poochkoishi728··on Can I disable all data collection from my vehicle?
The first link leads malicious ads/malware. On iphone says viruses detected pretending to be apple/google
poochkoishi728··on Canadian math prodigy allegedly stole $65M in crypto
Doesn't seem worth it. Live as a fugitive, with your face publicly known, so you always have to watch your back from criminals who'd jump at the chance to extort you once they found out who you are.
poochkoishi728··on Canadian math prodigy allegedly stole $65M in crypto
That seems hard to implement. Presumably the move was all based on regular transactions. You can't just say, "If we're losing money, stop it", you have to concretely specify the conditions.
poochkoishi728··on Canadian math prodigy allegedly stole $65M in crypto
He can believe the tokens are rightfully his, and still believe that authorities don't see it his way. Like if you're in Salem and know you're not a witch, you'd want to take off too and chill in no-extradition treaty countries, so you don't get boiled alive by people with different outlooks.

I like the analogy of an unsecured window. It doesn't seem to apply to a hypothetical (idk specifics of this company) purely private company in some crypto-friendly country that doesn't have any ties to the rule of law.

poochkoishi728··on Nixie Tubes (2015)
Iconic time clock used in the time-travel anime 'Steins;Gate'.

Wikipedia says it is "considered one of the best anime series of all time by critics and fans alike.". [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steins;Gate_(TV_series)]

poochkoishi728··on Chegg is on its last legs after ChatGPT sent its stock down
Lmao thought of this when Trump won
poochkoishi728··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
Astonishingly to me at the time, the app never had a History function (as in Photoshop, list of history you could click through). I had been waiting 3+ years for it to materialize, in order to purchase it. Have since moved on to vector editors and don't see a need to go back.

*Actually now that I think about it, I don't seem to miss the lack of History in vector editors (and just use undo).

poochkoishi728··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
For the site on desktop Firefox, it seems you are very proud of the slider-frame, but we probably don't need to know the UI component identity :)
poochkoishi728··on In the US, regenerative farming practices require unlearning past advice
A 6mb mp3 downloads automatically when visited, on desktop at least, which seems pretty wasteful.
poochkoishi728··on Dropbox keeps threatening to delete my files
I'm willing to bet they make $100K+ every round they send these out. Everyone has to consider at least what to do with the email (ignore? accept if it's useful again? maybe just to stop getting bugged)
poochkoishi728··on Notes on OpenAI's new o1 chain-of-thought models
Seems not to work as division yields -1 (-1/1/1) and adding them yields +1 (-1+1+1).
poochkoishi728··on Reports of the death of dental cavities are greatly exaggerated
We want clean, healthy and attractive teeth and mouths to stare at. Rather than the e.g. inter-dental mouth that triggers disgust even if realistic. Use the attractive models in the video if they have healthy teeth ideally.
poochkoishi728··on Notes on OpenAI's new o1 chain-of-thought models
{0, -1, 1}. Divide (in order): 0/-1 -> 0/1 -> 0. Add: 0 - 1 + 1 = 0
poochkoishi728··on Show HN: I built an indie, browser-based MMORPG
How long did it take you to make this? Looks cool, watched someone fight a chicken before the server update.
poochkoishi728··on Humans began to rapidly accumulate technological knowledge 600k years ago
Influence != Determine
poochkoishi728··on Show HN: Shortbread App – AI-powered, romantic comics for women
Haha the new guy halfway through looks exactly like a white version of Regé-Jean Page (Simon Basset) from Bridgerton
poochkoishi728··on Pigeon towers: The rise and fall of a 17th-century status symbol (2015)
Wouldn't the pigeons avoid the tower after noticing that humans came by periodically to catch them? It seems weird that they'd voluntarily live in such a dangerous home.
poochkoishi728··on X is justifiably slow (2022)
> As should be obvious from the framing, X here is a variable

Not only did I misunderstand the article, the author tops it off by calling me a dummy at the end..

poochkoishi728··on X is justifiably slow (2022)
Is X not X11? I read the article thinking it was that.
poochkoishi728··on Helldivers 2 has caused over 20k Steam accounts to be banned
No, they worded it like that to avoid saying something like 'due to the weak-a** currency'.
poochkoishi728··on De-googling, so far
Does anyone know how private ProtonMail is? I heard admittedly crackpot-sounding rumors that it was some sort of NSA honeypot, but verifying them seems like proving the existence of a divine being.
poochkoishi728··on "My Bike Is Everything to Me"
Obesity comes from being lazy and eating lots, the impact of bikes on obesity would be equivalent to the rolling friction of a fat person rolling down a hill
poochkoishi728··on Swift sucks at web serving or does it?
Is there a mistake in the Swift graph of 'Success rate (Y) over concurrent requests (X)'? It shows a near-constant 1.0 success rate, but the description says "[Swift] had higher throughput than PHP yet requests started failing much sooner as load increased".

EDIT: Nm, it must be referring to the slight dip that starts early in the Swift graph.

poochkoishi728··on Personal AGI – Pushing GPT-4-turbo beyond all limits
Lmao while this reads as snark to the max, the user's past comments suggest that this could be some form of naive sincerity.
poochkoishi728··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
How do you know they weren't broken items anyway?
poochkoishi728··on The history of 'OK' (2023)
In this instance, this is such an elegant, concise and multilayered response.

Simultaneously:

- "Let's be done with this statement."

- "What's the interesting point here?"

- "We chose a civil approach here, going with indifference to these string of words"

- "Look how great the word 'OK' is. Two letters to express all this."

poochkoishi728··on Google, Meta 'break' Apple's device fingerprinting rules
Devil's advocate: People using Android accept (for whatever reason) a less fluid, subpar UI and UX, while iPhone users are less likely to tolerate it (by nature of not using Android). Thus, using an iPhone could actually suggest a more sophisticated sense of taste i.e. being cooler.
poochkoishi728··on Insects and other animals have consciousness
Dogs and cats seem much closer to what we experience as consciousness than they are further away. And pigs and cows are likely as conscious as dogs and cats. I'd imagine insects also have a subjective experience with some similarity to other animals, based on how they writhe in pain and seem to hate it just as much as we'd hate it.
poochkoishi728··on Liu Cixin's War of the Worlds (2019)
This needs a spoiler alert. The article unexpectedly gives away how humanity deals with the aliens in the second paragraph, revealing details you wouldn't know yet having only watched the Netflix show. Unfortunately I guess I took one for the team..
poochkoishi728··on Keeping your data from Apple is harder than expected
Always wanted the option to disable network access for an app. The lack of this made me suspect that Apple had too much to lose (in harvesting data) to allow this.
