plasma_beam··on CVE Foundation Launched to Secure the Future of the CVE Program
It hasn't posted to FPDS yet:https://www.fpds.gov/ezsearch/fpdsportal?q=PIID%3A%2270RCSJ2...

Assuming this is the correct contract, which it appears to be, it had an option period starting today through March of next year. DHS just needed to exercise the option.

plasma_beam··on You might not need WebSockets
You butter bread before it’s toasted? My mind is honestly blown (as I move to kitchen to try this).
plasma_beam··on Pentagon to terminate $5.1B in IT contracts with Accenture, Deloitte
I disagree - no one is calling large scale gov contractors such as Northrop Grumman, GDIT, CGI, CACI, many more etc. consultants - yet a lot of the IT work they do overlaps with the consultancies.

“Contractors” has become the more common term over time.

plasma_beam··on The Mystery of ICE's Unidentifiable Arrests
This is a common sentiment..and was quite prevalent especially in the whole ‘abolish ICE’ movement. But I always fail to see in these arguments the explicit distinction between the two divisions of ICE - ERO (enforcement and removal operations) and HSI (homeland security investigations). It’s like grouping together the beat cops and the detectives - they work in the same precinct, but vastly different jobs. HSI also houses other programs like SEVIS, which admittedly has lots of its own issues, but manages all foreign students in the US and interfaces with universities for reporting purposes.

Now HSI is undoubtedly informing some of the immigrant raids, and the leadership of ICE is now clearly oriented to the right, but there are some what I’d call non-partisan things the agency is doing that we don’t want abolished.

Not picking on you at all, I just wish more of these arguments dove a little deeper into all that ICE does.

plasma_beam··on DJ With Apple Music launches to enable subscribers to mix their own sets
Question is can I access MY library and playlists synched to Apple Music with this? I don’t care about being able to access the Apple Music library.
plasma_beam··on Ask HN: What do you use to create diagrams?
Powerpoint is also my go to. It just feels more natural and I prefer editing locally, not in web browser.
plasma_beam··on Age Verification Laws: A Backdoor to Surveillance
Am I missing something here? Entirely possible and likely. When I go to pornhub I have to click a button that days I’m 18. Some other sites I’ve seen actually make me enter a birthdate. Slightly more annoying but I always make one up. Is this what people are upset about? I get actual age verification with an account required or checking my ID is more invasive..but I guess I’ve not experienced this as an actual problem yet.
plasma_beam··on MongoDB acquires Voyage AI
I have not watched that video since 2013 (wow!) and it is still hilarious.
plasma_beam··on Digital Services Playbook
That’d be something for sure. Section 508 accessibility laws are built into most federal IT contracts. DHS has an entire trusted tester certification program around it. The changes required to existing federal contracts if they do this are staggering.

plasma_beam··on Why can't we remember our lives as babies or toddlers?
I am mid-40s and have several distinct memories from 2.
plasma_beam··on Macrodata Refinement
Yes. Best vampire show ever!
plasma_beam··on Macrodata Refinement
Absolutely agree and surprised it’s not getting mentioned in this thread with all the complaints about Lost. Most people don’t realize Lindelof did learn a lesson with Lost and corrected it with The Leftovers. One of the most under appreciated and amazing shows ever.
plasma_beam··on What makes a great mocktail? (2018)
I highly recommend trying to make some homemade ginger beer. It’s super easy, takes just a few days to ferment, lots of recipes online. Much better than the stuff in the store which is filled with added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Plus you can brew with extra ginger if you like it strong. Whatever you do, don’t ferment it in glass bottles. Use 2 liter plastic soda bottles.

plasma_beam··on A Santa Cruz surfer rode potential world-record 108-foot-tall Mavericks wave
I don’t live in California but was visiting Half Moon Bay over the summer, and was really excited to go by Mavericks, despite it being in the summer a tranquil location with none of these giant waves. We then walked the ocean cliff trail at nearby Devil’s Slide Trail and saw whales for the first time in our lives. Multiple whales surfacing in the same area for eternity it seemed. We gave up and kept walking, and saw more whales a half mile away! Walked back and then again saw the original group still surfacing in the same spot! Amazing nature in that area. Spoke with our friend that lives 30 mins away and they’d never seen a whale there.

There was also a fatal accident that day that shut down part of highway 1 nearby, which I’ve read is not that uncommon.

plasma_beam··on Software developer arrested in connection with murder of healthcare executive
If I am the employee, I don’t want my employer to think I’m flirting with customers when it’s just small talk. And..uhh..if I’m married, etc. Anyways, we don’t know for sure either way
plasma_beam··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
I agree. The media seemed to have jumped on the flirting angle because he was smiling. Isn’t that a little insulting to the hostel employee? I smiled at my barber today. Definitely wasn’t flirting.
plasma_beam··on Choosing solitude
Au contraire, I get Columbus day off work. None of my kids are off school :) I’ve been looking forward to this coming Monday for months. Those brief periods of solitude must be taken advantage of with kids.
plasma_beam··on Kudzu, the vine that never ate the South (2015)
It wraps all around trees and other desirable plants, and has shoots under ground that can extend many feet away. Digging it up is the only solution but even that is exceedingly difficult. I’ve learned to live with it.
plasma_beam··on How We Found Bin Laden: The Basics of Foreign Signals Intelligence
Maryland.
plasma_beam··on Things to know about the Great Wave
Even dumber, I never noticed Mt. Fuji was in the pic, focus was truly on the wave.
plasma_beam··on The guidance system and computer of the Minuteman III nuclear missile
Given we are talking about nuclear missiles, I’d like to think that while unmanned and housing decades-old tech, that the sites themselves have state of the art top secret levels of security. Then again I grew up in northern VA and we all used to assume as kids that the pentagon had missiles to protect from attack, then 9/11 happens, things like Jan 6, and you lose that confidence..
plasma_beam··on The introverts are winning
Amen. Thank you. Not sure if the author intended to sound so crass, but I shared your immediate reaction to those two sentences.
plasma_beam··on An Interview with Lola De La Mata about tinnitus
22 years ago I permanently damaged my left ear at a beach concert on Tortola, British Virgin Islands. I was young, drinking in the sun, and standing far too close to a concert speaker stack that was turned up way too loud. The damage started off as pain - felt like water was stuck in my ear for weeks. It's still noticeable 22 years later. I'll always regret that moment, but have come to accept it. Your ears are so fragile.
plasma_beam··on Possible association between tattoos and lymphoma
If the correlation is proven true then that’s obviously terrible, but I’m in my mid 40s now, tattoo-less, and one of my biggest regrets is not getting a couple tattoos when I was younger. I feel like doing it now looks like a midlife crisis type thing. I always wanted one of those Thai tattoos where they manually tap tap tap the design into your skin with a mallet.
plasma_beam··on Dehydration associated with poorer performance on attention tasks among adults
I’d debate you on 5. That may be more embarrassing.
plasma_beam··on Dehydration associated with poorer performance on attention tasks among adults
On the flip side, when you get up and go off camera or turn camera off in a small video call (few participants), it feels awkward to get up and leave and I usually hold it and suffer through it. In person for some reason it felt less awkward to excuse yourself for a few minutes.

Not to mention I always leave the airpods in when I go now and have to triple check I’m on mute :)

plasma_beam··on Can Weed Improve a Workout?
I don’t know about it being performance enhancing. However, being high for strenuous workout or weightlifting is enjoyable. Yardwork as well. Zone out, put the headphones on and get some hard work done where you don’t have to think too hard.
plasma_beam··on NIST: Personal Identity Verification (PIV) of Federal Employees and Contractors
I’m a contractor for DHS and heard a rumor a long time ago that you could get special treatment with TSA agents when using your DHS badge as identification. Yeah no. Doesn’t work :) Southwest did give me a free drink one time though and thanked me for my service - they saw the laptop and piv plugged in while I was working on the plane and thought I was military. I did correct them but also took the free drink.
plasma_beam··on A ‘double brood’ of periodical cicadas will emerge in 2024
The massive DC/MD/VA ones are the 17 year Brood X and came out in 2021.
