pmdulaney··on GLP-1 drugs put $73B in global food value at risk, report finds
This is like lamenting (if it were the case) that Johnson & Johnson is facing a shortfall in its bandage business because men aren't battering their wives and girlfriends as much as they did before.
pmdulaney··on The Paradox of Free Time
It is related to one of the seven deadly sins: sloth. But the English word that transliterates the original Greek word is acedia.
pmdulaney··on 100 Objects #11: Brannock Device
My dad used to like to tell the story of how, when he was a boy in the 1930s, shoe stores would measure your foot with an X-ray machine!
pmdulaney··on The Book Your Tech Boss Doesn't Want You to Read
This book has received the imprimatur of Mayor Mamdani.
pmdulaney··on Why Tokyo transit gates process contactless cards in under 100ms
The question is not why -- which is trivial -- but how.
pmdulaney··on A searchable library of forgotten public-domain film clips from 1915 onward
I don't see how to access the search function. All I see are example videos.
pmdulaney··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
yeah
pmdulaney··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
I like it: a philosophical take.

What I would say is: "I assume that people who don't put the same value on the principle of self-sufficiency that I do would support a scheme to allow people of lesser means to buy groceries on the open market at a lower price than is permitted to me."

pmdulaney··on New satellites and artificial intelligence are transforming wildfire detection
Is AI going to put smokejumpers out of business?
pmdulaney··on Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland now all have nationalist first ministers
Donald Trump would like to see Ireland reunited. I can't tell from this article if Northern Ireland wants reunification or simply wants to be severed from the UK.
pmdulaney··on Grigori Perelman
A fascinating and brilliant man! I personally would say, however, that he suffers from an overly scrupulous conscience. He should allow himself to be an advocate for himself rather than taking on the role of arbiter of what is fair in the world of mathematics.
pmdulaney··on André Weil and the Hodge Conjecture
Two factoids of interest:

1. André was the older brother of philosopher Simone Weil.

2. "Weil" is a jumbled version of "Levi" adopted by some so as to be less conspicuously Jewish, and thus be less likely to be persecuted or discriminated against.

pmdulaney··on A few weeks of X's algorithm can make you more right‑wing
Nobody can make you feel conservative without your consent.

     -- Eleanor Roosevelt *mutatis mutandis*
pmdulaney··on The Ancient Greek Water Clock That Kept the Most Accurate Time for 1,800 Years
If you are a tinkerer you will be impressed by the video.
pmdulaney··on A faster way to convert a timestamp to hour, min, SEC
Nuts and bolts geekiness. I love it
pmdulaney··on My new favourite habit tracker is vibecoded and I don't know what to do about it
Well, it's not like AI discovered a cure for your child's terminal illness...
pmdulaney··on US police fear Meta smart glasses could be used to secretly record them
Could be?
pmdulaney··on School librarians hesitant to discuss books amid Texas battle to restrict titles
I too am a Christian conservative, but I would offer this compromise: Let the liberals keep their beloved books in the school library but allow the conservatives to veto any book they find objectionable from actually being assigned in the classroom.
pmdulaney··on New method predicts where massive earthquakes will strike
Depending on how precise its predictions are, it could eventually affect real estate values.
pmdulaney··on The joke that changed my life
The moral of the story is that stereotypes are fine if they are without malice. But remember to always treat every person you meet as an individual, not as one sample of a particular group.
pmdulaney··on Thanks to Lake Ontario, MapQuest is popular all over again
On the back of a cocktail napkin, I drew a map of you...
pmdulaney··on The Unknown Unknown Unknown

From Aristotle?

Along the same lines: "Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence." -- Robert Frost

pmdulaney··on New spinning drone hides in plain sight
love it!
pmdulaney··on How to Stop the Enshittification of America
First, stop using the word "enshittification."
pmdulaney··on What did the Romans ever do for Christianity?
If it weren't for a small group of Romans the Church would not have its greatest theological document, Paul's letter to the Romans.
pmdulaney··on Write the Documentation First
Totally agree. Not only does writing the documentation first lead to a better product, it also fosters a much more satisfying work experience. You get yourself into an ever-deepening "tail wagging the dog" situation when the implementation precedes the documentation -- especially if the documentation is being written by one party and implemented by another.
pmdulaney··on Bali bans Dutch expats whose run club allegedly excluded Indonesians
It is always difficult to balance discrimination concerns against freedom of association -- even in those countries that recognize a right to freedom of association.
