poopchute··on Pi-Hole: Why You Need a Network-Wide Ad-Blocker
Or.. Advertisers will pay ISP's to inject ads.
poopchute··on Lean Testing or Why Unit Tests Are Worse Than You Think
Code robustness clearly has different priority levels though. A graphical error is much less serious than a part of your code that could nuke your server.
poopchute··on An Illustrated Proof of the CAP Theorem
The reverse proves something different. If you walk, you've proved that you CAN walk. Not walking is not a proof for lack of ability. It does however give a possible counter example to the assumption "If you can walk, you will walk"
poopchute··on A major physics experiment just detected a particle that shouldn't exist
I was just wondering what to listen to next, now that I finished the expanse series (until the next book at least). Thanks for the recommendation; I'll check it out
poopchute··on Yale physicists find signs of a time crystal
The latin way to say "my bad"
poopchute··on Apple is making a show based on Isaac Asimov’s ‘Foundation’ books
If memory serves there was a fight between the showrunners / writers and the network between season 2 and 3 of Battlestar Galactica, on top of the writers strike that happened around that time. Imo, it really dragged the quality of the show down.
poopchute··on The Imaginative Reality of Ursula K. Le Guin
"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" is very excellent and only a few pages long (under 10 if I recall correctly)
poopchute··on All disk galaxies rotate once every billion years: study
"If you accept the notion that all disc galaxies are oriented on exactly the same plane (which is current scientific consensus I believe)"

That is easily disprovable, no? We can see many many different angles of disc galaxies. A simple google search will show tons and tons.

poopchute··on Ask HN: One tab on Chrome takes about 100MB memory, why?
I sometimes run into the issue when I'm working on my addons for World of Warcraft. I'll frequently have 2 instances of the game open (~4gb of RAM each) + my editor + whatever else I havn't bothered to close and a ton of chrome tabs. Typcially those extra things are pdf documents, skype, qbittorrent and others I can't recall at the moment. I hit my cap of 16gb RAM pretty consistently.
poopchute··on Building an AlphaZero AI using Python and Keras
Is there magic incantation I have to say to get this to compile? Jupyter says I'm missing things when I try to run it (despite installing the things with pip)
poopchute··on Cortana is really bad
That calc example is the exact reason I uninstalled libre office. Google sheets is good enough for everything I need
poopchute··on Open-Source Iron Battery Project
I checked out his blog that is linked in the crowd fund page. Here is the 2 posts I found about the battery:

poopchute··on Iceland's attempts to replant its forests
That is a cool shot. I like how the trees are perfectly camouflaged and even the shape of their foliage matches the rolling hills
poopchute··on Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars
What ticks me off at my University is the $100 per semester athletic fee, but that doesn't include use of any athletic things. Still costs $85 per month to use the weight room

How did the sewage line breaking cause mud in your tap? black/white water lines should never be mixed.

For my second sink in my kitchen I have a 5 stage filter system. It goes through a UV light to kill living things, then a 3 charcoal filters, one for large particles, another for removing chlorine and the third for removing small particles. Then it does reverse osmosis before heading to the tap. As far as size, it takes up about 1m x 0.5m x 0.5m

poopchute··on The truth about toilet swirl (2015) [video]
"They should have repeated the experiment;"

From the video description:

"For the record Destin and I repeated the experiment 3-4 times each in each hemisphere and got the same results every time."

poopchute··on Andrew Ng is raising a $150M AI Fund
So it should rhyme with Hung and Sung?
poopchute··on Electric cars: The death of the internal combustion engine
I think about it the same way as owning a boat. If you go fishing every weekend then by all means buy a boat. If you only go once a year for a weekend then just rent a boat. Same principal can be used for longer than 650 km drives
poopchute··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?
Wolfram alpha has that functionality if you type in a place and a date. Example: "Vancouver BC, december 2, 2016"
poopchute··on Stargate Physics 101: A comedy about the importance of software testing
The show Stargate Universe is set on a alterran Galaxy seeding ship. The stargates in that show are definitely an earlier design than the milky way ones, demonstrated by their ability to only dial other gates within a few dozen light years instead of across the galaxy
poopchute··on New finding may explain heat loss in fusion reactors
I did derivatives and integrals in my highschool calc course, circa 2007
poopchute··on Feds nail webcam on utility pole for 10 weeks to spy on suspect
Re: passer by passes by

If someone walks past my house, no problem. If someone sets up a telescope at the end of my driveway to look in my living room, I'm calling the cops.

poopchute··on Apple’s declining software quality
iTunes and iCloud deleting all my data is what sent me to Android. Deleting data should be a cardinal sin and require some conscious effort to do.
poopchute··on The Fermi Paradox Is Not Fermi's, and It Is Not a Paradox
The mass number you through out (large portion of the mass of Neptune) seemed really off to me so I looked it up and found some comparisons.

For a flyby: Daedalus mass = 5.0 * 10^7 kg (500 kg of scientific equipment)

With a slowdown to stay in the system: Daedalus mass = 10^10 kg

Mass of Neptune: 10^26 kg

So even for an extended stay, the mass of the Daedalus is no where close to a significant portion of Neptune.

I looked for equivalent mass objects, here is a few:

1.4 * 10^18 = all oceans on earth combined

10^12 kg = 1.4km diameter asteroid (Icarus)

3.5 * 10^10 kg = 0.5 x 0.3 x 0.2 dimension asteroid (Itokawa)

Estimates put the number of asteroids larger than 1km diameter in the belt between mars and Jupiter at 750,000

These are just straight mass conversions, no idea about the real content of fuel. If all those asteroids were straight fuel then you could launch upwards of a million Daedalus class ships that stay in the orbit of their target star.

poopchute··on It’s Time to Open Up the GPU
Did you even read the post? The whole thing talks about how this is AMD's new version of mantle which is specifically for gcn cards. It even says who its written by at the bottom, the senior manager of engineering at AMD.
poopchute··on What you wanted to know about AI
A name I've heard for this non general type of AI is RI (restricted intelligence).
poopchute··on EA Shuts Down ‘SimCity’ and ‘The Sims’ Developer Maxis
I quite like sim building games. My most recent favourite is Banished http://www.shiningrocksoftware.com/game/ Not nearly as complex as sim city but still very enjoyable

poopchute··on What are your favorite sci-fi and fantasy books?
- Brave New World (dystopia/utopia, short read)

- Pandora's Star (futuristic (2380), humans are immortal through rejuvenation and are colonizing new worlds using worm hole tech(I think they have 50 or so worlds), long read - lots of sequels if you enjoy the universe)

- Ender's game (futuristic, the movie cuts off 1/2 the book that revolves around Ender's 2 siblings, both also are geniuses, short read - lots of sequels if you enjoy the universe)

My monitor also makes a high pitched noise. Sony KDL-32EX400 (using HDMI connection). Neither of my other monitors produce the noise (VGA, & Displayport connections if it matters)
