pkamb··on Suitcase: A macOS tool for deploying GUIs for simple commands and scripts
macOS Quick Actions (formerly called Services) are great, but I've always found them very cumbersome to use due to being relegated to the submenu. And having no icons, and a severe lack of customization and control over their order.

I recently released an indie Mac app to bring your Applications and Scripts to the top of the Finder right-click menu, customized exactly how you like.

https://servicestation.menu/

It's on the Mac App Store and uses the modern Finder Extension API, so safe to install and no Finder haxies.

pkamb··on GitQlient – a multi-platform GUI-oriented Git client written with Qt
Can this stage individual lines, and then display a view of only staged lines and no un-staged lines? AKA only the things you are about to commit.

In SourceTree this is called "split view staging" and I find it indispensable. But SourceTree is so old as slow and unsupported that I'm desperately trying to find an alternative. Most of the existing GUI clients don't have this option.

pkamb··on GitHub is now free for teams
I went to go downgrade to the free plan and noticed that GitHub Pages static sites served from Private repos still require payment. That will keep me on $4/month for now.
pkamb··on GitHub is now free for teams
Does “for teams” also apply to paid personal accounts?
pkamb··on Don't Make Students Use Eclipse
I gave up Java immediately after that class!

"public static void main string bracket bracket args"

"public static void main string bracket bracket args"

"public static void main string bracket bracket args"

kind of sad that my first exposure to programming of any kind at University was just repeating that mantra.

pkamb··on Show HN: Indie Mac app for customizing your right-click menu
The Finder Locations picker is currently really only used to grant a Sandbox bookmark to those paths. Any child path/file you right-click will then have permission to actually be opened by Service Station.

I was under the impression that external volumes would not work with the Finder Extension API that Service Station uses, but looking again there may be a way. I'll add that in one of the next updates. Thanks for trying it out!

pkamb··on Show HN: Indie Mac app for customizing your right-click menu
The free version is fully featured but has 2 limits:

- 4 Rules (targeted file types, etc.)

- 3 total Menu Items (Apps or Scripts) in any given Menu

Any additional menu items you set up will be grayed out.

The free version also inserts the "Service Station" menu item at the bottom if there are other active menu items.

pkamb··on Show HN: Indie Mac app for customizing your right-click menu
This is Service Station, my new Mac app launching today.

It's a modern macOS Finder Extension that lets you customize the Finder's right-click menu. On the Mac App Store.

Add your favorite applications for any file type. Or run scripts directly from Finder.

'Open Terminal from Finder' being one of its best features. Just right-click the background of any Finder window.

Excited to see how people use Service Station to customize their Mac! Let me know if any questions.

pkamb··on The iOS and Mac markets are almost the same size?

I read the same thing. Specifically due to the "Ask stupid questions get stupid answers" saying, I think.

> I use it to follow people

This is something I have a real need for. Specifically, podcast hosts. I want to follow certain hosts and listen to every random show they're on.

Some hosts do keep lists of their appearances across many shows: http://hypercritical.co/about/appearances/

But that forces me to manually find the episodes and add each one to my podcast app.

I want something that aggregates appearances into a cross-podcast RSS feed that I can subscribe to in my app. Automatically subscribe to every one of their appearances.

pkamb··on Amazon has 150M Prime members
I wish the Prime Video streaming app was better.

Absolutely unusable on an Apple TV. Cross-platform trash that behaves so poorly compared to native UX.

The official Twitch app is the same. And they shut down API access for a number of high quality 3rd party Apple TV apps for Twitch when they launched the official one.

pkamb··on Show HN: I built a website to better compare USB-C hubs found on Amazon
+1 for a filter for units with a removable cord to the computer. I want all this junk mounted out of the way, not 3 inches from the computer.
pkamb··on Show HN: I built a website to better compare USB-C hubs found on Amazon
Are any of these products actual one-to-many USB-C hubs?

You know, a hub. Which seemingly do not exist for USB-C / USB 3.

pkamb··on 28-Key Mechanical Keyboard

pkamb··on Don't just roll the dice – Software pricing guide (2012) [pdf]
I built a small utility as well, and I'm using a somewhat unique payment model.

It's free and open-source on GitHub. You can download the source code and build it yourself with Xcode.

https://github.com/pkamb/powerkey

I also provide a $5 built app available to purchase via Gumroad, code-signed with my Apple developer account and ready for immediate use without Xcode with no scary macOS warnings:

https://gumroad.com/l/powerkey

I found that this model works really well for small projects where you want some of the benefits of open source and don't want to deal with upgrades or nag screens.

It would be even better if GitHub built some "paid release" features into their product, in addition to their Patreon-style Sponsors feature.

The new Seattle waterfront sidewalks have a similar inlayed motif of large purple glass tiles. Was cool to notice the design inspiration.

You think the Roku version of MLB is significantly better than, say, the Apple TV version of MLB? Why?
pkamb··on Over 100 PBS local stations start streaming on YouTube TV
Hmm, I never actually signed up. It works without sign-in.

The commercials aren't great. I wish I could pay to have it cut to the (cool!) Pluto.tv splash screens rather than see ads.

pkamb··on Over 100 PBS local stations start streaming on YouTube TV
Two Apple TV apps I have recently discovered and love using:

Pluto.tv: replicate the cable guide experience. Endless episodes of things like This Old House, MST3k, and vintage game shows. I much prefer Pluto content to modern HGTV-type cable shows, and it scratches the same itch of "just watch whatever's on".

Kanopy: use your library card or university ID to stream indie movies and documentaries. Free kids programming. Lots of PBS.

pkamb··on Fight back against Google AMP (2018)
Reddit already has a fast, mobile-first site that looks almost exactly like the AMP site.

Why do they put up with AMP and all of its annoyances? On a site where half the appeal is in features such as upvoting that are incompatible with AMP!

It must be only for the supposed SEO benefits?
