plongeur··on Is There Enough Meat for Everyone?
Your argument is wrong for obvious reasons. Of course you have to invest loads of resources into a single cow before you can eat it ... I mean that's not hard to grasp.

Furthermore it is completely pointless to compare economics of ancient cultures with a modern industrialized civilization.

plongeur··on Elon Musk's first wife on what it takes to become a billionaire
So, at the end of the day ...

... we are all just single, elementary experiments within a gigantic, global monte carlo simulation :)

All you can hope for is that your random configuration plays well - b/c you will never know for sure - it's the supervising virtual and hypthetical power evaluating your performance after termination as a statistic.

Then again - don't strive for material satisfaction and you will be a billionaire immediately - and your currency is happiness.

plongeur··on Trapped into Selling Magazines Door-To-Door
> “Oh my God, can you grab him?” I shouted at the woman at the door, as my 3-month-old puppy darted out into the cold and I tried to stop my 6-year-old twins from following suit. She obliged, and I was able to get a proper look at her. It was in the 30s outside, unseasonably cold for Florida, and the young woman holding my squiggling puppy was wearing nothing but a light spring sweater, shivering and looking miserable. I invited her in. ... "

I fell asleep by the end of that paragraph - gimme the fac's, dude ...

plongeur··on Parserator – A family of probabalistic parsers
Are you working for an NGO, like Open Data Foundation or something like that?

I'd be interested in following your progress. You can send me a mail, so we can connect.

plongeur··on Parserator – A family of probabalistic parsers
You are? That's interesting, b/c that also something I am currently working on.

What do you need the grammatical parsing for? Identification of named entities?

plongeur··on Would You Let the I.R.S. Prepare Your Taxes?
Just that the process you described is risky ("penalize") and seemingly more complicated than filing a tax return.
plongeur··on Would You Let the I.R.S. Prepare Your Taxes?
The amount of taxes being collected throughout the year are by design higher than what you actually owe to the government. That's the same in most countries.

Of course you can get your overpaid taxes back by means of the tax return - but a lot of people don't have the money or time or knowledge to do that.

The overpaid money is to the government if requested back, an interest-free loan - if not requested back, a gift.

If the government would now tell the IRS to fill out the form for you - then there would be significantly less income - due to more accurate taxation.

plongeur··on Subway station toilets: a surprisingly accurate indicator of urban civilisation
Well, with regards to what "Westeners" nowadays consider civilized - Singapore is lagging behind SF I'd care to argue. Just consider gay rights and expressing affection in public - so in that respect there is rather an anti-correlation between cleanliness of public facilities and cultural development.
plongeur··on Inconvenient Truths About the Apple Watch
It's so "Apple" to that obsessed with pixel densitites ...
plongeur··on Video shows Tulsa police killing man as officer uses gun not Taser 'by mistake'
Of course, but intelligent people react to new qualities - and this case is super-weird and gets even more tasteless when you see the cops on the clip and how the act. It just doesn't make sense.
plongeur··on Video shows Tulsa police killing man as officer uses gun not Taser 'by mistake'
It's absolutely ridiculous. And I don't get why this isn't upvoted more. There have been several much less serious cases been recently on the front page.

I guess HN voting is simply tilted all the way. (Note to myself: Need more fake accounts)

plongeur··on Fatal silence: Why do so many fortysomething men kill themselves?
Why do you think you have failed?

Because the superficial rule set of your surrounding social group dictates so?

If you don't harm other people and every now and then make someone happy or smile - then you did not, do not and will not fail!

Guys like Donald Trump are failures [1] - you most likely are not.

Do something to reshift perspectives if you're stuck in one that makes you feel so bad about your life that you even associate this with the subject at hand. Travelling, reading, moving, meditating, ...

Pretty sad story ... I observed this kind of scenario myself :/
plongeur··on BuzzFeed denies deleting critical articles to appease advertisers
Okay, so I just had a look at BuzzFeed - let's see what we got there:

- The Battle for Brazil

- 17 Iced Teas That Will Quench Your Thirst This Spring

- 10 Things That Look Exactly Like Kylie Jenner’s New Hair

- 12 Things You Only Let Your Bff Do

- FYI The Twins From “The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody” Are Like Really Hot

- Can You Guess The Season Of “Law & Order: SVU” From A Screencap Of Olivia Benson?

- ...

Now, worrying about the integrity of BuzzFeed strikes me as slightly hypocritical - I mean, it's yellow pages 2.0 at the end of the day - isn't it?

plongeur··on Virginia Police Caught Assaulting Teens, Video Deletion Fails
So? What country are you referring to? In Germany f.x. they do carry pepper spray and tasers and a gun and in most other countries as well. What's your point?
plongeur··on Virginia Police Caught Assaulting Teens, Video Deletion Fails
I don't think so. If a Danish police officer tells somebody to leave the car and that person refuses - do you think they will back down and call it a night?
plongeur··on Virginia Police Caught Assaulting Teens, Video Deletion Fails
Then again ... if a cop tells you to leave the car and you then start to argue and to fight back instead of following the order.

What kind of reaction do you expect?

This would happen in any country.

plongeur··on Introduction to Linux, Free Course from the Linux Foundation
whooo .... I use Gnome and there's no malware
plongeur··on Introduction to Linux, Free Course from the Linux Foundation
I began the course last time it was offered on edX. And I didn't like this course at all. In my opinion it was pretty inefficient with regards to presentation of information, motivation of students, integration and realization of interactive lessons.

And that struck me as surprising given how often they emphasize how much experience they have with teaching. I took multiple edX and coursera classes from Alpha to Omega and this was one of the worst.

If you want to learn Linux - it's actually really simple:

1. Install Ubuntu (really easy)

2. IF you have a problem THEN Google it END

plongeur··on Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health?
+1 for intermittent fasting. Practicing it now for more than three months - also 16/8 and its great.

- It's simple as a method

- It's simplifying my daily routine

- It's simply good for my body and mind

I also reduced carbonhydrate-based food and instead focus on more protein. Energy from CH is depleted fast while energy from proteins gives me enough energy for the 16 hours of only water.

I also read Anna Karenina (I am a big fan of Russian literature) - but none the less (or maybe rather b/c of that) I am curious to learn how this book did change your perspective on your life?
