pmkary··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
You dear are the most positive person I have seen in quite some time. With Earth burning in the fire of neofeudalism and unbreathable due to the smell of enshitification of everything, with people who---as a result of shit like Instagram---can no longer hold their attention enough to watch a god damn film, let alone a book; it takes quite some effort to filter the "noise" and only see the good people of corporate planting flowers and rainbows in our world.
pmkary··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
I’m afraid this dear leader was the last soul on this green Earth to get the memo; by then, it had been translated into Latin, carved into a monument, and forgotten by two civilizations.
pmkary··on FTL: A new operating system for clouds
What a nice thing!
pmkary··on An Update on Orion for Linux and Windows
If orion was open source and had a beautiful UI like Arc it could be the best browser for me. But it is not beautiful and I can't fix its bugs.
pmkary··on Sites in ChatGPT
Sadly while the example: https://below-the-surface-ocean.openai.chatgpt.site can be detected as SLOP on the first contact of photon with the retina, I honestly cannot detect https://frame-studio-motion.openai.chatgpt.site and it is giving me depression. The website is basic, but it doesn't feel slop. And I guess that is something.

I'm genuinely sad that what we learned with hard work and sweat, our craft, our identity, our soul; is now something you can buy. I've been in this profession for a long time and now I see people who have absolutely no fucking clue, but lots of money, and they buy all these agents and make things that work (way more broken, with absolutely shit quality), but they work and so they brag about their creations to me all day long, and man that makes me feel like a total loser.

I spent decades trying to master media theory, language design, computer graphics, compiler design, rewriting systems, mathematics, logic, build systems, graphs, data-flow systems, making GUI kits, layout systems, ... all to make a better system for thinking, and now the whole idea of thinking is outsourced (as altman says "sold as utility by the meter"). I need to become an addict or something and be wasted. This is not a life.

pmkary··on macOS 27 is so buggy
Somehow it fixed all my problems.
pmkary··on LinkedIn Larpmaxxing
Best thing I read in a long long time.
pmkary··on America.gov
Remember WALL•E? Remember how "BUY N LARGE" used to bethe government of the U.S. and their CEO was somehow the president? The American government's demo (sorry, the mass population branch of Trump businesses' demo) and keynote showing the new stuff somehow completely was the transition. Congratulations to everyone. --- And on the other hand, the website seems a lot great. Design is right, works nicely, and the privacy claim is the funniest joke ever.
pmkary··on Tells of a Slop UI
The most stupid thing about Slop AI is Heading + Description. Whenever I generate something with these things, they add a useless obvious header and a paragraph of crap beneath. I tell them I'm generating an specific tool for me and me only; and it explains what it is, I tell them I don't want them and they include these things anyway...
pmkary··on Scientists build most accurate atomic clock
I mean you think to yourself "one second of error per million years must be quite enough overkill" and then these beautiful people come to show you wrong. I'm not sure who will ever see the difference but really what a job well done!
pmkary··on Minimal Phone 2
I don't know if you see it or not; but they started with really really minimal and dumb looks, and in this version started to add colors, UI elements and... So I guess a few versions in, and they'll build a iOS/Android from the first principles...
pmkary··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
This was just great... It was so real I couldn't really distinguish the scenes with animate scenes that were clearly CGI from reality.
pmkary··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
A very good one minute summary of exactly what is about to happen: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Whrat_Rn0I
pmkary··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Yes but I'm sure there was oil under the school and it was all for the best. After all "it’s more fun doing it this way."
pmkary··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Yes because normal people have tomahawks they can shoot to schools in their basements, and it required a court to find out who was responsible: United States, Dr. Evil, or the Cookie Monster?
pmkary··on Show HN: Capsule – Single-file web apps that save their data into SQLite
Really really nice
pmkary··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Why not series 8 apple why not?
pmkary··on Apple *deletes* your Apple Music library if you unsubscribe
That is strange and makes me afraid of using their service.
pmkary··on Performance of WebAssembly Runtimes in 2026
What they had done was wiring kernel level operations, without any of the userspace security checks into the wasmer. Their logic was that given the sandbox of wasmer; what would happen if you removed the sandbox of the OS? And I remember their article was featured in HN for two days or so as well. It was interesting. It wasn't that WASM ran faster than C, it was the API calls. And I keep wondering about an architecture where you have a highly sandboxed universal assembly with some API hardening; a middle ground, and so imagine an app that ran everywhere and was 10~100 times faster. Could be really cool.
pmkary··on Apple *deletes* your Apple Music library if you unsubscribe
This is not true. They remove the downloaded and encrypted files (sure) but your library remains in your iCloud. And I have unsubscribed many times and came back, it gets your account synced with iCloud and everything comes back.
pmkary··on Performance of WebAssembly Runtimes in 2026
Many moons ago I was preparing for an interview to join wasmer, back then they showed me that by running wasmer as a kernel extension in Linux they have made it run four orders of magnitude (10,000 times) faster. Given the WASI, I keep thinking more than the plugin usability of things like wasmer, what is the point of WASM not being accepted as a second binary in all operating systems? Windows could support .exe as well as .wasm for example and we would finally have a cross-plaform binary. Apple would never accept; Microsoft will do, and Linux can simply have,
pmkary··on Google stole open source code without crediting the authors (Artemis/Minitap)
When you say "don't be evil"; just where is your threshold Google?
pmkary··on Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again?
What a truly beautiful simplex/meta-balls pattern in the website. The two layers of blue and one red within the blue is such a beautiful design. I spent so much time looking at it that I forgot to read the article.
pmkary··on US refuses payout for soldiers who died in Iran 'because it isn't a war'
Given how many times Trump declared the war a victory, I'm also curious to know if they declare it a war, how many time the families will be compensated? ten wars? a hundred wars? two wars and a a hundred rounds of ceasefire friendly matches?
pmkary··on Adult Film Producer Unmasks Prolific 'John DOE' Torrent Pirate as Meta Executive
Remember that tech used to be great people making things? And just look how good we progressed, speculating about porn use...
pmkary··on Fine, I'll build my own text editor
Yeah maybe, but I still think even a little terminal editor is very beautiful.

On CRDT, or Atomic Editing, If you're interesting reading the blogs of Zed, VS Code, and the archives of Atom are very interesting.

pmkary··on Project Xanadu: Even More Hindsight (2025)
What an interesting thing to say, and what a good working environment you had!
pmkary··on How to get a free .arpa domain
Thanks for saying this.
pmkary··on Project Xanadu: Even More Hindsight (2025)
This was an amazing read. I try to make hyper-documents as Nelson wanted and I have seen much of the contradictions. Yet I still believe you have to give people a hundred ideas for them to use 10. He did just that.
pmkary··on Audacity 4.0
I'm so happy to see it be released. I had watched their YouTube coverage of what and why they were doing what they were doing and I'm so happy. As much as Audacity bears a nostalgia and mental safe zone in its look and design, it was too good of a software to let rot in technical debt and code spaghetti and getting behind. The world really needed an open source good looking easy to use workstation that is not as complicated as Pro Tools or Logic... I'm so thankful for Muse rescuing so many of the great apps (I really really am thankful for the MuseScore getting that amazing recently for example, or bringing the wonderful wonderful engine of StaffPad to it...)
