats
My cat got bartonella which caused this condition and had to have all his teeth removed. Prior to the surgery he was in absolute misery, and the only treatment was steroids that did little and aren't meant for longtime use. The surgery was several thousand dollars, out of reach for a lot of families. An effective treatment for this condition would be great!
potatosalad1··on Price shocks in formative years scar consumption for life
But an iPad can replace a hundred toys in terms of the amount of variety in entertainment. Just like it can replace thousands of CDs and books. If we're talking wastefulness I think it comes out ahead.
potatosalad1··on Amazon Prime Air prepares for drone deliveries
Will the drones be recording?
potatosalad1··on A Face Search Engine Anyone Can Use Is Alarmingly Accurate

potatosalad1··on Amazon suggests user delete tweet showing how much data they collect
The addresses are whole foods stores
potatosalad1··on Power imbalances and sex
"The sexual invisibility many men feel as teenagers is a trauma that will live with them for the rest of their lives."

... meanwhile according to this logic women are only valuable when they're just out of puberty and then they spend the next 70 something years invisible but yes let's talk about male trauma

potatosalad1··on uBlacklist: Blocks specific sites from appearing in Google search results
These days I just search Reddit to get real people's opinions on a product. Way more trustworthy than Amazon reviews or random blogs.
potatosalad1··on uBlacklist: Blocks specific sites from appearing in Google search results
Recently installed this because I'm learning React and there are so many awful results in the first page of Google search for anything related to React. Many sites that are actually scraped from Stack overflow with no reference to the original post, or Medium posts that are paywalled. Bye bye.
potatosalad1··on More than you want to know about gift cards
That's the best because it saves the mom time to do research, which once you're all making decent money is the true gift.
potatosalad1··on Show HN: I made a movie recommendation app based on your mood
This didn't work for me at all. Of 8 or so recommendations it included "Red" "Blue" and "White". Huh? It's also pretty useless without including a year or link to an imbd page.
potatosalad1··on Amazon puts its own “brands” first above better-rated products
When you see that, and it's something you do want to buy, go to AliExpress and buy it directly from China for half off.
potatosalad1··on Show HN: Peer to Peer Recruiting?
Typo in the very first sentence: yourhiring
potatosalad1··on Pinterest bans weight loss ads in first for major social networks
Guessing you aren't female? Pinterest is huuuuge with women in their 30s and later (not sure about the younger ones)
potatosalad1··on Best Buy, Why Does Your Support Person Sound Terrified?
Local appliance stores usually have models in stock. And offer delivery for a fee. See if you can find one instead if going to a big box store.
potatosalad1··on I was let go for refusing to deploy a dark pattern
Newsletter popup that asks for email address and if you click Cancel or X doesn't save it: annoying but not a dark pattern

Popup that asks for email address that doesn't have an 'x' (or the 'x' doesn't appear for a while) and the email address field secretly records what the user types and even though they clicked cancel their information was secretly shared: dark pattern

potatosalad1··on Tiny Acquisitions
Doesn't load for me
potatosalad1··on River Runner: drop a raindrop anywhere in the USA, watch where it ends up
This is very cool. It would be nice if it showed how long the path is, so you could play a mini game to try and find the longest path.
