plastic_bag··on YouTube: Adblockers violate YouTube's terms of service
True. But you could install the Sponsorblock extension. And if you are on Android you could also use the Revanced YouTube.

I pay for YouTube Premium because my mum uses an old Android phone and Revanced YouTube doesn't work on it. Also, my sister's kids watch YouTube on TV and they start crying rather loudly whenever an ad comes on.

I use uBlock to filter out Shorts on web.

And I use Revanced YouTube on my phone.

> Surely indians could find better things to spend their money on.

That's not for you and me to decide. Indians are perfectly capable of making their own purchasing decisions, good or bad.

> How long before they start paying for facebook accounts.

Might I remind you that WhatsApp was offered to Indians for free while the rest of the world was paying $1? There's no way Facebook would be pay to use. I hope it would be.

> India never fails to disappoint. A nation with immense potential and terrible leadership and no vision.

I am not going to comment on this as is it not relevant to the discussion.

And I use a paid Firefox extension (one time payment of $1) called DeArrow to replace clickbait thumbnails and titles.

There's also a free alternative:

plastic_bag··on YouTube: Adblockers violate YouTube's terms of service
I pay for YouTube Premium in India. It's ultra cheap here.

2.16 USD per month for both YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium for a family of 6.

That comes down to 36 cents per person per month.

But I still use the Revanced app on my phone and watch YouTube on my desktop with uBlock turned on for two reasons:

1. I can't stand Shorts. 2. I don't like the clickbait-y and cringe inducing thumbnails that every creator uses now.

plastic_bag··on India’s pickle people: Decades-old culinary heirlooms, nostalgia
I stand corrected. It is indeed ఊరగాయ.

> He loves it so much and abhors the mass manufactured stuff

Sounds like your uncle and I would get along really well.

It's sad that Bellam Avakaya (or Bellapu Avakaya as we call it in our home) is not as famous as the other varieties.

May I ask what made you to switch from Laravel to Next.js?
plastic_bag··on India’s pickle people: Decades-old culinary heirlooms, nostalgia
It's how it is Andhra Pradesh too.

ఆవకాయ a type of ఊరగాయ. Made with mangos obviously.

plastic_bag··on India’s pickle people: Decades-old culinary heirlooms, nostalgia
This brings back memories of my childhood. I am from a coastal village in (northern) Andhra Pradesh, India.

We call it "పచ్చడి" (pachchadi) in Telugu. If it were to be made in a process usual to the rest of the state (or the country), it would not last longer due the village's close proximity to the sea.

So my aunt and grandmother would also add jaggery to the pickle, to stop it from developing fungus sooner and to give it a sweet taste along with sour and spicy taste mango pickles are known for. This addition would give the pickle a deeper colour.

I always preferred it over the regular mango pickle.

plastic_bag··on Ask HN: What phone model do you currently own?
I bought the OnePlus 11R a few days when my phone at the time, the OnePlus 9, developed the infamous green line in just a year of ownership. OnePlus offered me about $400 as that device reached EoL and they were out of spares.

I had to buy the 11R specifically because I could use that money only to buy another OnePlus and I did want to shell out more money for the 11.

What would be my next phone? I don't know. I usually keep my phone for 4 to 5 years and I am biased towards Android. I will see what's in the market after 4 years.

plastic_bag··on Quiet – Encrypted P2P team chat with no servers, just Tor
The About section of the repo literally says "A private, p2p alternative to Slack and Discord built on Tor & IPFS ".

So the dev(s) are indeed claiming it's an alternative to both Slack and Discord.

plastic_bag··on Ask HN: Any open source alternative to Slack?
We used a self-hosted version of RocketChat at my previous employer's.

plastic_bag··on Ask HN: Is Reddit imposing rate limits too?
Yep. I can no longer access Libreddit from any instance. But teddit[0] still seems to be working.

plastic_bag··on Ask HN: Is Reddit imposing rate limits too?
It's happening on Libreddit too. Been getting the "Too Many Requests" error for the past couple of days. But a quick refresh fixes it for me.

plastic_bag··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Thank you for sharing this. Although I have a similar setup with NextDNS and ActivityWatch, it does not give me the same level flexibility like your project does. I'll be sure to check it out when I switch to PiHole.
plastic_bag··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
As someone who is struggling with procrastination, I'd love to know more about how it works and how it helped you overcome the bad habits.
plastic_bag··on Google adds a tag to identify Asian-owned businesses in Search and Maps
> Google is doing this to stand in support against violent acts that have targeted the Asian community, and COVID-related business closures over the last couple of years.

Doesn't labelling businesses as Asian-owned make it easier for the attackers to target them in the future?

plastic_bag··on My recommended Firefox addons for 2022
It will also slow down a lot of websites and cause them to stutter and drop frames. This behaviour is the most evident on Netflix.
plastic_bag··on I Am Seriously Considering Going Back to Desktop Computers (2020)
I tried this and it made me more productive than using a laptop from work.

I built a PC during the pandemic for work and gaming. It runs OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and Windows 10 (the latter purely for gaming but I'm looking to ditch it for Proton/Wine on Linux).

I realized how much I prefer working on a desktop after years of using a laptop for work. Not gonna lie, I still like the niceties offered by my Macbook Air M1, namely great battery life and very good performance, so I use it primarily when I am out working remotely.

plastic_bag··on Ask HN: How do you handle stale data when using React and REST APIs
You can use either SWR[0] or React Query[1] hooks to write a query to fetch data for the first component and whenever you make a post request from the second component, you call the mutation function to revalidate the first component's data and replace it.

plastic_bag··on YouTube blocks WION for reporting Russian statement
I do not support banning things but Zee Media, who owns WION, is known for extortion, spreading fake news and right wing propaganda in India.
plastic_bag··on Ask HN: What are your biggest goals for 2022?
1. Learn discrete math for CS 2. Get good at Algorithms and Data Structures.

I'm a self taught programmer. My theme for this year is to educate myself on CS topics and fundamentals.

plastic_bag··on Tell HN: Trying to learn from SICP makes me cry
I'm in the same boat as you but I work on web development instead of iOS.

I do not have a CS degree but I do have an engineering background. When I started reading SICP a few months ago, it felt refreshing. But I slowly lost interest as I progressed, for two reasons.

1) I had trouble understanding some math concepts mentioned in the book.

2) The exercises were getting difficult and I felt demotivated for not being able to take some extra time to solve them (I already have a regular day job).

I realised I had to get better at math first before learning more CS stuff.

So, now I'm learning discrete math for CS from MIT's 6.042J. I'm enjoying it so far.

Wasn't it owned by Internet Computer Bureau (ICB)?

Regardless, the British government profited off of the .io domain while it rightfully belonged to the Chagossians of British Indian Ocean Territory.

plastic_bag··on Ask HN: How do you take notes throughout your work day?
Same. Been using Obsidian for a year now and it's been great so far. I use obsidian-git plugin to backup my notes to a private git repository and for syncing notes.

Obsidian's community plugins are awesome!
