poikroequ··on Against all odds, an asteroid mining company appears to be making headway
The title is far too generous. They've only launched a single spacecraft so far which failed due to communications issues. They're planning to launch a second spacecraft in Q4 this year which will fly by an asteroid and take pictures. They're planning a third spacecraft which they say will dock to an asteroid using magnets because it's "likely iron rich" and basically take measurements.

Nothing about actually mining resources and returning those materials to Earth. So they've gotten funding from investors? In the past, even dumber endeavours have gotten even more funding than this, it really doesn't mean anything.

poikroequ··on Scientists Build a Simple Gel 'Brain' That Learns How to Play Pong Better
So it can hallucinate some bullshit? No thanks.
poikroequ··on JavaScript dates are about to be fixed
I get the same impression. Not identical but the whole temporal API seems heavily influenced by Java.

Having worked with dates and times in both Java and JavaScript, I'm very happy with what I see in the temporal API. Huge improvement.

poikroequ··on Scientists Build a Simple Gel 'Brain' That Learns How to Play Pong Better
There's one aspect I don't understand of how the gel "learns" . What are the factors for positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement? How does the gel "know" what is a good result and what is a bad result?
poikroequ··on Ask HN: Imagine a world with 1Tb/s internet. What would change?
A high quality 4k stream is about 20mbit/sec. 16k resolution would only have 16x the amount of pixels. Assuming bitrates scale proportionally to resolution, that would only be 320mbit/sec.

So if you want to max out a 1tbit connection, you would need something closer to 900k resolution.

poikroequ··on Ask HN: Imagine a world with 1Tb/s internet. What would change?
If corporations got their way, nothing would run locally anymore. Everything would run in the cloud and our devices would be nothing more than thin clients.
poikroequ··on OpenSSH Backdoors
It's not a complete fallacy. In events like this, after the news hits, there are a flurry of eyeballs looking, at least for a little while. The heartbleed bug got people to look at the openssl code and realize what a mess that code is. Inspectre and meltdown has led to the discovery of many more CPU vulnerabilities. After Chatgpt hit the market, there has been lots of new research on AI security, such as into prompt injection attacks.
poikroequ··on Windows Control Panel set for deprecation
Soooooooo are they finally going to add all the missing configurations in the settings app? Because there's still *a lot* you can only configure from control panel.

poikroequ··on What Are 'Mini-Retirements,' and Who Takes Them?
I wish we could all live like this, but realistically out of reach for most people who live paycheck to paycheck. It would be great for the economy, more people out vacationing, spending money, would create more jobs.
poikroequ··on Basic Mechanisms In Fire Control Computers (1953) [video]
Great video! I love the simple straightforward presentation, it explains the concepts so well. The many applications of cams continue to impresses me.

The fundamentals of mechanical computers go back much further, well into the 1800s and possibly even earlier. Much of it has its roots in clockwork.

poikroequ··on TV set has become a digital billboard. And it's only getting worse
That's increasingly no longer true. For many new smart TVs, you literally can't use them until you connect them to the internet.
poikroequ··on Netboot.xyz: your favorite operating systems in one place
Not quite the same. It sounds like netboot downloads the images from over the Internet. Whereas Ventoy you preload the images onto a flash drive ahead of time.
poikroequ··on A Starter's guide on recovering damaged and rotten CDs
I have hard drives which are 15 years old that still work just fine. Yeah, hard drives do fail, that's why you use RAID5 or RAID6.

8TB HDDs can be had for around $100 each. Four of these in RAID5 gives you 24TB. That's enough to backup 5000 DVDs (single layer) or 2800 dual layer DVDs.

poikroequ··on A Starter's guide on recovering damaged and rotten CDs
Are hard drives such a terrible solution? Setup a RAID5 or RAID6 array and you could easily backup thousands of DVDs for less than $1000.
poikroequ··on The brain simulates actions and their consequences during REM sleep
I've had so many dreams where it seemed like my brain was simulating some unusual social situation so that I would know how to behave and react in such a situation in real life. Especially situations that may cause stress or anxiety.
poikroequ··on Online dating apps struggle as people swear off swiping
It's a very hard market to get into these days when you don't already have millions of users. The problem is, if someone signs up for your app and there are only a few other people using the app in the same area, it's not very useful and they'll quickly uninstall it. So how do you launch a new dating app that already has millions of users? You need to have an existing app/service which already has millions of users that can segue into a dating app. Such as when Facebook launched their dating feature...

poikroequ··on Intel sells stake in chip designer Arm Holdings
Are there any US fabricators of ARM chips? Any fabricators in any Western nation? If not, Intel could have tapped into the markets for defense and national security.

poikroequ··on CSVs Are Kinda Bad. DSVs Are Kinda Good
If you're not concerned with the size of the file, you might consider just using NDJSON.

poikroequ··on All of Earth's water in a single sphere (2019)
Not completely accurate, it depends on your definition of smoothness. The Earth scaled down to the size of a billiard ball would have a texture more like sandpaper, certainly not what most people would consider smooth.
poikroequ··on Study shows that tacking the “AI” label on products may drive people away
AI isn't being marketed to consumers. AI is being marketed to investors. Regardless of whether or not it boosts sales, so long as it keeps driving up the stock price, they'll keep tossing around the word AI.
poikroequ··on A high energy hadron collider on the Moon
These things are fun to fantasize about, but realistically considering the astronomical cost it would be to ship all the necessary materials to the moon and to do the construction, it's little more than just that, fantasy. Considering there are two Boeing Starliner astronauts who may be stuck on the space station for several more months, the thoughts of building such things on the moon just isn't realistic in the foreseeable future. It's going to require exponential advances in space travel before we can even begin to seriously consider such projects.
poikroequ··on Someone's been messing with Python's floating point subnormals
I've had to clean up after npm packages as well. Git hooks I didn't ask for. Shell modifications I didn't ask for. I hope that, one day, these package managers will utilize sandboxing/containerization to avoid messes like this.
poikroequ··on .INTERNAL is now reserved for private-use applications
Things like this are rarely simple or obvious. I don't know what potential gotchas there could have been, but I'm sure there were strange and unusual things they had to carefully consider before making this an official standard.
poikroequ··on TR1X: Open-source re-implementation of Tomb Raider 1
All I can say is, I wish I was passionate and motivated enough to work on projects like this. It doesn't have to be pragmatic in any way, you do it because you want to. No different than someone who may spend their free time working on old cars.
poikroequ··on The Third Atomic Bomb
The Japanese were ruthless and barbaric during WW2. Too few people know the full extent of the atrocities committed by Japan during that time.
