plerpin··on Ask HN: Is your employer paying for your new office space, your home?
I'm positive that tax law would get in the way of such a scheme.
plerpin··on Gnome removed solid-color backgrounds based on what developer's friends use
Ah, the science of UX.
plerpin··on Grieving for Apple
I had a similarly emotional schisms with Apple, but back in 1997. I finally became aware of Apple's penchant for designing "road apples" to fuck cost-conscious consumers. I worked hard as a teen to buy my 62XX Performa, but later when I found out that it was a piece of shit because Apple deliberately designed it as a piece of shit... well, fuck them, really. No respect for their buyers.

I switched to Windows in 1998 and didn't look back.

plerpin··on Nintendo 64 Architecture – A Practical Analysis
Very interesting, thanks.
plerpin··on Nintendo 64 Architecture – A Practical Analysis
How many layers did the Saturn's PCB have?
plerpin··on The public do not understand logarithmic graphs used to portray Covid-19
Simply asserting that graphs should communicate one purpose does not make it so. Multiple audiences require multiple techniques for visualization and analysis. A logarithmic scale communicates the characteristics of an exponential curve better than a linear scale.
plerpin··on Research into the reasons for trepanation (2016)
Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
plerpin··on Nintendo 64 Architecture – A Practical Analysis
Did Rambus have a dossier of compromising photos on industry executives in the mid 90's? Why did Intel and Nintendo go all in on such an expensive and technically inferior memory technology? The latency is such a killer, especially if you're on an architecture with really deep pipelines (ahem, P4).
plerpin··on Next dream job can be in an HTTP header
I saw this in a response from Crackle's CDN. Nothanks
plerpin··on Snow Crash: HBO Max adaptation of Neal Stephenson's 1992 cyberpunk novel
HBO Go, HBO Max, HBO Now. How many HBOs do we need?
plerpin··on It’s 25 years since Sega of America made its biggest mistake
Sega had a lot of prior experience with quad-based 3D games. Their Model 1 and Model 2 arcade boards used quads.
plerpin··on It’s 25 years since Sega of America made its biggest mistake
You can't compute a normals from a quad, which makes shading algorithms not work.
plerpin··on It’s 25 years since Sega of America made its biggest mistake
The Saturn also lacked an FPU.
plerpin··on Xi-editor – An editor for the next 20 years
Not much activity recently - why share this now?
plerpin··on Convincing-looking 90s fonts in modern browsers
LOL! Funny how doing something in 2020 takes ten times the resources for doing the same thing in 1995. Every pixel on these fonts is now a complex vector path.
plerpin··on Musk: Tesla will 'immediately' leave California over coronavirus shutdowns
He's like an embodiment of the know-it-all engineer meme, who thinks that domain expertise in one field makes him a genius everywhere else.

It's dangerous how prone he is to fashioning himself to be an authority on things he knows nothing about.

plerpin··on Dart team posts an example of fast code with 22ms for a “Hello world”
Yup. Dart has a runtime. Runtimes have to spin up when they're run cold.

But we shouldn't let facts get in the way of a good Hackernews hivemind dogpile. Dart bad!

plerpin··on Apple, Google ban location tracking in apps using their contact-tracing system
Read the fine specification.
plerpin··on IPFS 0.5
Lots of deferred pain for when you productionize.
plerpin··on IPFS 0.5
Understanding the concepts is one thing, applying them is another thing entirely. The Rust compiler is an incredibly difficult beast to placate.
plerpin··on Americans losing faith in what Trump says about the coronavirus: Reuters/Ipsos
He mentioned disinfectant, maybe sprayed on the lungs, maybe injected.

Watch the video or read the transcript yourself.

plerpin··on Coronavirus: Would you volunteer to be exposed? These Stanford grads did
Hats off to them.
plerpin··on French brotherhood burying the dead since 1188
Normally, folks in leadership positions behave as role models which make their population aspire to act better.

Now...

plerpin··on How SEO Ruined the Internet
I hate SEO. Google's ranking algorithm is basically an accretion of scar tissue built from years of SEO bullshit mitigations. If you make a ranking algorithm that does right by the user, and you're successful, it won't be long before SEOs come along and poison the well.
plerpin··on Yet another novel I will no longer write
I read Neptune's Brood and was hooked. It's a fun surreal sci-fi adventure/romp with a heck of a lot of really interesting, geeky tech interludes. Who knew a novel about futuristic accountancy and forex could be so intriguing?
plerpin··on Ask HN: Is HN a ‘healthy online community’? I’m doing a case study for a class
Kind of. There are a lot of smart people who think that their expertise in one narrow domain transfers universally. There is a lot of bikeshedding and reinventing concepts from first principles, often badly.
plerpin··on Help Take the Fight to COVID-19 with BOINC and Folding@Home
It's very configurable. I let BOINC go to town for up to an hour whenever I leave my computer alone, then the computer can go to sleep. It's not running continuously but the progress adds up steadily over time.
plerpin··on Apple CarPlay, Android Auto distract drivers more than pot, alcohol, says study
It's a ballsy move from Mazda. It's a move that definitely goes against the grain for consumer tech. It's better for drivers but I'm sure they lost some potential customers for sticking to their guns.
plerpin··on Open Source Ventilator Project
I wonder if coughing on an inversion table would work.
plerpin··on Alphabet, Walmart join U.S. effort to speed up coronavirus testing
I don't think the location history is very accurate. Either the polling interval is too low, or they use less power consuming location services, but Google fudges my history a good amount of time.
