posterboy··on Kraftwerk issued their own pocket calculator synthesizer (2019)
funny little novelty gadgets, which are useful if you don't know any better and have too much money – the definition of hipster.

Get a cheap editor with free plugins, there are enough around. Or get a Volca if you must.

posterboy··on Crocodiles are alarmingly attuned to the cries of human infants
huhu, "alarmingly"
posterboy··on Speakers of different languages remember visual scenes differently
"Got it!" is indeed a very common expression in this situation. It does not exclude locomotion in parallel. We also here a lot of "ugh"s and "ah"s in Tennis or Martial Arts.

This is a slippery slope where some will say this is no real word and that's not syntax unless you define language in fivethousand words on normed paper all while catching the damn ball. That's just them crying look at me.

posterboy··on Ask vs. Guess Culture
One could argue that guessing correctly does minimize the inefficient communication.

I'm not sure this joke is appropriate: Man and wife sleep in separate beds, the wife says. A friend asks, so how do you ... you know? If he wants to, he whistles. And if you want to? Well, I go over and ask if he whistled.

Yes, I was thinking closeness to the Polish border must have something to do with it, as is also pertinent with Tesla's giga factory.
posterboy··on Wendelstein 7-X: Gigajoule energy turnover generated for eight minutes
They could go longer. 7-8 mins is an arbitrary cut off out of fear that something might break (quench), knowing that enough data has been gathered for the time being.

The first Alternativlos Podcast of two conducted with the leader of the Wendelstein X project relates how certain magnetic coils were purpose made by a kind of emeritus engineer in Swiss. Which seems corollary to the common wisdom about EMI, it's magic, so the manufacturer must be a wizard.

On the other hand it is reminiscent of a Georgian I met who used to be occupied with winding regular tire sized coils by hand, for over land transmission lines. This is chirurgical precision, literally hand-craft.

We do a lot of thinking with our hands. It stands to reason, metaphorically speaking, that Wendelstein is an experiment to gain hands on experience. Therein lies the difference to megalomanic projects that exceed initial estimates, eg. BER airport, which are a running gag by now.

Insolvency means the investment returned no profits so investors on those projects stopped paying. It likely doesn't mean that the cheques bounced on liabilities. And it obviously doesn't mean that investment in this space had to stop.

Suppose you need automation for machinery in a cutting edge fab, that would be much further in the future? They could ship from Taiwan, so the idea that this is a back up does not sound entirely wrong. Sounds like fan-fiction, too, true enough.

AMD is already there and Intel is building in Lower Saxony. Must be something about the region, perhaps the chemistry since the Erzgebirge has a history in mining. Meisner Porcelain for example beat Venice and replaced good old China (pun intended).

> No one walked back anything.

I'm not sure about that (haven't heard this story).

My impression is that EU sticks to discretion very much, and they aren't free from corruption. The US on the other hand is not known to play nice with matters of law in international affairs (Edit: shouldn't have said "international law").

Taiwan is a partner was the point, I believe. Of course they aren't going to give away the crown jewels either.

posterboy··on Harvard ethics professor allegedly fabricated multiple studies
That's shifting the goal post and it suffers from survivor bias. The individual decision is met by few people. The policy is instated by very different people and informed by many factors outside the control of psychology, where false positives don't invalidate the whole system if the alternative is a slippery slope with draconic punishments – a paradox because the most severe punishment could amount to manslaughter if not murder.

Linear Algebra is a huge ... space?

And then there's all the other algebras. I'm not sure what you are thinking, like, do you not know matrix multiplication you had better get a clue.

posterboy··on Harvard ethics professor allegedly fabricated multiple studies
> Since there are no firm truths

that's bullshit. Classic liar's paradox and the solution is that sentence is ungrammatical in a strong sense of universal grammar ... which I can't prove, and I'm not philosopher enough to concern myself with lists of formal fallacies to make up for it

posterboy··on Harvard ethics professor allegedly fabricated multiple studies
Or Psychology is difficult and having passed the the bar is not a quality controlled guarantee, same as for example nautical engineering isn't. That's not enough reason to say that boats don't float.

Calling that a "straight" line with a straight face is so Euclidean. Get over it.

Shortest distance between two points is what it is.

posterboy··on AI will slightly drain the swamp of higher ed
Bit of a bland coinage. It's a kind of anchoring, which is a fairly difficult tolic in psychology.

Shifting the goal post is a realistic measure on a slippery sloap.

Chess isn't that different, inasmuch as memorizing openings and end games is part of the training.

> Components are not ideal, but today, many of them, operated within their limits, are pretty close to ideal

Sure, but the bigger insight in the first place would be that all measurements have error tolerance. Which is a slightly different topic, so I'm not sure that it's the last book I'll ever need.

In particular reading on switch mode powersupplies it sounds like inductors, resonant circuits and electro magnetic interference are black magic. And this field developed a lot since the first book.

to be fair, google translate misidentifies a lot of input if instructions are unclear.

And I think it's acceptable that they do not offer transcription for all the foreign scripts. Though helpful it would be, it's also very likely to make many mistakes.

posterboy··on The Paratethys Sea was the largest lake in Earth’s history
> where and how could a larger lake have existed?

It exists somewhere in the gap of your logic. The undeying complaint is against the superlativ, and not against "largest" but "in Earth's history", which equates to everrr.

It's clearly click-bait.

posterboy··on Korean as a Concatenative, Stack-Oriented Language (2017)
Perhaps that's because it is not inherently Linguistics?
posterboy··on Korean as a Concatenative, Stack-Oriented Language (2017)
I'm not sure if that's inherent.

One problem is that Korean syllable structure is not as easy as one os lead to believe, from what I heard. And whether syllable is a meaningful unit is debatable.

posterboy··on Korean as a Concatenative, Stack-Oriented Language (2017)
All I learned from reading this is that your translation skills are abysimal.

I only know the script and can tell that the encoded information is a little more complex.

> You can process and even start answering someone before they've finished their sentence

That would likely break the Curry-Howard-Correspondance. So I can only concure, it is "incredible".

Good on you if you reached a point where you don't notice the difference.

I don't know about asphalt but I've once passed a site with a tar cooker going on that's so extremely pungent I cannot imagine hot asphalt to be particularly appetizing if it is anywhere near that. On the other hand, I know a friend who worked such a machine and he couldn't complain. Also, he smoked cigarettes a lot so cancer was perhaps the least of his worries.
posterboy··on Monolith: The Recommendation System Behind TikTok
The point of the original poster was that those videos have zero views or low rating - not popular by any means - and they appear out of place in the stream.

Youtube does it too, and my best guess is that it is a form of supervised training and the real question is who's being trained.

> people noticed physical differences between groups of people but weren’t applying racist concepts to them.

There are enough counter examples, I don't even know where to begin. Of course it is useless (as I heared a historian claim only recently) to apply the modern concepts of racism and nationalism before the 20th century.

FWIW, there could be no b-but my genepool because they had no concept of genetics. Their idea of genus is however much more detailed and often times entirely made up.
