poooogles··on Ships fitted with ‘cheat devices’ to divert poisonous pollution into sea
This is a big forgotten one. The sound of container ships as they go past on shipping lanes is colossal; if you're downwind you can hear them from 3/4 miles away quite well.
poooogles··on Facebook, WhatsApp Will Have to Share Messages With U.K.?
>It's a shell of a functional service.

I can't say this in any less of a politically charged way but 10 years of austerity will do that.

poooogles··on Facebook, WhatsApp Will Have to Share Messages With U.K.?
>In London alone, it is not possible to pay for public transport with cash and a card is required. Their reasons for doing this because it "benefits criminals" is echoing the "ban encryption" nonsense.

Not strictly true. You can buy an oyster card with cash, you can load it with cash and use that. After a weeks worth of journeys you can return it and get your £5 deposit back and buy another one.

Not exactly perfect but it's essentially the same as having a burner phone.

>NVIDIA Shield TV because it has a perfect Plex client

Pending you don't want to watch something in Dolby Vision.

I can either have Dolby Atmos come from the shield and a HDR video, or Dolby Vision through the TV and compressed AC3 audio of some kind from the TV.

Asking for both is apparently too much...

poooogles··on Windows 11 could run on Linux
>Major distros are shipping with a better desktop experience than Windows right now, and it has been like that for a while.

Can you provide some examples here? I'm running Kubuntu and it's OK but not Windows level of slick.

Problems I'm having are display scaling and multi monitor support for different display resolutions, shitty wifi drivers and networking needing a restart whenever coming out of sleep.

The only OS that's doing what you're claiming at the moment is ChromeOS just because everything is so wonderfully integrated and _just works_. Even if that comes with handing your life over to Google...

poooogles··on Day Trading for a Living?
>I have a couple friends that do day trading on "technical analysis".

As someone that trades on fundamentals I like to think of that as reading tea leaves. Literally non sensical. Oh yeah sure that pattern is the upside down elephant so we should go short...

No smoke without fire though so I assume some are making money with it. Just doesn't seem like a sound idea to me.

Longitude in itself doesn't dictate weather. Labrador is the same longitude as London but we don't have similar climates.

Köppen climate classification is probably the best indicator of where else is similar; which comes out as the same as most of northern Europe [1].

poooogles··on Python Is Eating the World
>Oh nice, you have two frameworks. Well, whatever suits your fixed mindset.

Let me see, you've got Django, DRF, Flask, Flask-Restful, Flask-Restplus, Flask-API, sanic, pyramid, Cornice, hug, falcon, eve, bottle, tornado, aiohttp, vibora, weppy, starlette...

Those are just some that I've picked out of my head.

poooogles··on Major power failure affects homes and transport
>The UK grid is actually pretty well maintained and resilient

Also prefixed by not an expert here; but know a few in the industry and somewhat keep up with it.

The push away from coal to other sources of power (combined with the closure of gigawatts of nuclear power) has put the network under more stress than it's been in the past few decades [1]. I'd expect more of this in the future in cases of multi generator failures; there just isn't that much in the way of generation to take up the slack.

Luckily we're in summer where demand is much lower, if this was to happen in winter the outcomes could have been much worse.

//edit - Just to be clear though, this does seem to be totally benign and could have happened to any other well equipped grid. A gigawatt of power dropping out in such a short space is going to result in some kind of load shedding. Denorwig spins up fast; but not that fast.

poooogles··on Principles of Chaos Engineering (2018)
Sure, often at a super initial stage the people running the test can just do this manually though. Don't be put off by having to set up the whole suite, a lot of the value from Chaos Engineering can be achieved from randomly removing bits of infrastructure manually (a d6 and a lookup table works fine). The value comes from the learnings as a result of infrastructure being terminated.

You are not the market that these are targeted at then. The normal person cannot do those things.

poooogles··on Best practices for migrating an Oracle database to Amazon PostgreSQL
>Aurora is an open source database. They just it picked up and made it closed source on Amazon.

This isn't remotely true at all. As far as I'm aware most of the work inside of aurora is in the storage side which is a complete rewrite with a new architecture as per here [1].

>Who develops Aurora? That would be Oracle. It’s called MySQL.

Christ.

Make it yourself at home. Triple cook the chips and they'll be far from bland. Make your own tartar sauce. Beer batter some fish you've bought yourself.

What? No it's not understandable. It's wage fixing and is totally immoral; it works against everything a free market is supposed to be. You might as well move to the communist model and have everyone paid $xxx (hyperbole but the point isn't that far off it).

poooogles··on Modifications to Google Chromium for removing Google integration
>In fact I generally assume that ads have to be clicked on to make money.

Not at all. Most of the industry moved away from CPC a while ago due to how dodgy it skews data. Most clicks end up being bots on shady websites Vs actual people. Viewabilty is what the good agencies are advertising against now; with the hope that you'll navigate to the advertiser's site down the line.

poooogles··on EU copyright reform: the facts
>More broadly it facilitates discrimination.

This is also true, I certainly think if you're a white middle class person taking a knife to a friends you're going to get off easier than an someone from a ethnic minority in Tower Hamlets.

It also results in insane things like this [1]. I'm not sure if there's a better way though, it seems much like democracy it's the best of a bad bunch.
