pkamb··on I built a 5K iMac Display
Someone should release a "kit"... the new boards and power supply could even sit inside a nicely designed backpack enclosure on the stand.

Is there any possibility of accessing the needed display connectors via the RAM door or via a surgical cut in the back case? Removing the screen is what I don't want to do.

pkamb··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
The part that creeps me out the most is WhatsApp’s aggressiveness towards getting your Contacts. Other apps want them but WhatsApp hardly works without the permission.

Why hasn’t Apple introduced a private/segmented Contacts permission like they have Photos, Location, etc.?

pkamb··on Show HN: Sqwok – A low-cruft, minimalist alternative to Reddit and Twitter
Hopefully you don't need to implement anything... just allow the browser to go Back, then don't refresh the topic list page at all when I land.
pkamb··on Show HN: Sqwok – A low-cruft, minimalist alternative to Reddit and Twitter
I'm using the native swipe-back gesture on my phone, not the back button in the top left (which I don't really even think you need).
pkamb··on Show HN: Sqwok – A low-cruft, minimalist alternative to Reddit and Twitter
I really hate how there's lag when going "Back" from an article to the topic list (iOS, Safari). It resets the scroll position too, to the wrong spot.

This is a major issue on Reddit too... a huge lag when going Back.

I like that Sqwok looks HN/old.Reddit but with bigger mobile-sized tap targets and fonts. It feels like it works well in a browser. But the back experience kind of ruins the fluid UX.

pkamb··on Farewell, Periscope
I strangely have always read it as some designed-in-SF "Fleet Week" reference. Only after reading your post did I make the "fleeting" connection to gone-after-24-hours Stories.
pkamb··on Farewell, Periscope
why not use the Periscope brand as their Stories feature? Instead they use something new called Fleets?
pkamb··on Etsy was a twee culture punchline, now it’s a Wall Street darling
The only way to use Etsy is via the "Vintage" filter.

Which honestly works really well and is one of the most effective filters on the internet. I wish I could similarly filter eBay by "real/old/unique" items.

Or Google images by "real photos" vs. stock/professional photos.

pkamb··on How Microsoft crushed Slack
Teams is awful. Specifically the non-native notifications which have been complained about for 4 years with no action.

Fix that single item and I'd have a positive view of the product.

pkamb··on Show HN: Podcast API
I'd like to see a crowdsourced "Genius for Podcasts".

Most podcast producers are terrible about correctly adding metadata: Chapters, images, episode notes, descriptions, etc.

Let the superfans upload custom metadata to be displayed alongside the episode as it's playing in your podcast player.

pkamb··on macOS Big Sur
Even when you have a lot of Chrome tabs open, you still mostly always see the favicon.

When it stop showing the favicons, that's when you really know you have too many tabs open.

It's a bit of a feature, really. The tabs are still completely usable, but not seeing the favicons was just annoying enough that it changed my behavior and would cause me to finally close a bunch of my open tabs.

pkamb··on macOS Big Sur
You can still only open about 15 tabs, after which the Safari tab bar turns into a completely unusable horizontally-scrolling list.

Chrome solved this a decade ago... just keep shrinking the tabs down to Favicon size or smaller. Safari just added Favicon images last year, and I don't even think they're visible by default.

---

EDIT: Favicon-only compact tabs to have actually been changed/added in Safari 14 for Big Sur!? Which would actually probably push me to switch (and upgrade to Big Sur, even).

I remember caring about that as well back when Chrome was released, but since then have adapted to the Chrome style. For me it's a minor preference vs. the horizontal scrolling issue.

> I host everything on a private media-sharing website that only my family can access, and it costs less than $1 per month to keep it running.

I don't know if the author uses an iPhone, but I have personally enjoyed scanning old photo/video and then uploading it into my iCloud Photos account.

If you edit the metadata the media shows up correctly in-place early on your chronological timeline. You can tag the location, and easily share.

This has been the key to my photos archiving enjoyment. Get old digital camera pics off of old hard drives and servers and into the same private memories timeline that your smartphone uses.

pkamb··on When you tell Chrome to wipe private data it spares Google.com and YouTube
I love Chrome's tabs and have yet to find a browser that compares.

> must perform with >50 tabs open

Testing Firefox now, it has the same behavior as Safari: when I open 16 tabs it starts a horizontal scrolling list. Absolutely unusable. Chrome shrinks every tab down to Favicon size or smaller and shows you 50+ tabs at once.

Chrome got tabs right a decade ago and has yet to mess them up, as they have with most of the rest of the browser. Very hard to switch until they do.

Dealing with this now with SourceTree. Development is completely dead.

I don't want to use a new tool. I just want to fix a couple bugs. I'd do it myself if the application were open source...

pkamb··on PS5 Teardown [video]
I was impressed by the toy-looking screwdriver he used to removed that screw — the design and placement of which looks like is meant to be turned with a coin such as an American quarter.

pkamb··on Fortunately, I don't squash my commits
An easy way to do this is to perform a 'mixed reset' from the tip of your branch back to the mainline commit where you started work. (Use a new branch, so that your original branch "backs up" the work.)

This will leave all of the final changes in the index, "squashing" any churn. From there, individually stage lines/chunks into a small handful of atomic commits for the PR.

pkamb··on All DuckDuckGo bang operators on one page
That's a good example where I get zero results if I misspell the search term:

https://scryfall.com/search?q=black%20lotuss

Whereas I Google or Duck for "mtg black lotuss" I'll almost certainly get the correct results. I feel like I'd just get frustrated with the much worse text parsing of each site's search field.

Although it is interesting that this "Scryfall" site that owns "!mtg" isn't on the first SERP for Google or DDG.

pkamb··on All DuckDuckGo bang operators on one page
So these all just directly search for that term on the (usually substandard) internal website search box?

I don't get the appeal. I want the bang to show a good/filtered SERP, not load some other site directly. (similar to a `site:x` search on Google I guess.)

What I'd really like to use is a search engine that had custom ranking of domains. I'd heavily weigh it to only show Stack Exchange, Reddit, and forum posts.

Or a `!discussions` bang operator that filtered DDG results into that set.
