pope_meat··on Pining for a De-Googled Smartphone
>This also coincided with, in my opinion, a horrible yet unsurprising decision by my former service provider (AT&T) to start locking out service for anyone who switches their SIM card to another device unless that device is on a whitelist. (Other carriers in the US such as Verizon seem to be actively restricting devices in other ways as well, so be sure to check with your carrier before swapping your SIM to a PinePhone.)

Uh, this is concerning, right? I'm not crazy for thinking this is a bad sign for the future?

pope_meat··on Facial recognition technology: How to opt out at the airport
It's worth trying to get at least some of the genie back in the bottle. The laws against CP and automatic fire arms aren't 100% effective either, but that doesn't mean we abandon the idea of trying to regulate the activity completely, does it?
pope_meat··on Facial recognition technology: How to opt out at the airport
Probably the same way you're prevented from selling CP, and fully automatic fire arms out of your home? It won't stop it 100%, but it certainly has an effect.
pope_meat··on Facebook Censored Me For Mentioning Open-Source Social Network Mastodon
I'm looking forward to dreams as a service, with personalized ads sprinkled in. Only 9.99 a month!
pope_meat··on Facebook Censored Me For Mentioning Open-Source Social Network Mastodon
I'm fighting Facebook by not participating. I implore the rest of you to do the same. As we leave, the folks remaining will have less reasons to stay. A trickle can turn in to a torrent. Don't worry about an alternative even, we'll find something new when we do, until then, a bit of a detox from the feed will do us good.
pope_meat··on Some of the most iconic 9/11 news coverage is lost. Blame Adobe Flash
Marion Stokes probably recorded a VHS tape of the news. Her estate left tens of thousands of tapes of TV news from 1970 to 2012. It's probably not lost, but it will take a while to digitize it all.
pope_meat··on Andrew Yang to launch a third party
I was a fan of yang, but then he started harping on "illegal food vendors" in NYC, and I realized he's another tech-bro ghoul.

I'd like my political donation back, yang, if you're reading.

pope_meat··on MDMA reopens child-like “critical periods” in the brain
The biggest risk was probably driving to the drug dealer, these roads are dangerous.
pope_meat··on Mēris botnet, climbing to the record
Thumb print reader that pricks you to make sure you bleed.
pope_meat··on Paid influencers must label some posts as ads, German court rules
That's not how the real world works though. I was raised by the internet because both my parents had to work nonstop just to keep a roof over our heads. We'd need to make a lot of changes to how society functions to allow for that level of parenting.

But hey I turned out okay! (Not really)

pope_meat··on We made a tool that helps to determine leakers of documents
If you're having to dodge the question...

Shame on you, you best hope the tools of oppression are not turned on you one day.

No emotional connotation.

pope_meat··on Biden's Total Financial Surveillance
The sharks helped write the rules, they certainly ain't in violation.

This is normal and good, actually. Yeah, good I say.

Sigh

pope_meat··on Google employee program claims that America is a “system of white supremacy”
This place ain't racist, it's merely a coincidence that the top of the Forbes 500 is very light skinned, and every president but one is the same. Let's also not think about how the next president we elected after the black one famously spread rumors questioning the black presidents birthplace, before running for office and winning.

Coincidence I tell you.

pope_meat··on 20 years after 9/11: Will we ever stop taking our shoes off at airports?
It was all guns rights until the black panthers started arming up, and all the sudden it was "perhaps some sensible limits might be wise"

Pretty hard to miss the intent.

Arm the homeless is what I say when I'm feeling spicy.

pope_meat··on My university sacrificed ideas for ideology, so today I quit
Check their net worth. It's only going up.

To a cynic like me it just seems like they're buying good PR, and it's relatively cheap.

pope_meat··on My university sacrificed ideas for ideology, so today I quit
>his cupidity may at some point be satiated

Will it, though?

pope_meat··on Ask HN: What's the best Linux distro for fullstack development?
Put all the distros you're considering on to note cards and shuffle them. What ever is on top is the best one.
pope_meat··on How do computers generate random numbers?
Hah, thanks for sharing this dot thing, what a bizarre little corner of the internet.
pope_meat··on Tripwire CEO out after tweeting support of Texas abortion law
Without exceptions for rape/incest that argument is pretty weak.
pope_meat··on Man sentenced for charging businesses inflated prices in printer toner scam
>Authorities caught on to the scheme in one case when IDC sent inflated invoices to a southern California storage company that only used typewriters to do business, according to court documents.

...did not expect typewriters

pope_meat··on Cannabis use and myocardial infarction in young adults: a cross-sectional study
It started everywhere, for every liberal hippy mom there was a christian conservative mom home schooling their kid to avoid vaccine requirements of public schools.

This transcends politics, humans are dumb fearful critters.

pope_meat··on Automated hiring software is mistakenly rejecting millions of job candidates
Ah, the efficiency of software. Ain't it grand?
pope_meat··on Rents in San Francisco Are Up 10 Percent
$36,000 a year for rent.

Lol. That's the most I've ever made in a year... before taxes.

I guess it's affordable if you skip eating, healthcare, or other services like cellphone/internet.

Fuck it, might as well be homeless.

pope_meat··on Michael K. Williams, Star of ‘The Wire’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ Found Dead at 54
Omar ain't coming no more :/
pope_meat··on Ask HN: How are you feeling today?
Anxious.
pope_meat··on Researchers studying Facebook misinformation say they were deplatformed
Where do you advertise your Etsy/Shopify business?

I don't use facebook myself, but it's pretty hard to deny that they hold a vital position in the market. You can avoid them out of principle, but you're not setting yourself up for an easy start.

pope_meat··on Researchers studying Facebook misinformation say they were deplatformed
A lot of small business/self employed folks don't have any kind of web presence other than FB/Instagram.

It's not as cut and dry as you're making it out to be.

pope_meat··on Media trust hits new low
I audibly exclaimed "what the actual fuck?!" when I reached that part of the article.

We're in quite a pickle, and I don't know what to do, but I now know to be extremely suspect of axios.

pope_meat··on Media trust hits new low
...who are these people that trust CEOs? How often do you even hear something that comes across as genuine, and not some fluff non-committal bs that says nothing?
pope_meat··on It's not a labor shortage – it's a wage and workers rights shortage
The owner class has gotten really used to having the upper hand in the negotiations, they're not coping well at all.

And to that I say: welcome to the club.
