I don't suppose I could induce the ACM to come up with a covert plan to protect the lives of the unborn? I mean, if you're going to involve yourself in politics, you should be balanced and disinterested about it right?
pmdulaney··on Do You Back into a Parking Spot or Back Out?
I first noticed my next-door neighbor doing this in his driveway. I figured it was he was a retired fireman.
pmdulaney··on Shingles Vaccine Linked to Slower Biological Aging in Older Adults
When I got the shingles vaccine two years ago it was the worst I've had in terms of site pain and general malaise, but certainly wasn't as bad as some people here are recounting.

My pharmacist said he knew someone who had gone blind in one eye from shingles, so that was a vivid motivator for me to get vaccinated!

pmdulaney··on Rows Are Made for Sorting and That's Just What We'll Do [pdf]
Love the nod to Nancy Sinatra!
pmdulaney··on Film Students Are Having Trouble Sitting Through Movies, Professors Say
I'm a boomer and even I have to say that some of those old movies on TCM move at a g-l-a-c-i-a-l pace.
pmdulaney··on Grok is still undressing men
But, mutatis mutandis, that is the same (objectionable) thing it was doing to women.
pmdulaney··on Steve Jobs' son says he can help end cancer deaths – and he's raised $$$$
Did Steve Jobs go to Reed College -- is that where his son's name came from?

pmdulaney··on Tell HN: Drowning in information but still missing everything
I would say, seriously, find a new job. It is demeaning to a human being to be in the position you find yourself, especially if there's no light at the end of the tunnel.

But if leaving this job is not a viable option at this time, I would say: Take advantage of your innate strength as a human being, which is to say, intuitive thinking. You're never going to match a machine when it comes to quantitative analysis of huge bodies of data.

pmdulaney··on Do not fall for complex technology
I agree completely. My notes are about evenly divided between vim textfiles and handwritten notes on 8.5 x 11 sheets of light green (easy on the eyes), lined, hole-punched paper.
pmdulaney··on NorCal Fitness company allegedly sold cake batter as $75 per bag protein powder
Reminds me of the Seinfeld fat-free frozen yogurt episode.
pmdulaney··on Dr. Gladys West, Mathematician Whose Work Made GPS Possible, Has Died at 95
Sounds like what she did was help refine the mathematical model of the earth, known as the geoid. It is roughly spherical, but only roughly. The biggest source of earth's deviation from spherical is its rotation about the N-S axis, which causes the radius from earth center to a point on the equator to be significantly larger than the radius from earth center to either the North Pole or the South Pole.
pmdulaney··on We do know that Waymos are safer than human drivers
I think that even if they do end up being safer statistically, they will fail differently than humans, so that people learning of Waymo accidents will correctly say, "I NEVER would have done something that stupid!"
pmdulaney··on World's Safest Airline Rankings for 2026
From "Qantas never crashed" to No. 3.
pmdulaney··on The three most common hallucinations
This being HN, I was expecting this to be about LLM-related hallucinations. I didn't read the whole thing, but it appears to be about actual human hallucinations.

pmdulaney··on Ask HN: What are your favorite aphorisms?
"Always give your real reason for not doing something."

For example, a friend wants you to join a fiction book group, but you just don't like reading novels. Don't say, "I'm sorry, I don't have a car on Thursday nights" -- your friend may figure out how to get you a ride, or perhaps offer to switch the group meeting to a different night. In which case, you either end up doing something you don't want or coming off as a jerk for not giving your real reason in the first place.

pmdulaney··on Show HN: A free affinity diagramming tool, in a single HTML file
I'm a retired engineer who does almost everything in vim, but this looks tempting even to me. Thank you!
pmdulaney··on Ask HN: What did you read in 2025?
I always get those two mixed up too!
pmdulaney··on Testosterone administration reduces lying in men (2012)
Would it be an unwarranted extrapolation to infer that women lie more than men then?
pmdulaney··on Ask HN: What do you consider fun?
Never mind -- I get it. (I was thinking maybe you were talking about mesh wire screens or something.)
pmdulaney··on Ask HN: What do you consider fun?
Zero screens needed? I don't follow.
pmdulaney··on America's collapsing consumption is the disenshittification opportunity
Is there still an opportunity to put "enshittification" in an early grave?
pmdulaney··on The truth physics can no longer ignore
But as Faraday said, "Nothing is too wonderful to be true."
pmdulaney··on The Methuselah Worm

pmdulaney··on Americans are holding onto devices longer than ever and it's costing the economy
It's sort of a big Prisoner's Dilemma situation: What's best for me is for everyone else to be a spendthrift (for the sake of the economy) while I myself behave frugally and prudently.
pmdulaney··on Let's Not Bring Back the Gatekeepers
In this longish essay/opinion piece, the non-woke but left-of-center author waffles back and forth on whether the wokish social media gatekeepers who were in the ascendancy until recently had a net positive impact on social discourse. And such is the paradoxical nature of our present reality that such waffling is the best way of nudging forward. No confident assertion of unambiguous "truth" would serve nearly so well.
pmdulaney··on Why Ed(1)?
The "visible editing history" trait is why I like dc for arithmetic calculations -- AND because it's reverse Polish.
pmdulaney··on Show HN: The Taka Programming Language
Is there an advantage to using PN as opposed to RPN? Those of us used to Forth, PostScript, dc, might find it difficult to switch paradigms.
