pohl··on The rabbit hole of unsafe Rust bugs
The 3rd paragraph has 3 bullet points about it.
pohl··on Swift was always going to be part of the OS (2022)
Did he ever use it much? It’s not self-hosting yet, so he’d be more a user of C++ than he was of Swift.
pohl··on Andre Braugher: Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Captain Raymond Holt Dies Aged 61
By George I think you’ve got it.
pohl··on Chesterton's Fence: A lesson in second order thinking (2021)
Wait, are you saying that if Alice learns of an edge case by having it pointed out to them by Bob then Alice is a priori unqualified to analyze whether the edge case is important?
pohl··on Moderna Melanoma Vaccine Cuts Death Rate in Half
The concept you want to understand is metastasis. When a cancer metastasizes, it sends out cells that become cancers elsewhere in your body. One day just just have a little melanoma, the next day it sounds out cells that become cancers in other organs: your lungs, your liver, etc.

Some skin cancers, like basal cell carcinoma, never metastasize. Melanoma is one that will.

pohl··on Sci-Fi Interfaces: Hackers
That was my interpretation, too, but this article shows me The Plauge skateboarding through physical towers, etc. Not sure such scenes can be written off as happening in Joey’s mind.
pohl··on Andre Braugher: Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Captain Raymond Holt Dies Aged 61
I wouldn’t think it’s worth elevating the phrase “cultural artifact” just to put it out of reach for TV shows, but whatever.
pohl··on Andre Braugher: Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Captain Raymond Holt Dies Aged 61
Part of an observer’s perception of a cultural artifact comes from the observer’s knowledge and experiences, which can include knowledge about the people who made the artifact. It can change over time as the observer changes. Learning of a performer’s death can be such a change.
pohl··on Could we stop Yellowstone from erupting with a geothermal power plant?

pohl··on Conway's Game of Life is omniperiodic
Of all the natural numbers in N, how did it turn out that the last two were so small: 41 and 19? I’d have guessed that maybe some huge number would have been the most difficult.
pohl··on Good old fashion ML is dying
Long live meta language
pohl··on Scientists succeed in growing dolomite in the lab
Like Professor Farnsworth, my first thought was also Rudy Ray Moore.
pohl··on Rockwell Retro Encabulator [video]
See also Leslie's iconic piping speech from the brief but excellent series Patriot:

pohl··on They're Made Out of Meat (1991)
Heck, all of The Cyberiad has this dismissal of meat done better.
pohl··on Find out what happened to Dilbert
Not surprised to see proud, unironic use of X.com from Adams.
pohl··on GitHub Renamed Me (2014)
But was he using it as a social hub?
pohl··on Comparing humans, GPT-4, and GPT-4V on abstraction and reasoning tasks
That has always been my impression, despite the myriad ways that LLMs impress.

So much potential is lost just in the request/response limitation. While I’m waiting for a response from GPT-4, I’m continuing to think. Imagine if the reverse were true. AGI needs to be able to mull things over for spans of time.

pohl··on IBM pauses advertising on X after ads show up next to antisemitic content
That just makes it all the more embarrassing for any advertisers who remain. They'll have been beaten in the race to distance their brands from such content by IB fucking M.
pohl··on IBM pauses advertising on X after ads show up next to antisemitic content
But also not at all surprising considering the platform’s trajectory and Elon’s personal amplification choices over the last year.
pohl··on IBM suspends ads on X after they appeared next to Nazi posts
Elon alone is responsible for the garbage he chooses to amplify. Media Matters, whatever faults they may have, is merely taking note of what he amplifies.
pohl··on 'Energy independent' Uruguay runs on 100% renewables for four straight months
There’s probably not a simple yes/no answer, but rather a function of the rates of both planting and harvesting trees, unless one is pedantic about the distinction between able-to-be renewed and actually renewed, which is useless in the context of our climate issues.
pohl··on IBM suspends ads on X after they appeared next to Nazi posts
Remaining advertisers suffer the shame of being beaten at distancing one’s brand from Nazis by fucking IBM.
pohl··on I accidentally a scheme
I’ll stand as witness to the fact that ordinary people playfully tortured the language towards humorously cute long, long before one TRS-80 could call another over the phone. The tech just helped these people find and feed off of each other.
pohl··on I accidentally a scheme
It’s a pretty common thing all over the internet to deliberately butcher the language for humorous effect. The LOLcat (“I can has cheeseburger “) translation of the Bible is hilarious.
pohl··on Gut epithelial barrier damage caused by dishwasher detergents and rinse aids
Also personal, but not every member of the family thinks about how water behaves — like how it pools — while loading the machine.
pohl··on Photos of Roger Penrose’s journal
What's making you expect a mystery?
pohl··on Sunday Malaise (2015)
Laying around in bed listening to Brahms doesn't sound like a half bad way to spend a Sunday. I might try that this week.
pohl··on Ask HN: Why is HN replacing Twitter URLs with canonical URLs requiring login
Agreed, and a net good at that.
pohl··on Rust – Faster compilation with the parallel front-end in nightly
beautiful summary
pohl··on No Man's Sky just keeps getting better
I first played it after it became available for M series Macs, so I skipped all the drama from the early days. I found it to be a great game.
