pletsch··on Tesla jumps 14% on S&P 500 inclusion speculation Now the 10th by market value
My mistake, I misunderstood your question, I was showing that there is more of a movement in general towards shifting to green energy. I'm not aware of any studies that show a comparison of emissions.
pletsch··on Tesla jumps 14% on S&P 500 inclusion speculation Now the 10th by market value
Here's a couple links, one a paper from McGill tying green energy and political power, and an article from National Geographic saying "Two-thirds of young adults (aged 18 to 34) say they’re inclined to vote for a political candidate who supports cutting greenhouse gas emissions and increasing financial incentives for renewable energy".

pletsch··on Tesla jumps 14% on S&P 500 inclusion speculation Now the 10th by market value
Completely agree, Tesla's stock has a bus factor of 1. I do believe it's made a big enough push already to spark the change to clean energy, and that's what really matters here.
pletsch··on Playstation's secret weapon: a nearly all-automated factory
It does feel like a downgrade. I would have paid more if I could have picked optional features. I'm not sure if they don't get that people don't buy a console to play the dashboard, give it to me barebones and lightning quick.
pletsch··on Playstation's secret weapon: a nearly all-automated factory
Really? I thought this at the start as well, but downloading games is fast, I have a wired connection (20MBd/15MBu) that I feel like is pretty solid. I also wondered if it was just my drive getting full, but I have about 180gb of space.
pletsch··on Playstation's secret weapon: a nearly all-automated factory
I love my PS4 but.. it's really slow. From turning on to getting in a party will take minutes, especially when loading the friends list and their profiles. Beyond this, getting everyone into the same lobby is also tedious due to host issues. I don't know if the Xbone has similar issues but I remember the 360 being able to sign in, be in a party with my friends in under 30 seconds and it just worked.
pletsch··on The next Olympics should include Fortnite
I'd be ok with Olympic chess.
pletsch··on What is the core of the Python programming language?
I'll give it another look, thanks for letting me know!
pletsch··on What is the core of the Python programming language?
I really liked Anvil, the thing that made me go back was the requirement for an enterprise account to not host on AWS.
pletsch··on How we launched our MVP in 3 weeks
I read it as the idea that a great company needs to have an MVP within a few weeks discourages people from taking moonshots.
pletsch··on Sugary drink tax models show health gains, cost reductions, but vary by design
I dealt with this for a while too. My solution was coffee (double double) so kept the sugar, but slowly went to black. I won't even go into a convenience store when I pump gas anymore, the cravings have stayed and its a battle everyday.
pletsch··on Sugary drink tax models show health gains, cost reductions, but vary by design
This is sort of the US Dept. of Ag playbook though. They subsidize the hell out of unprofitable ventures. Look at milk for another example, when the USMCA was being negotiated, the US wanted milk tariffs eliminated but refused to quit selling at lower than production costs. [0]

pletsch··on SpaceX applies to offer high-speed internet service to Canadians
13gb for $67? What the hell. I thought I had a great plan at 6 gbs for $55. I remember everyone getting the 10gb for $60 deal a while back but I missed out on that one.
pletsch··on SpaceX applies to offer high-speed internet service to Canadians
If it works as well as he is promising, he won't have to spend a dime, word will spread.
pletsch··on Show HN: Automatically Rename HEY's 'Imbox' to 'Inbox'
Counter point: Hey is asking you to commit for a year, if I was going to the same restaurant every day for a year, assuming the other ingredients are on the menu elsewhere, I would expect being able to make substitutions and change meals up a bit.
pletsch··on Show HN: Automatically Rename HEY's 'Imbox' to 'Inbox'
You can already whitelist by using a filter to send everything other than contacts to a folder you choose. I don't think I've ever had a need for batch replying. I do like the renaming subjects though, just not for $100/yr.
pletsch··on New Facebook tool allows employers to suppress “unionize” in workplace chat
I think this is the big problem, I was in the steelworkers union in Canada before going into tech and it made a lot of sense. It was a dangerous job and management was constantly trying to go around safety rules, so it made sense that we had a union to both fight for fair wages + safety practices. It was fairly cheap (vaguely remember it being $20ish/pay period) too.

I'm not sure tech has a similar need, wages are (generally) high, I would say safety is generally not a concern or where it is (data centers w/ noise), it's usually taken seriously. It's a hard sell.

pletsch··on I got a Ph.D. at age 66 (2018)
What's your PhD in?
pletsch··on Ask HN: Are my expectations on code quality and professionalism too high?
Does a captain of a ship do exactly what his crew wants all the time? No, because they're steering a ship and sometimes they have to make moves that not everyone will agree with.
pletsch··on German city wants to ditch Microsoft for Linux
Did a little bit of IT before dev, AD handles management of all the resources on the network. Authentication, backups, policies, Exchange for your email server is plugged into AD.

pletsch··on American Air’s $1 Price Target at Evercore Implies 92% Collapse
I'd be disappointed if it was Southwest, I always have a great experience with them. Wouldn't surprise me if they went with a budget airline and used the extra capacity that people don't fill with overpriced baggage to ship Prime products. It sounds like a nightmare to coordinate but I'm sure they could do it.
pletsch··on Wells Fargo temporarily suspending applications for home-equity lines of credit
I found one of the most important parts of K-12 is just learning to interact with people your own age + being able to work with people effectively.

Are you concerned about this? Or do you have a way to effectively replace this?

pletsch··on Launch HN: Art in Res (YC W20) – Buy art directly from artists
The site looks great, love the scale feature! What's your target demographic? I could see interior designers/companies who stage houses being a huge market for you.
pletsch··on Show HN: Magicdocs – Turn Documents into Websites
I know the product is for non-tech people to be able to use this, still would be nice if you had functionality for custom CSS.
pletsch··on Abe, IOC agree to delay Tokyo Olympics by one year
I wish we would quit moving it around. The Olympics could be quite profitable if countries didn't spend a fortune building for it.

If we held it in Athens (not sure if Olympia could support it?) for the summer, then have it rotate between countries that can host without massive infrastructure changes for the winter (NA - Calgary/Lake Placid, Europe - St. Moritz, Oslo Asia - Beijing, Pyeongchang).

pletsch··on Abe, IOC agree to delay Tokyo Olympics by one year
They're adults, they can see that the world is dealing with something significantly more important than the Olympics.
pletsch··on Ask HN: Have you been laid off?
Are all your clients technical? If not, might want to consider a revamp of your site, make it more what your work will do for them (online presence) than your specific skill set (PHP, Drupal).
