poopcat··on CEO of Mistral: AI is software. It can be controlled
Wish I could read but it's behind a paywall. Nice to see one person who doesn't think we're all doomed though
poopcat··on Micromouse

poopcat··on An abundance of Katherines: The game theory of baby naming
Not going to lie the first thing I thought was, "Why is the John Green book on HN??" I mean, cool, but surprising. Then I read the end and it made more sense ha
poopcat··on Eton bans smartphone for new pupils
Honestly this seems like a good experiment. I am always looking at my phone, but I’m at a very different stage in life than the students at school. With a Nokia phone, it’s not like they wouldn’t be able to communicate with one another or with their parents.

I do worry that it might make it harder for students that struggle finding a group of peers at school and find community online.

poopcat··on Hard drive, SSD puncher of physical media with 12 tons of pressure
As someone who hoards my own old USBs and hard drives, which I don’t think hold anything particularly interesting, this idea was violent at first. But yeah, I get it lol
poopcat··on Google's greenhouse gas emissions jump 48% in five years
Interesting considering that Google said it had a strategy that would ensure AI consumed less power. It was based on the 4Ms: model, machine, mechanization, and mapping.

poopcat··on Ladybird Web Browser becomes a non-profit with $1M from GitHub Founder

poopcat··on Algorithmic fitting of Japanese candy
I loved how you used your skills to address a ~seemingly~ simple problem. The explanation was also cool
poopcat··on Show HN: I made a puzzle game that gently introduces my favorite math mysteries

poopcat··on Show HN: I made a simple hue/gradient game
This is awesome! I just played for a while. This may be a dumb question but... how do you win? Please forgive my frazzled brain if I missed the instructions somewhere.
poopcat··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
Lol yes exactly! XD I used to pay Adobe to be able to do that. What a scam
poopcat··on Cyber Scarecrow

poopcat··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
I am just glad that I finally learned that I do not, in fact, have to pay for Adobe Acrobat to be able to edit a PDF and can do it for free in Preview on Mac.
poopcat··on Developer Takes 'Retro' Concept to New Level by Creating Physical Winamp Player
It does kind of look like a sticker now that you mention it. I went over to look at the video of the device itself and it seems like it was just the angle of the photo.

poopcat··on Anyone else remember using the, "Internet Yellow Pages"?
Wow! I had no idea this existed! My family grew up without computers because we had low income. Anyone know what the books were look? Would love to learn more.
poopcat··on Big Tech Is Realizing Something: Their AI Can't Keep Messing Up on This Scale
Good point! I think part of the tension comes from the fact that there's this idea that AI is superior or will be superior to people. If this is the case, it doesn't make sense for it to make so many mistakes. In a way, you could say that the mistakes mess up our preconceived notion of what AI is supposed to be.

Ditto on the car thing, tho. Much scarier that weird AI photos with too many fingers

poopcat··on The Apple Watch will let you rest
"[A] fitness tracker’s ultimate goal is to help you improve your health. Feeling like you can’t rest because of an arbitrary streak is the opposite of improving your health."

Now if I could only stop my Watch from bullying me when I don't move as much as it wants me to (and when) lol

poopcat··on Fungus breaks down ocean plastic
Considering how plastic manufacturers turned recycling into the ultimate false hope, I agree with you. I try to be mindful about my plastic consumption but it is everywhere.
