pkaler··on Ask HN: Is the job market brutal? or is it just me?
> Is the coding question that is representative of the work you do at your company, and that you expect candidates to have done?

The solution is a while-loop with a couple of if-statements. I would hope an engineer would write code like this many times per day. Whenever they need to marshal a blob from A to B.

> It also can feel just a tad insulting to be drilled on CompSci 101 questions.

I wish I had this problem! In these rare cases, I just say, "Great job! This was to just double-check you could write code. You'd be surprised how often a candidate isn't able to solve this! Let's talk about your career. In what aspects would you like to grow next?"

pkaler··on Ask HN: Is the job market brutal? or is it just me?
Hiring manager here with open REQs. I've been doing multiple phone screens daily, and it's been brutal on my end, too.

I structure the hour-long phone screen to be 1/3 coding, 1/3 behavioural questions, and 1/3 career growth and questions for me.

We rarely get out of the coding question block. It's a fairly simple question that ChatGPT solves easily. The tightest solution is about 10 lines of code. It can be answered either with iterative, recursive, or functional code. There is a general case, an empty case, and an exceptional case. It's the type of code I was able to write after completing CMPT 101. I had to change the question since it was so easily solvable by ChatGPT.

Engineers with years of experience at FAANG and similar companies cannot solve this straightforward problem. It's like, what have you been doing with your life? Did everyone do nothing during ZIRPy times and have accumulated years of rust that they now need to shake off?

pkaler··on Tell HN: Beware 'Ungrowth' in Your Job
This is an interesting topic. I suspect you are being vague for privacy. But is it possible to get some more context?

What do you think your strengths are? Which strengths does the manager want you to grow?

pkaler··on Apple’s ad business set to boom on the back of its own anti-tracking crackdown
> I'm not familiar -- do you have to actively consent to Apple's tracking too?

It's called App Tracking Transparency and there is a scary prompt when Facebook/others do it. It's called Personalization and a friendly prompt when Apple does it.

pkaler··on Montreal is what North America could be
I've been to Montreal a few times and live in Vancouver.

The missing middle of housing is what Vancouver could take from Montreal as the article states. The other thing it could take is the events (F1, ComedyFest, JazzFest, etc)

Skytrain, buses, and YVR are much better compared to Montreal.

It's a tossup as to which city is more corrupt with government-granted oligopolies and rent-seeking.

pkaler··on Apple is building a demand-side platform
This is an excellent 3-part series on Apple, ATT, and how they robbed the ad mob:

Also the job posting for Senior Manager for DSP (Demand-Side Platform) was probably supposed to be Antonio Garica Martinez before he got hired/fired/offer rescinded.

pkaler··on We need a middle class for startups
>> Totally agree with this article. It's not just about funding methods, but also playbooks for these types of businesses, and best practices.

I think the word you are looking for is called "business". There are tons of books for these types of businesses.

On the shelf behind me is E-Myth Mastery, 22 Immutable Laws of Branding, Traction by Gino Wickman. You just have to look outside of tech. All of these books and practices apply to software businesses.

pkaler··on Amazon abruptly fires senior managers tied to unionized warehouse
Isn't this a good thing? If the workers were fed up enough with conditions that they formed a union, doesn't that imply the managers were terrible? Shouldn't terrible managers be fired?

For example, my wife is a unionized nurse. The best thing that could happen at her work is for her manager to be fired. The union has no power in that.

I'm an engineering manager at a software company. I get performance reviews twice per year. It's well understood that if I'm doing a terrible job that I will be fired.

pkaler··on Shopify to Acquire Delivrr for $2.1B
>> So I get notified of every order that accidentally used my email address (common Indian name @ gmail.com).

Someone needs to solve the (common Indian name @ gmail.com) problem. Preferably, Google/Gmail would solve this. But my email gets signed up on a daily basis to new services.

pkaler··on Ask HN: Why do new browsers use Chromium instead of Firefox as their base?
Chromium embeds the Blink browser engine which is a fork of WebKit which is a fork of KHTML.

You can read Creative Selection by Ken Kocienda to get the backstory on why they chose KHTML over Gecko. You can also Google for podcasts that Don Melton has been on.

pkaler··on Over 200 newspapers now involved in lawsuits vs. Google, Facebook
> Can the NYTimes or WSJ even think about covering local issues?

Yes.

The NYTimes has a Canadian desk. Eventually they'll have a Vancouver desk. Eventually they'll have an East Van desk. Eventually they'll have a Main St desk.

pkaler··on My friends Instagram was hacked and deep-fake videos posted in less than 6 hours
I've had my account hacked, too. I used to own: https://www.instagram.com/kaler/

Have owned it since Instagram launched and it was connected to my Facebook account which I've had since 2005 or so.

There is no hope with contacting Instagram/Facebook support.

pkaler··on Stop paying DocuSign $2 for an e-signature
This looks like a Painted Door Test where the creator is testing the value proposition and the pricing.

I suspect the next iteration of the product/company will have a different brand name.

pkaler··on Helion
Looks like Helion has a long-term target of 1¢/kwh.

Conveniently, BCHydro just emailed me my bill this morning. They charge $0.2077/day. Then $0.0939/kWh for the first 688kWh and then $0.1408/kWh after that.

It looks like Helion is targeting to be somewhere between 10x to 15x cheaper than hydro-electricity.

pkaler··on Ask HN: Senior Software Engineer to Engineering Manager
It depends. The main lever is where you will find a great mentor. Here are a few points you should think about:

1) Sponsorship/Mentorship. Will your current manager or another manager in the company champion your transition to a manager? Becoming a manager requires a lot of mentorship and coaching. Does HR at your company provide support? Is there a Senior Manager or Director that will mentor you?

2) Levelling. Does your company have a career ladder? Are there Staff Engineer levels? Have you reached this level as an IC? I personally would not sponsor an IC to become a manager if they haven't reached the Staff level. Staff Engineer is a sideways promotion to Manager. Senior Staff Engineer is sideways to Senior Manager.

3) Switching Companies. You should apply for a Staff Engineer position at a new company. During the interview process make it clear that you want to transition to a manager. During the negotiation phase, build a 6 month transition plan with the hiring manager.

4) Read. Read a lot. You should read all of the canonical management books.

pkaler··on Facebook Banned Our SaaS Website
There was a similar ML bug on Instagram last year.

I had a 5-letter username that hackers would constantly try to take. They somewhat succeeded this summer by having my account deactivated. There is no real recourse on my end since Instagram/Facebook doesn't have customer support.

My real fear is that someone will try to impersonate me in the future.

pkaler··on What is expected of a engineering manager?
I would recommend that you read a book a week, every week, for the rest of your life. :)

Just start with the ones in the article and Amazon/Kindle will get good at recommending books.

Here's some books recently read on my Kindle:

  - No Rules Rules
  - Never Split The Difference
  - The Manager's Path
  - The Almanack of Naval Ravikant
  - Ultralearning
  - The Hard Thing About Hard Things
  - What You Do is Who You Are
  - User Story Mapping
  - Inspired
  - The Lean Product Playbook
  - Competing Against Luck
  - Domain Driven Design
  - Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture
  - Data-Driven Marketing
  - Designing Data-Intensive Applications
  - Monetizing Innovation
  - Super Thinking
  - The Great Mental Models
  - Nonviolent Communication
  - High Growth Handbook
  - Powerful
  - Trillion Dollar Coach
pkaler··on What is expected of a engineering manager?
I recommend all of the books referenced in the original post. They are all very good. But the expectation of an engineering manager is fairly simple:

Do whatever it takes.

Way back in February or March, when we were still working from the office, I walked to the drug store on the corner and got Lysol wipes and hand sanitizer for everyone. Because, do whatever it takes.

pkaler··on Google Services Experiencing Disruptions
Google search is up. Google Mail, Calendar, Docs seem to be down.

(This is probably a testament to who pays the bills.)

pkaler··on App stores, trust and anti-trust
This is a whole lot of words that doesn't clearly convey the core point: Apple App Store payments should compete on technical/business merits and not be mandatory based upon contractual obligations.
pkaler··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2020)
Earnin | Senior Android Engineer | Full-time | Vancouver, Palo Alto

Earnin is building a financial system that works to enable people, not profits. We’re fed up by the fact that $1 trillion is held up in the pay cycle every year, causing American workers to pay over $100 billion in fees and interest.

I'm the Engineering Manager hiring for this role. You'll be working closely with iOS and backend engineers, data science, designers, and product managers. We are mobile-only. Our Android App is up to +60% Kotlin and most new code is written in Kotlin.

We are looking for:

  • 5+ years Android experience
  • 2+ years Kotlin experience (I know this is rare, but generally we're looking for a strong Kotlin programmer)
  • Strong knowledge of Android Architecture Components, MVVM, etc
  • Strong knowledge of Android Studio and other profiling and debugging tools

pkaler··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
Former game developer here. Game studios don't need unions, they need better management. Basically, an 18-year-old QA tester gets promoted to lead QA then associate producer then assistant producer and then producer. The producer manages by industry lore. And industry lore is terrible.

Unionization is not going to fix the management training problem.

pkaler··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2020)
Earnin | Android & iOS Engineers | Vancouver, BC | https://www.earnin.com/careers/

Earnin is building a financial system that works for people. There are 80 million Americans that live paycheck to paycheck and the financial system is intrinsically unfair to them. US banks collect about $30 billion of overdraft fees each year. Our core Cashout product solves this issue. We have also built Health Aid, a product that helps negotiate down our Community Members' medical bills.

The team in Vancouver is 20 strong. And I would like to humbly put forth that we've built the strongest mobile team in the city. Join us!

pkaler··on Walking Away from the Product I Spent a Year Building
I've been listening to The Art of Product podcast since the start and Level really didn't make sense to me as a solution even though I understood the problem.

Most issues are around context and focus when moving from an individual contributor to a lead. If a programmer I'm leading doesn't implement a feature in a way that I expect it is because the context that is in my brain hasn't been transferred to the programmer's brain. If a feature isn't being worked on then I having communicated focus and priority.

A solution would focus on revealing context and focus by:

1) Deeply integrating with Slack, JIRA, Github, etc. The tools that we already use. A new product can't be a silo.

2) Mobile or GTFO. Leads are in meetings, on airplanes, in transit, etc.

pkaler··on Show HN: Kanye.rest – A Free REST API for Random Kanye West Quotes
I fire up either Kanye West or Jay-Z whenever I have that feeling in the pit of my stomach before doing a difficult thing. Sometimes you just need a little bit of brazen, bombast to get started.

pkaler··on America’s Professional Elite: Wealthy, Successful and Miserable
>> He had received an offer at a start-up, and he would have loved to take it, but it paid half as much, and he felt locked into a lifestyle that made this pay cut impossible. “My wife laughed when I told her about it,” he said.

Sounds like it's the wife that he needs to cut. Or he needs to do a better job of communicating his happiness to her. This is the type of marriage that ends up in divorce.

I just finished re-reading Drive by Daniel Pink. My book notes here: https://parveenkaler.com/posts/drive-daniel-pink

Using Daniel Pink's model, the characters in this story seem to be lacking 1) Mastery 2) Autonomy 3) Purpose in their work.

pkaler··on [dead]
>> He argues that eliminating the power of the super-rich would created would lead to America that was "the country we think we live in but don't.

A transfer of wealth from billionaires to the government is a transfer of power from one overlord to another. Different overlord. Same problems.

pkaler··on Whole-body cryotherapy as adjunct treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders
I started cryotherapy last year. I went every day for 30 days. I know go about once a week. I'm headed to hot yoga followed by cryotherapy for the extra shocking effect.

Anecdotally, I find it helps me recover from training. This is probably too much information, but I find it is excellent for the gentlemanly bits down under.

I'm 39. Give me more of anything that makes me feel 19 again.

pkaler··on Patrick Collison on Innovation and Scientific Progress [audio]
Sadly, Patrick Collison had no experience in payments before starting Stripe.
pkaler··on Patrick Collison on Innovation and Scientific Progress [audio]
The interesting part is not in the reading of the words but the understanding of the concepts.

I listened to this podcast and rarely read transcripts. When listening to podcasts, at least for me, the "umms" and "awws" allow me time to think about what is being said.

If you prefer reading. Read the article that the interview is based upon: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/11/diminish...
