pmastela··on New technique makes AI models leaner and faster while they're still learning
Researchers use control theory to shed unnecessary complexity from AI models during training, cutting compute costs without sacrificing performance.
pmastela··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
I recall he made changes at the beginning of the year specifically because "it's time to get back to our roots around free expression."

pmastela··on The rise of surge pricing: ‘It will eventually be everywhere’

pmastela··on What if ChatGPT was trained on decades of financial news and data?
How does it go? The trend is your friend — until it bends in the end. I’m sure trading firms are already fervently working to have the new AI to identify these trends faster and sooner, and when exactly the trend will bend in the end. Probably not too crazy of an idea to imagine the distribution of profitable stock following the power law and the entire market getting dominated by superhuman stock-picking AI. As long as the chat prompt optimizes for some human quality like “lessen human suffering” or “improve the human condition” then let’s give this experiment a go.
pmastela··on Ok, it’s time to freak out about AI
I agree, but alas tis the motions that are followed. OpenAI went from singing praises of open-sourcing AI to now flagellating themselves for having done so [1]. Won't do much unless like the author says "a collective, enforceable decision must be made to slow the development of these technologies" which like yeah...good luck with that.

pmastela··on Apple TV+ to adapt William Gibson’s cyberpunk novel Neuromancer
I wouldn’t mind paying for a service to auto manage cancelations and renewals of streaming services.

pmastela··on US carriers want to bring “screen zero” lock screen ads to smartphones
imo this should be outlawed but that’s just my personal preference. The same opinion applies to billboards along roads. I already paid for the phone and for the roads so imo I’m entitled to use those things without unwarranted solicitations for my attention.
pmastela··on Investors bought a record share of U.S. homes in 2021
I believe there’s a name for what you’re describing: the Cantillon Effect.

> An 18th century French banker and philosopher named Richard Cantillon noticed an early version of this phenomenon in a book he wrote called ‘An Essay on Economic Theory.’ His basic theory was that who benefits when the state prints a bunch of money is based on the institutional setup of that state. In the 18th century, this meant that the closer you were to the king and the wealthy, the more you benefitted, and the further away you were, the more you were harmed. Money, in other words, is not neutral. This general observation, that money printing has distributional consequences that operate through the price system, is known as the “Cantillon Effect.” [1]

pmastela··on American Airlines and The Points Guy are suing each other
Gotta love Streisand Effect. I did not know TPG had an app, and now it’s on my Home Screen. Thanks, AA!
pmastela··on Climate tipping points are now imminent, scientists warn
My feelings exactly. Just know that you’re not alone.
pmastela··on Vaccines and our return to office plans
I’d agree that some employers have a vested interested while others do not. Mainly the ones that don’t rely so much on the social aspect to survive like delivery services, streaming services, video games, etc [1]. Goes without saying that to prolong the pandemic prolongs people’s suffering in order to boost one’s bottom line is morally reprehensible.

pmastela··on Vaccines and our return to office plans
Someone needed to go first to try and get a leg up on the competition in terms of productivity or whatever KPI the company is tracking, and it seems Google is first Big Tech Co to go. It will be interesting to see just how exactly this all will play out considering some in the workforce are vaccine hesitant. I wonder if, besides proof of vaccination, health checks will be required to enter the campus, or if masks will need to be worn at all times indoors, or if social distancing will still need to be observed.
pmastela··on Bye-bye, Bitcoin: It's time to ban cryptocurrencies
As long as it’s advantageous to those who own these publications to accumulate their share of BTC, ETH, or what have you, and once they’re satisfied the narrative will change.
pmastela··on Becoming a Chess Grandmaster
Chess is to humans as Bitcoin is to computers (Chess : Humans :: Bitcoin : Computers). Except humans stick up for the wastefulness of both, and computers stay silent on the matter.
pmastela··on To protect against weaponized drones, we must understand their key strengths
> I wonder how long until DIY weaponized drones are available to common criminals.

Common criminals are using commodity drones for reconnaissance [1].

pmastela··on 43% of South African youths are not in employment, education or training
Yuval Noah Harari argues the same [1]. Whereas the 20th century was a century of workers fighting exploitation, now the 21st century might be workers — or more generally people — fighting irrelevance. When so much work can be performed by machines, human labor will not be necessary like it was before.

pmastela··on Tesla loses U.S. designation for some advanced safety features
thanks for answering my question. wow, "wipe the upgrade and charge for it again"... what a racket smh
pmastela··on Can Removing Highways Fix America’s Cities?
It feels refreshing to see cities like Rochester, New York take on a rather large project in 2014 and complete it by 2021. Gives me hope that other cities can follow suit and be reborn as human first and car second.
pmastela··on U.S. moves to double Canadian lumber tariffs
Am I completely out of the loop or is this sarcasm? I thought the lumber costs were skyrocketing and housing prices were too. At least in the US, I thought this was the case.
pmastela··on Tesla loses U.S. designation for some advanced safety features
It’s a “loan” insofar the interest is paid out in over-the-air FSD updates and the principle is irrecoverable.
pmastela··on Tesla loses U.S. designation for some advanced safety features
> the worst part is that it's not even transferable from one car to another.

That would make sense to do it that way: Sell FSD as some sort of license that always works in any Tesla one drives.

How does it currently work? If someone sells their Tesla does the FSD package follow the car or does the new owner need to purchase FSD for that car?

pmastela··on Greenland’s ice sheet is releasing huge amounts of mercury into rivers
Could you elaborate as what about the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet was concerning to Sir David King? Is it the mercury that is released or the rising sea levels it will cause or something else?

pmastela··on U.S. adds just 266,000 jobs in April, far below expectations
Since a lot of policy was based off of these employment forecasts which turned out to be way off, what are the expected adjustments to the policies in place?
pmastela··on Tip Jar
Seems like a lot of taps to send a tip.

I was expecting an experience closer to Tippin.me [1] where there's a click to tip, and another to confirm. Tippin.me, happens to be built on Bitcoin's Lightning Network so maybe Twitter will leverage Square's (also run by Jack Dorsey who's keen on Bitcoin) CashApp to do something similar in the future.

I could see the tip jar functionality go in the direction where a user deposits some amount of BTC to Twitter (opens up a LN channel with Twitter in the backend) and then a tap or click on the tip button results in a preset 100 sats tip.
