pjjpo··on Why Japanese companies do so many different things
Not about the article but I have the exact opposite impression of HN treatment of Japan. It's largely expats complaining about living in Japan or Westerners comparing Japanese values to their own and always concluding the former is inferior, not just different. It feels like a modern form of imperialism to me. I'm surprised you get a positive impression (yes this particular article is an exception though).
pjjpo··on Japan’s robot wolf sells out as record bear attacks drive demand
Not just perhaps, this is the prevailing theory here.
pjjpo··on Getting arrested in Japan
Even if you actually rape someone, if you settle with the victim jb cash, the charges are dropped. Something that really needs to change but seems to not be going so well.

Not saying that's what happened in this case by any ways, just that dropped charges = innocent isn't true. And I agree with the OP that knowing the context would help sympathize, especially given usually someone innocent would share that more proactively. Instead, many are even assuming this is something about foreigners, with absolutely no basis to assume that...

pjjpo··on I Will Never Use AI to Code
> I actually like writing code. Why would I want to give up something I enjoy?

This line was good and lines up well with why I use minimal AI. But indeed the rest of the article shouldn't have really been needed then if this was the point.

pjjpo··on Pro-Iran crew turns DDoS into shakedown as Ubuntu.com stays down
Interesting - this was randomly in my feed but indeed today, I upgraded my server and didn't know at the time why all the apt requests were so slow. That being said, it sped up to full over time - I wonder if this is actually an effect of the DDoS or they added some infra to throttle at first and eventually determine if an IP is making valid requests.
pjjpo··on New US phone network for Christians to block porn and gender-related content
Wonder if anyone will sue when they end up on a pornographic Twitter or racy Instagram account, which presumably can't be blocked (hope they don't require installing a root cert...).
pjjpo··on The Zig project's rationale for their anti-AI contribution policy
I wonder - has it been confirmed that no LLMs for PRs literally means no AI assistance for code?

While I haven't codified it anywhere, the policy I would like is for issues and PR descriptions to have no LLMs - there is no reason to ban code completely though IMO. I would say that would be pro human-communication and a stance I would like a lot.

pjjpo··on WASM is not quite a stack machine
I have reread this several times but might be missing so I am begging the question, what exactly makes the LISP syntax sugar for something that isn't a stack machine? Or did I misread that?

If not, I think the OP is making the same point we all are, any program can be translated for execution on any machine - so bringing it up in the blog seems weak, which I agree with.

pjjpo··on WASM is not quite a stack machine
> Despite the name, register VMs also have a stack.

Out of curiosity what do you think about this - in spite of the name, stack machines also have yet another stack. Ok I don't like that wording, but locals are basically the stack frames people know of from their computer arch class I think.

It doesn't change the fact that Wasm operations have to have the execution stack as one or more of the operands. Seems like a stack machines to me too, though I don't know more details on why the specific design of Wasm would make optimizing compilers harder to write than JVM as the article suggests (I think?).

pjjpo··on Firefox Has Integrated Brave's Adblock Engine
Zen is great and still mostly Firefox. I use standard Firefox on Android and everything syncs without hassle. The experience is so much better that personally cannot imagine using Chromium anymore. Of course I do wonder if the entire Firefox ecosystem is sustainable long-term funding wise.
pjjpo··on Japan implements language proficiency requirements for certain visa applicants
Is it just me or is 1 year excessively short for qualifying for PR? I'm a bit unsurprised that it results in less leniency in applications, there are probably just too many applications because the thresholds have gone down (not saying salary education etc requirements are trivial, but a far cry from the old wait 10 years).
pjjpo··on Japan implements language proficiency requirements for certain visa applicants
Unlike banks, many services, some Rakuten subpages, etc requiring full width, I have found real estate sites (purchase, not rent) to be the most likely to accept half-width roman characters for the name input box.
pjjpo··on Japan implements language proficiency requirements for certain visa applicants
I don't know how verifiable it is, but the general narrative has been a lot is Chinese parking their money outside the reach of the CCP. I've never quite understood the mechanics of this though.
pjjpo··on ChatGPT Pro now starts at $100/month
Really great to see this whole thread after so many questioning looks from people on why I use codex instead of Claude which generally doesn't work for me.

I never thought it was about particular usefulness for low level vs high level but it tracks with my general low level work.

pjjpo··on Supply chain nightmare: How Rust will be attacked and what we can do to mitigate
On the bright side, the forking problem does seem to be getting some attention

https://github.com/golang/go/issues/74884

I haven't seen much improvement in off-happy-path tooling issues like that one to be too hopeful but at least it's not sklosed!

pjjpo··on John Deere to pay $99M in right-to-repair settlement
Sounds like a fun anecdote and not doubting it at all. So just wondering how that max comes into play

> Explain what you found. Where I am, the max resolution is $30k, so you could easily get a refund for the tractor.

While I haven't bought a tractor before from some searching and impression they seem much higher. If fair market value is that low, I can see how 1) works but if for 2 it caps out at $30K, it doesn't seem like it would get you a full replacement with another brand.

The loss to John Deere is funny but isn't it also a loss to the customer, who would hurt more from the lost tractor?

pjjpo··on A macOS bug that causes TCP networking to stop working after 49.7 days
Ouch - "every Mac" from the original post is a hallucination then.

I can live with the writing style when the topic is interesting (here it was for me) but complete untruths are much worse.

pjjpo··on Marc Andreessen is wrong about introspection
Both Andreeson and Elon knew exactly how to take advantage of the times to make money. Both are true "failed" billionaires, Netscape and "PayPal" as the examples. Latter in quotes since Musk didn't contribute much more than getting fired immediately.

So yes, you are the stupid, and the world has not gone towards better, or even different.

pjjpo··on Go on Embedded Systems and WebAssembly
Definitely don't recommend that since it works when it does and doesn't otherwise. Most users will not end up happy trying to make it work since the alternative is more common.

This isn't a fault of TinyGo itself, it is just targeting a space that doesn't really prioritize embedded but got picked up for that just because. But without fixing this Wasm ecosystem issue, compiling Go to Wasm will never be a real thing.

pjjpo··on Jack Dorsey says Block employees now bring prototypes, not slides, to meetings
I really agree with a lot of this but also think it may be hitting a bit too hard. It may be most applicable to engineer founders.

My anecdote is that, after a few stings with non-technical founders, a doc etc will not improve the chances to reach PMF and prototypes that they can understand can improve the chance.

Outside of the startup context, I have also seen prototypes (hand written way back when that was a thing) resonate with FAANG directors much more than brainstorming.

I am very much for not just vibe it, and the biggest risk of prototypes is they lend to just directly launching broken systems to production. But I think this is a different topic than reaching PMF.

pjjpo··on Evacuation of U.S. troops from Mideast base sends community groups scrambling
Schools getting blown up is also a bummer. Everything about this situation and maybe the world is a bummer.

As soon as we stop treating these as bummers, there is literally nothing stopping a cycle of destruction. There may not be anyways, I don't know but giving up on empathy entirely seems even more dangerous than being bad at it.

pjjpo··on Untaxed Wealth of Richest 0.1% Is More Than Assets of World’s Poorest Half
The article focuses on offshore accounts but as far as I know, buy - borrow - die doesn't require offshore accounts.
pjjpo··on My son pleasured himself on Gemini Live. Entire family's Google accounts banned
Ah looks like this was deleted (again?) overnight. All makes sense now.
pjjpo··on My son pleasured himself on Gemini Live. Entire family's Google accounts banned
I randomly found that post on the top page of Google just searching for "Gemini Live" interestingly enough. Does it mean the post was deleted and then restored? Trying to make sense of this whole thread which is arguably more confusing than the Reddit one.
pjjpo··on Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says 'I think we've achieved AGI'
This is the problem. He does interview extremely influential people, even state leaders like Modi.

The content is not great but many people will buy it just from the name power alone. Unfortunately he seems to be a truly influential person.

pjjpo··on Nanobrew: The fastest macOS package manager compatible with brew
While I have some vague recollection of homebrew feeling slow in the past I don't know when - I want to say well before Nov 2025. And recently absolutely no such feeling, and great features like auto update handling, etc just working. It's really good stuff.

Python has powered Linux package management to reasonable result for a long time, Python itself is ironic for having tricky platform constraints that ended up being best solved with uv's excellent rust solver. For homebrew I would personally not stress over a Rust frontend - but if it keeps some of the FUD out then maybe it's worth it!

pjjpo··on Woman in Labor at Florida Hospital Brought in Zoom Court for Refusing C-Section
I also needed to reread that paragraph a few times but it seems a law professor was commenting on the case with an expression of what the hospital could have been thinking, not that anyone actually said anything about being a bad mother.
pjjpo··on Lenovo’s new ThinkPads score 10/10 for repairability
There are those times we may be seeing the source of LLM language training. I had the same reaction of sounding like one but agree it's likely not.
pjjpo··on Boss-CSS: I created another "CSS-in-JS" lib
> I wouldn't be able to count on my 2 hands how many times I've Googled the term tailwind line-height, because of course, it's leading and I keep forgetting that.

Me too! Some being text, others font, is one that constantly trips me up.

pjjpo··on Reverse engineering the KakaoTalk app so I can build a Beeper Bridge
Salts are fixed - so if you salt with, i.e. the email address, any attacker will also do that. The key derivation strategy of password managers is already known. Especially in a browser, salting strategy cannot be hidden so it's a known factor. As sad as it is, for those without good hygiene, either they are at risk of compromise, or tie identity to a device and are at risk of losing access entirely. There is currently no magic solution.
