plufz··on Ex-Apple engineer says Apple deliberately slows older phones via updates
Yeah Apple is smart enough to know that large conspiracies tend to leak sooner or later. Your solution would absolutely have been my choice if I wanted to slow down old iPhones, and I’m quite sure the leadership at Apple are smarter than me.

But wasn’t that just a setting changing it to default to fn? It was some time since I last used them…

That I can agree on. The right for children to by energy drinks is something different for me.

You and I have very different ideas of dystopia.

I also have things I want to change in gatekeeper, but that feature is not one of them. Just gut feeling but I would say 110% of all users, would just click ”start” on every unsigned app if it was that easy.
plufz··on Show HN: Red Squares – GitHub outages as contributions
See previous days articles. Agentic coding. Going from 1b annual commits to estimated 14b or more from one year to another.

plufz··on How fast is a macOS VM, and how small could it be?
I need this too, and looked quite a lot on it a year ago. I haven’t had time to check out the recent developments with Docker Model Runner (vllm-metal) or podman libkrun. Did neither of those work for you?
plufz··on Can you stop beans from making you gassy?
Yeah, I eat beans all the time and don’t have any reaction to them. Anecdata but in my experience only people who eat very little beans react to them. But I haven’t researched it.
plufz··on Meta employees are up in arms over a mandatory program to train AI on their
Obviously it happens but I think you’ll have a hard time arguing that worker rights are as bad in the EU as in the US.

ITUC Global Rights Index (2025)

Europe: 2.78 Nordics: 1.0–1.2 Western Europe: 2.0–2.3

Americas: 3.68 United States: 4

I couldn’t find per state US numbers but the difference is obviously huge.

Solve our energy problems first? How would decreasing cattle stop work on improving our energy system? I think a lot points to that we need to do both (and yesterday). It’s not like agriculture is a small part of our greenhouse gas emissions (25-35% globally).

plufz··on Native Instant Space Switching on macOS
I guess that depends on what you put into the word "success". I dont believe that great design work or great products and high market cap has ever been that related to each other.

With that said I dont think Steve built Apple alone either. And i think they have done some great things after his death as well.

plufz··on Help Keep Thunderbird Alive
This in a larger perspective at least, IS a problem for NGO:s from what i know. That donors seems to be much more careful where they money go when its in the form of a donation. I dont know about open source project specifics here. I totally get what you mean and probably mostly agree as well, but the money you give to corporations have consequences as well. You can for example fund a company you have strong moral disagreements with without knowing or miss a company that you would want to support for the opposite reasons.

With that said I also think we should expect more then "it helps fund the development". Its not that difficult to write a couple paragraphs more and be a little more specific. Then again, maybe they get so little in donations that they cant really say how the money will be used and its more of a "buy me a beer" type of thing to keep the developers happy. Unless suddenly people start giving more and a developer actually could invest more hours in the project.

plufz··on Show HN: Cq – Stack Overflow for AI coding agents
Security issues aside, I really like the idea of a common open database with this kind of agent docs. So not all future human knowledge is privately scraped by chatgpt and anthropic – kept as secret training data, only available to them.

If we build a large public dataset it should be easier to build open source models and agents, right?

I can’t talk for the US but here in Sweden most news media have fewer journalists today. Is that not the case in your country or in what way is it a mirage?
plufz··on When does MCP make sense vs CLI?
Im still struggling with understanding when MCP works better. I move everything to cli after a while. Can you give me more concrete examples? Because I don’t doubt you, I just don’t understand.
plufz··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
But is that really the problem in big tech today? To me it looks like sooner or later they cave from their ideals (or leadership changes) and that the reason every time is that they want to make even more money.
plufz··on Hugging Face Skills
My only strategy is what used to be called slash-commands but are also skills now, I.e I call them explicitly. I think that actually works quite well and you can allow specific tools and tell it to use specific hooks for security of validation in the frontmatter properties.

plufz··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
But what about my banking app! I think it’s only fair Apple take 30% on every transaction I make. After all they put in a huge amount of work validating and making sure my banking app is safe and functional.

Edit: Maybe I am greedy now, but it would be nice if large transactions like say buying a house only would cost me a 15% transaction fee to Apple.
