pmkary··on The program is the database is the interface
The moment I saw the title I knew it has something to do with EVE. Those people were revolutionary and it is a shame EVE never made it, what a glorious masterpiece of an article.
pmkary··on TypeScript types can run DOOM [video]
I had once built a type checker for a query language within the TypeScript type system, I thought I have reached the limits. Actually showed it to the TS team and they felt the same. This is like something my mind could never had even swallowed, let alone be able to ever build! Nice job!
pmkary··on 20 years working on the same software product
In my last job I built a cross platform thing with Flutter, and it was very early on the desktop thing, so I had to basically write the whole widget kit, from the ground up. Define what is a button and how should it work in desktop with mouse/keyboard and phone with touch. And it took around 2 years, once it was done they replaced it with a web version because hiring flutter devs was hard and expensive and no one cared :)

I totally agree, and really love the music space. There's just so much pure creativity there.
pmkary··on Jeff Bezos exerts more control of Washington Post opinion
Remember the days when he had just bought the paper and said: "No I have nothing to do with it, they just needed the money", me neither, such silly things I say...

Makes me so happy to see people like this exist. All good software, really all good software, is indie small ones made with love and care whose authors also lived a good life outside of the cubicle mess. (I know about the exaggeration, but really, 95% of what I love is indie software, you don't find that kind of creativity and love in any company)
pmkary··on Paper Apps
This is both very funny and very sad :)

Paper is its own thing. if you think about it, the todo list in the computer was first a skeuomorph of the paper one. Now people have become so alienated from the paper that someone has brought their computer todo to the paper :))))

Not only this does not promote the paper, but is a huge promotion for the computer! By being a constant reminder to the notebook's owner: "this is not a computer", one will have no choice but to keep thinking of all the things they miss in their todo from a dynamic medium :))))

pmkary··on Fair Pricing
Awesome Kagi, always the awesome Kagi.
pmkary··on A Minimalist TypeScript for C
nice!
pmkary··on New 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 on sale now at $120
Wasn't the whole point of Raspberry Pi being cheap and accessible?
pmkary··on Little Snitch: Network Monitor and Application Firewall for macOS
I have had it for years, and every once in a while, there's a red light flashing in my menubar, making me smile as one more tracker goes empty-handed today.
pmkary··on CSS gets a new logo and it uses the color `rebeccapurple`
The bar for a logo has become so low. I don't understand how we reached here and everyone are happy about it.
pmkary··on Why the Guardian is no longer posting on X
This is really good news. Despite all the comments here, standing up to Must is a necessity. People like us leaving and using Mastodon is not significant, big corporations leaving is the thing. (For whatever reason) I'm happy to see people not playing along with Musk.
pmkary··on Manual for PUB (a markup language in 1971) – Larry Tesler
I actually came across this manual two months ago and studied it in deep. Your comment was greatly appreciated, I will research all of them. Thank you!
pmkary··on Manual for PUB (a markup language in 1971) – Larry Tesler
Pub getting attention made my day. I wondered how everyone forgot about it and how no one ever mentioned that it actually gave birth to TeX and Web. Good job hacker news
pmkary··on Employees Describe an Environment of Paranoia and Fear Inside Automattic
That is seriously sad
pmkary··on Google's Chrome Browser Starts Disabling uBlock Origin
Hoping for a day without evil corp Google and its Chrome.
pmkary··on Optimizing Guile Scheme
Makes me happy when I see Guile is alive and going.

pmkary··on Intel Solidifies $3.5B Deal to Make Chips for Military
It's a very uneducated feeling, but it feels as a new low for them. Given the ARM/AMD races that seem to have put a shadow on Intel in the past few years. Intel used to be a source of inspiration at least for me, and this makes me sad seeing them become defense contractors.
pmkary··on Ask HN: Why Is Stack Overflow Fading Away?
People are so mean there. I've seen those who say they love Stack Overflow, but to me, it always feels like I ask a real question that has been haunting me for a long time. At times, I reach the point where I think, "to hell with it," and I ask on SO. For example, I once asked a very specific question about how to manually layout text in GTK, and people responded as if they were noob questions (which honestly they were not). They bully you for not having searched the web, even though you did search and found nothing. This bullying makes you feel dumb, and then most of the time, they just give you a look and walk away without helping you.

For me, it has always been about searching Google. If it led to SO, I would check the solutions, but most of the time, they didn't work. There would always be a blog somewhere with someone nice enough to put in the effort and explain things in detail. Once I got used to this, LLMs emerged, which are so much better. They provide solutions and combinations that make wild things easy, even those without documentation. And they do so instantly and pleasantly. No LLM bullies you for not having searched the web and then walks away. I'm kind of glad that SO is fading; there's a lot of bullying that is running into oblivion.

pmkary··on Help Merge Xcode Like Mini-Map Section Headers into VSCode
The amazing David Gileadi has contributed Xcode like minimap section headers to Visual Studio code, the code is done and all the feedback from the vs code team has also been applied.

But the PR is not being noticed by the VS Code's Team and the David has been patching and keeping the branch update with the code for six months now.

Please make this go to the top in hacker news and in GitHub so that they notice it and merge it!

With a lots of thanks for your support!

I always wanted to have a way to click a button and learn something really interesting and new.

There are really interesting channels on YouTube, but they only go so far, Wikipedia's random button only lands on random celebrities/places. I wanted something like a Tom Scott video: New and not found.

So I made a bot that asks OpenAI's DaVinci model to suggest a less-heard topic in science and then asks it to provide a description (with a good link).

It's so empowering. You just don't believe how much we can learn from it and to me it has been one of the greatest gifts of AI and so I'm sharing it with you. Hope you learn as much as possible and enjoy it as I do.

If you're from OpenAI reading this, thanks a lot for making my dream a reality.

pmkary··on A calculator for the Terminal that renders beautiful math
Yeah. those beasts. I really like to have them implemented someday!
pmkary··on A calculator for the Terminal that renders beautiful math

pmkary··on A calculator for the Terminal that renders beautiful math
As I told, it's manly because of the the rendering. Brackets render much more pretty, but the other is true as much. Yeah people with normal layouts.
pmkary··on A calculator for the Terminal that renders beautiful math
Actually Id love to. I did a bad choice of writing Nota in Haskell. I will rewrite it in JavaScript so that I can also port it to the web and then if possible I will add as much more capability as I can. Symbolic is super cool but hard to implement, I should see how much time I have and how much others are willing to help.

I was thinking of having A for a and A’ for A and. It’ll easily fix the problem for the ones who wanna have different cases for single letters
