plinkplonk··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Kerala is having daily power cuts right now!
plinkplonk··on Thank HN: My bootstrapped startup got acquired today
This might be a dumb question, for which apologies in advance, but isn't 200 million a little low for a company with $ 50 million revenue? But maybe not, -- the profit is say $20 million and the acquirers are paying 10 X annual profit?
plinkplonk··on A Journey Through Spain’s Islamic History
"Kingdoms of Faith" by Brian Catlos is an excellent book about Al Andalus, from the Arab invasion to the fall of Granada (the aftermath is not covered extensively).
plinkplonk··on Open-Sourcing My YC Application (Athens Research, W21)
wow! the YC application has changed quite a bit since the early days. Employment history and "Should you be selected for interview, we may ask for references"!
plinkplonk··on Seattle becomes first U.S. city to ban caste discrimination
Tamil Brahmins usually use the father's first name as the last name for the child.

so wheras in the North, you'd have Narayan Sharma's son being named Vishal Sharma, in Tamil Nadu Sriram Narayan's son would be Vishal Sriram.

So yes, the system does exist

Due Disclosure: South Indian, not a Brahmin, but I have many friends whose names follow this system.

plinkplonk··on Ask HN: How to learn math from zero for adults?
What helped me get a grip on learning mathematics was learning to prove theorems.

Working through Daniel Velleman's book "How to Prove It" (the only pre requisite is that you can understand boolean logic, which programmers have no problem with), and then a Set Theory book (I used Enderton) set me up to tackle (proof based) Linear Algebra, Analysis etc.

Just my personal experience. Hope this helps.

plinkplonk··on User Disengagement
Zerodha built a market leading company with conservative tech choices, about 30 devs, and no VC funding. Conservatively estimated to be worth about $2 billion, last I checked.

Very hard to pull this off, especially in a market like India, with a lot of stupid money folks chasing companies with flimsy / non existent business models.

plinkplonk··on Ask HN: The book that did it for you in math and/or CS?
Thanks for this. "Proof idea" is a phrase that concretizes a vague intuition I had about something that exists between a theorem and it's proof
plinkplonk··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
Replied!
plinkplonk··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
I have a few questions but you don't have your email in your hn and profile. :-)
plinkplonk··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
Which system of Chi Kung(if you don't mind) ?
plinkplonk··on India Counting Down to 1B Doses
that makes sense. Trump and Modi have much in common.
plinkplonk··on India Counting Down to 1B Doses
Imagine if Joe Biden's photo was on every vaccine card issued in the USA!
plinkplonk··on Tell HN: Amplitude (YC W12) just went public – AMA
Congratulations Spenser!

From the YC article

"But, in fact, they rather quickly settled on a different problem space that they understood deeply and which immediately resonated with their batchmates. It was also a problem for which the market had not yet, in Spenser and Curtis’s opinion, come up with a great solution. Their chosen target was, of course, mobile analytics. This, it turned out, was precisely the right idea for the team. "

How did you come up with/converge to this idea? what was the thinking process? TIA

plinkplonk··on Ask HN: Is Signal Down?
Down, Bangalore, India
plinkplonk··on Ask HN: Help me get my friend,a retired US Army officer, into IT management
then he probably shouldn't be managing people who do (programming)
plinkplonk··on Learn C and build your own Lisp (2014)
The book skips major components of a lisp implementation - garbage collection, macros - as "bonus projects" to be implemented by nhe reader.
plinkplonk··on No ID, no vaccines for Indonesia’s invisible people
India also demands government Id for covid vaccination. No Id, no vaccine. ( These days there is a desperate shortage of vaccines for everyone, which is another story for another time)
plinkplonk··on Facebook ‘looking into’ hiding of posts calling for PM’s resignation in India
>I don’t understand what Modi is doing.

I assure you, neither does he.

Not a particularly intellectual or introspective man. He is a living example of the Peter Principle.

Too bad a billion people have to suffer for his incompetence.

plinkplonk··on Why did I leave Google or, why did I stay so long?
"I don't believe long hours are a badge of honor but I also believe that we have to do whatever it takes to win, even if its on a weekend."

Especially when said "doing" is done by other people (engineers, testers,SREs etc) , not the manager.

Easy enough to hold such beliefs when the cost is paid by others.

plinkplonk··on Still alive
(fwiw) you could have left the question out and your second sentence would have conveyed your intent perfectly.
plinkplonk··on CS631: Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment
> It was one of the two most challenging, rewarding courses in my undergrad degree.

which was the other?

plinkplonk··on Per Brinch Hansen's books on compilers
Wow Thank You! I've been looking for the Pascal compiler book for a long time!
plinkplonk··on Ask HN: Production Lisp in 2020?
Julia
plinkplonk··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
How does this work with Apple phones? Will apple make set up of their phones dependent on installing government spyware first? How do they handle this in China?

And does this mean that android permissions no longer work? What if people just make location and gps unavailable to the app after installation?

plinkplonk··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
Done!
plinkplonk··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
(I am Indian and live in India fwiw) How about 10k Rs to be donated to the winner's favorite charity? How about 1 January 2022 as a settlement date? If the app is still mandatory on that date, I win, else you do.
plinkplonk··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
>the IT sweatshops that produced it.

"The app, conceived by NITI Aayog, has been developed in two weeks by the National Informatics Centre in collaboration with the developers of makemytrip.com and 1mg.com." [1]

None of these are sweatshops.

plinkplonk··on “Evolving Erlang into a modern statically typed programming language”
From the Gleam FAQ

"How is message passing typed?

Gleam doesn't currently have first class support for the BEAM's concurrency primitives such as receive, send, and spawn. This is because research is still ongoing as to the best way to apply a strong type system to them while still enabling established OTP patterns. For now these primitives should be used via the Erlang FFI, making them dynamically typed.

Many OTP patterns such as gen_server are functional in nature and don't require direct use of these primitives so these behaviours can be implemented in Gleam today."

I suspect the FB language might solve this.

plinkplonk··on To get good, go after the metagame
yes, the author seems to use "metagame" to mean a combination of pre-game strategizing (including creation opponent specific strategy) and post game review (+ absorbing lessons learned into the pre game strategizing for the next game).
