pope_meat··on I Am Not Satoshi Nakamoto
A fixed supply that always grows in value doesn't encourage investment, just "hodl". And I ain't an economist, but hoarding wealth for the sake of hoarding wealth isn't good for society.

If you have to invent another coin to encourage investment/spending rather than hoarding...well why not use that coin.

I'm not entirely anti-crypto, I think Monero is neat.

pope_meat··on Delta wants other airlines to share 'no-fly' lists of unruly passengers
Hopefully not, but at the present moment everyone* in society is calling for blood over every little* thing.

*Not literally, but it feels that way/my perceived experience.

pope_meat··on China declares cryptocurrency trading illegal, beefs up mining crackdown
It's like we're trapped in a year long groundhogs day loop. Once a year, every year, china bans crypto, and cracks down on miners.
pope_meat··on Delta wants other airlines to share 'no-fly' lists of unruly passengers
A criminal once is a criminal forever.

I don't agree with that idea, but that's effectively how things work, you might find exceptions to the rule, but once your reputation is tainted with a legal charge, it follows you forever within society.

the 13th amendment states that the only acceptable form of slavery is prison labor.

pair that with the fact that the united states is #1 in prisoners per capita, and it's not hard to come to a pretty dark conclusion...

pope_meat··on The smart toilet era is here Ready to share your analprint with big tech?
My pooping opsec is weak, I'm learning. Time to start keeping a bottle of bleach next to the porcelain throne. And perhaps one of those webcam covers that slide open and closed on the anus for when I'm on an untrusted toilet.
pope_meat··on Samoa Scraps Daylight Saving Time
I like to sow chaos and confusion anytime anyone asks if we're gaining or losing an hour with "it's spring back, fall forward!" while grinning like an idiot.
pope_meat··on Workers are often told not to talk about pay. That's not legal
A friend of mine worked as an editor for a news paper. He was a new hire, and a woman who has been working as an editor at the same news paper for 9 years asked him what his salary offer was. It turned out she after 9 years was getting paid $3k less than what he was offered as a new hire.
pope_meat··on Reasons to Quit Social Media
I was raised by fundamentalists, and that was not my experience. Wrong kind of opinions got me surrounded by elders who would attempt to brow beat me in to submission. Towards my late teens I'd spend the entire hour and a half of every Sunday hiding out in the kitchen/dining hall in the back of the building, tending to the pot of coffee, until I was old enough to leave and strike out on my own. I still get panic attacks at the idea of stepping foot in to a religious building. Basically, your experience is far from universal, in my experience.
pope_meat··on FBI says seized fortune was criminals’ loot—owners say: Where’s the proof?

pope_meat··on Ask HN: What activities have worked for you to manage stress?
Guided yoga videos, and then self guided yoga after I've memorized the moves/order. Something about combining active breathing with active movement helps clear the mind.

I tried regular meditation, but my mind kept crowding with anxious thoughts, and taking walks, I was just taking my anxieties for a walk with me.

pope_meat··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
I was, a man drove his car in to the crowd, when people tried to stop him he fired once out of his car. He ran past me on the way to the police line (the police hadn't abandoned the precinct yet).

So, ironically enough, I was there for a shooting that happened while the police were still holding the area.

pope_meat··on Women are nearly half of new gun buyers, study finds
What's the excuse for the shootings that happened in other areas that the police didn't abandon? Perhaps it's because shootings happen regardless?

But you know, you're right, I'll take the news medias version of events, my eyes were lying to me, since what I witnessed doesn't jive with sensationalist news coverage.

CHOP was fine. Walked through there multiple times when it was happening because I was curious, it really does appear to me like media blowing things out of proportion for clicks/views.

I live in the PNW, I've been to the area. If spray paint on a police building is lawless anarchy, alright, I guess, but my best friends girlfriend works literally across the street from the police station depicted, and you know what? It's fine. These stories are bullshit meant to rile you up because fear gets clicks.

Some folks have a different opinion, but these folks seem to be afraid anytime they see a houseless person, or a needle in an alley way, and neither of those problems have been solved with the ever increasing police budgets, just pushed it to a slightly different area, where the outrage starts all over again. There's a problem, sure, but the police ain't the tool to solve them, no matter how much we would like for complex problems to be solved with simple solutions.

pope_meat··on Lawmakers Ask Zuck to Drop 'Instagram for Kids' Since App Made Kids Suicidal
Teen suicides are up by a good bit. FB/Instagram popped up right around the time the trend started going up, perhaps a coincidence, but perhaps not.

pope_meat··on Census Bureau’s Survey Shows Significant Increase in Homeschooling Rates
I'm sure you don't, but we're mere mortals with biases and blind spots, one person's reasonable views are extreme to another. This is also anecdotal, but every nutcase I've ever met felt their views were reasonable and obvious. Maybe we're all nutcases, even.
pope_meat··on Repairing a Tesla for 5k when Tesla wanted 22k to replace a battery pack
Nope, Gap is also offered when you're financing the car, it's meant to cover the gap between the value of your car and the loan total, since the moment you drive off the lot you're upside down, so if you crash 5 minutes later and the insurance only wants to cover the "value of the car", gap would cover the remaining loan balance.
pope_meat··on Pining for a De-Googled Smartphone
In regards to the camera, I was very surprised when I recently learned that they haven't changed the actual camera hardware in their phones in many years, all the gains from one model to the next was in software magic. It ain't actually a 20mp sensor in there, it's much smaller, but through software wizardry it gets upscaled.
pope_meat··on The Privacy Lesson of 9/11: Mass Surveillance Is Not the Way Forward
Yup yup yup. During the civil rights movement people would do sit ins at businesses that segregated, blocking that businesses ability to make money. They marched in the streets, blocking traffic. Humans hate to change anything unless it becomes necessary, so to bring about meaningful change, you have to be a thorn in the side.
pope_meat··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)

pope_meat··on Adults with history of recreational cannabis use have altered speech production
Here's a good analysis by the CATO institute, and the conclusion is that legalization has not had much of an impact in either the positive or negative direction. Until there's good data to support the idea that cannabis legalization is creating harms it's probably best to remain neutral. Both pro and anti cannabis sides are going of "feels", rather than facts it seems.

pope_meat··on The Privacy Lesson of 9/11: Mass Surveillance Is Not the Way Forward
A protest that inconveniences no one is a protest that's easily ignored. You have to bring attention to the issue, otherwise everyone else will just go on with their day.

Civil disobedience is not a bad thing.
