plastic_bag··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
Not true. DND works great in India. You can also report a spam call or an SMS and your mobile network provider has to provide a resolution. They usually do it by banning that abusing number.

DND is available both on Android and iOS.

> I believe Chinese has two flavors, "zanmen" including the listener too, and "women" excluding the listener.

So does Telugu.

మనము (manamu) - including the listener మేము (memu) - excluding the listener

I'm pretty sure most other Asian languages have them too.

plastic_bag··on Google restricting Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers for using OpenClaw
I'd rather use Chinese models like Kimi K2.5 or Minimax M2.5 for personal agents at this point. They are almost as smart but 10x cheaper and their attitude towards subscribers is use where you want.

Perfect! That's exactly what I'm looking for. I'll give it a try and report back :)
plastic_bag··on Launch HN: Trigger.dev (YC W23) – Open-source platform to build reliable AI apps
I'm very interested in trying this out for my side project. I'm using Vercel's AI SDK to generate content and images to create PDFs but getting it to output both images and text in the same generateObject call feels almost impossible.

Is it something that Trigger can do?

> If pollution is caused by "crop burning", why is it that the worst pollution is in cities?

The worst pollution is not in any cities. It's a problem specific to North Indian cities and regions in Pakistan.

No city in South India is even remotely as polluted as the NCR.

plastic_bag··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
Not the OP, but Stripe disabled verification and payments for new accounts in India. The only way to receive international payments is through an MoR like Lemon Squeezy or Paddle. PayPal should work too but my experience with it is limited.

> Also, lots of Mid East or central Asia town names end with -abad

This is also the case in South Asia, especially in areas that were once ruled by Islamic monarchies.

plastic_bag··on Notes on Tajikistan
I visited Tajikistan last summer and spent about three weeks in the country. One week in Khujand (I crossed the border from Uzbekistan) and Dushanbe, and two weeks in the Pamirs.

Just like the author I (from India) travelled with a couple of Europeans, a German girl and a French guy. I very much enjoyed my time there, especially in the Pamirs. I stayed with a local family who hosted me in Khorog. I went hiking, watched Afghan villages from across the border, and also worked remotely.

> Is it mainly to avoid being identified as torrenting by authorities? So if i live in a torrent friendly country it doesn't matter?

It's not just that. Streaming from an proper server always beats streaming from P2P connections. The former is much faster to stream, forward, and rewind, making the whole streaming experience better. Especially when watching 4K content or old movies with relatively less number of seeders.

> That's still YIFY-quality video, which is a few steps below HBO/MAX, which happens to be among the lowest quality paid streams.

You don't necessarily have to pick YIFY.

Qxr's uploads are a much better comparison. x265 encoded 1080p (with 5 - 6.5Mbps bitrate) from the highest quality sources and they look very good even on 55" 4K panels.

plastic_bag··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Not the original poster, but I visited Almaty and Shymkent in Kazakhstan this summer. I met a lot of nice and warm Kazakh people. Would love to visit Almaty again and explore other parts of the country this time.
plastic_bag··on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year
Google Messages app sends a lot of spam here in India if RCS is enabled. I confirmed this with some of friends who experienced the same thing.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has an app called DND which lets you register your phone number to opt out of marketing and promotional SMSes. It works really well and in case someone sends you a promotional SMS despite opting out, you can report them to your SIM provider (or carrier) and they are legally required to take an action.

But as soon as RCS is enabled, you will magically start receiving a lot of spam messages with rich text and link previews. Unfortunately, the DND app cannot see or detect those messages which means you cannot report them.

plastic_bag··on YouTube is blocking its Home screen if Watch History is Turned Off
Well, I explicitly hide YouTube's recommendations and feed. So, this is good news for me.
plastic_bag··on GNOME plans to phase out X11 for a Wayland-only future
I recently installed Fedora 38 on my desktop after years of using Opensuse Tumbleweed. It came with Wayland out of the box and that was my first time using Wayland.

After the switch, the major issue that I noticed was typing when searching for files in VSCode was very slow. Like a solid 1 or 2 seconds slow for the characters at the end to appear or to disappear after pressing backspace. The title of the window kept flickering as well as switching between the currently open filename and the folder name. It was very weird.

Some amount of Googling lead me to a couple of issues on VSCode's GitHub that attributed the root cause to either Electron or Nvidia misbehaving with Wayland.

Switching from Wayland to X11 solved the issue for me.

plastic_bag··on Show HN: Speech Meter – Improve Your English Pronunciation
I like this! I am surprised to find out my accent heavily leans towards the US's despite me being an Indian. Then again I grew up watching a lot of American movies, it's not really a surprise.

My experience with Rails has been productive so far. I'm very close to shipping something, thanks to Rails.
