porjo··on Australia’s gains in wheat-farm productivity
> They kind of have free land available to anyone who wants to farm.

Australia is vast and empty. In the interior, rivers are few and far between and the landscape is flat and featureless. Any 'free' land is going to be essentially desert. Even if you could grow something on it, you wouldn't want to live there.

porjo··on Structured Errors in Go (2022)
The article is from 2022 which predates slog in stdlib. Article also references Wrap() & Wrapf() which are also not part of stdlib (odd they don't mention that imo).
porjo··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
Ha, I happened upon an interesting video earlier today on this topic! https://youtu.be/4MzHt_YLnjw
porjo··on ZFS: Apple's new filesystem that wasn't (2016)
This presentation from 2022 covers the topic: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v8sl8gj9UnA

Note: sound drops out for a couple minutes at 1:30 mark but comes back.

Thanks, I got a better result with this than Anyvoice.
porjo··on Clay – UI Layout Library
This. It is a rare and unique thing for the author to a) have the skills to put together such a presentation and b) take the time to do so. Thankyou.
porjo··on CORS Is Stupid
I run into CORS issues often when fetching RSS feeds from browser Javascript [0], where the RSS provider has failed to currently set the Access-Control-Allow-Origin header

porjo··on Switch off bad TV settings
Not a smart tv problem specifically, but the inability to adjust volume level while on mute (at least adjust down). I often turn the tv on after the rest of the household has gone to bed and it's way too loud, so I hit mute. But as soon as I hit volume down, sounds comes back on at the initial loud volume! Aargh. Only thing is to navigate away to a silent input, adjust volume, then navigate back to previous channel. Annoying. I have seen this feature once before (Sony I think).

porjo··on Podman Desktop celebrates 500k downloads
I have podman desktop installed just to get podman machine auto started on boot, otherwise I'm using podman within WSL cli. Is there a better way?
porjo··on Victorian (Australia) government bans gas in new homes from 2024
It was commercially viable to deploy residential gas infra in the past (when electricity was a lot cheaper than now!) and yet gas isnt viable now. It doesn't stack up. I don't pretend to know much about the economics of residential gas supply, but I wonder if your high connection charge was a result of costs being spread across fewer customers (driven away by high usage costs).
porjo··on Victorian (Australia) government bans gas in new homes from 2024
The comment about gas being more expensive than electricity seems a bit disingenuous. I was under the impression that Australia has plenty of natural gas reserves, and gas would be cheap if it weren't for failure of government to manage it properly.
porjo··on Go libraries you need to know
For logging, it's worth mentioning the structured logging library slog [0] which looks likely to be accepted for inclusion in the standard library in a future release of Go [1]

porjo··on No more airplane mode? EU to allow calls on flights
While filling my car's fuel tank recently I noticed a sign saying mobile phone use was ok, just not while filling the tank. Seems reasonable. I remember the days when use of a cell phone anywhere near the bowser was strictly verboten! (Australia)

porjo··on Web automation: Don't use Selenium, use Playwright
Thanks. I've found Chromedp [0] to be a good Selenium replacement when programming in Go. Used in conjunction with headless-shell [1] you can deploy a Go app into a container and do the testing all within the same container with low overhead.

porjo··on Enhanced noise suppression in Jitsi Meet
For a large proportion of users I expect the audio/video to be peer to peer thanks to WebRTC. Other traffic (for that set of users) should be minimal.
porjo··on I spent $3k on a Samsung Smart TV and all I got were ads and unwanted content
Not necessarily. Turn off NAT on your router. ISP router then needs a static route sending traffic for your LAN via your router's WAN IP.

porjo··on TP-Link band-steers 2,4 to 5 GHz Wi-Fi even when the radio is off
I was just reviewing the TP-Link EAP225 which supports OpenWRT. And DAWN [0] can be used with OpenWRT for handling band steering. Does anyone have experience using it? Can you recommend it?

porjo··on Astrofox – Turn Audio into Videos
Looks cool! Any plans to support headless operation? What I had in mind was to design a scene in the UI (for example a daily podcast), then on command line take the project file and the audio file and generate the video file output.

porjo··on Adventures with Verizon FiOS IPv6
On a related topic, I've been scratching my head over an ipv6 config issue using Openwrt on my router and Fedora Linux as the client. If I configure my client to use SLAAC all works well - it gets an address and default gateway. If I configure the client to use DHCP it gets an address but no default gateway. I can see via packet dump that the client doesn't send a router solicitation when configured for DHCP ... Is this working as designed? How is a DHCP client supposed to get a default gateway if not via RA?
porjo··on SSO should be table stakes
I have the same frustration at current $BIG_CORP employer. It's maddening to think how much productivity must be lost by 100s of engineers being interrupted many times a day by this! Granted, I know nothing about how it is implemented, but I struggle to comprehend why this is necessary - the SSO client knows I authenticated literally minutes go from this device...how is that not sufficient verification!?
