pogue··on I switched to Brave
It's really a shame Opera didn't open source the Presto engine.
pogue··on God's Eye UAP – documented UFO cases on a 3D globe, with the evidence
I think this got posted here the other day and is a study with an interesting premise, which is to look at historical bluebook reports and see if there are correlation to known nuclear tests going on at or around the same time and I believe other astrological events (bright stars or etc - I forget exactly).

But, that could be other possibly freely available data sets you could add to your project, such as if there's known planets in high visibility, geothermal storms, SpaceX launches, satellite falls, maybe flight radar data if that freely exists, and so on.

Anyway very interesting! You might see what the ufo/uap community on reddit thinks about it.

pogue··on Play GTA Vice City in the Browser
It's Vice City, not GTA3.
pogue··on Afterglow: Run classic After Dark screen savers on modern macOS
That would be great, of course. I have found a ready made Flying Toaster screensaver floating around and used that. But, I figured if someone had done it for Mac, surely there'd be a Windows version out there.
pogue··on Afterglow: Run classic After Dark screen savers on modern macOS
I appreciate the link, but as far as using it aa a screen saver, that's not what I'm looking for.

I would think if this mac After Dark project is open source, the assets would be available to use in other software.

pogue··on Afterglow: Run classic After Dark screen savers on modern macOS
I need this for Windows.

The After Dark screensavers are on the internet archive, but obviously they look and run like crap since they're made for Windows 3.x to maybe 95/98.

Cool story bro.
pogue··on A Decongestant Debate That Won't Clear Up
There should be a class action lawsuit against the manufacturers of this stuff that have been defrauding us by claiming it works since ephedrine and pseudoephedrine was banned in 2005. They include it in countless formulas, like daytime cold and flu and so on and so forth.

Phenylephrine does, however, work when sprayed directly in the nasal passages, but like it's counterpart, Afrin (oxymetazoline hcl), it's addictive and only works for 4 hours.

pogue··on Mistral OCR 4.1
If you're getting inaccurate results from OCR what's the purpose of even doing it? Inaccuracy of text of any kind seems like a completely obvious failure of the entire purpose of scanning text into a computer.

Only $30, but with tariffs and shipping I assume it adds up.

pogue··on I stopped trusting USB-C cable labels and started testing them
Is there a cheap, reliable tester that someone can recommend that will test multiple USB cable types (A, micro & C)?
pogue··on GrapheneOS duress PIN could land a man in prison
If he hadn't given the authorities the duress pin, and presumably they had seized it, would the encryption/protection GrapheneOS provides have been enough to keep them from accessing it's contents? I've never used Graphene so I'm unfamiliar with all it's features.

My Samsung phone has a feature to automatically format the device if the wrong code is entered X number of times, and I have security software that would let me wipe it remotely (if it still had internet access) so this whole situation brings up a lot of questions about features like this.

EDIT More discussion about it here, but it's quite technical. I was a bit confused about the rate limiting stuff and etc.

Thanks for this. This has to be one of the worst websites I've ever tried to use. I couldn't even scroll the page in half the mobile browsers I tried, despite turning off adblocking & etc. Absolutely abhorrent layout.
pogue··on Microsoft – Open Weights and American AI Leadership
Ok, great, so Microsoft believes in open weight models. So... uhh, why not release a few?
