pjerem··on All I wanted was a custom domain email
Too bad the author didn't check Fastmail. It checks all the boxes and on top of that its, imho, the best finished product for mail / cal / contacts and by far.

It may even be my favorite tech product at all. Should I be able to pay for more storage space for the drive (options are very limited), it would approach the perfection.

pjerem··on Pirating the Pirates
> There's an unfathomable number of games that were released on the Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, and most famously DOS that were made by one or two people, self-published, and have now completely fallen into obscurity to a point where it's not 100% clear who owns the copyright and who to give money even if you wanted to, which has led to the "probably-illegal-but-not-really-enforced" term of "Abandonware".

Mostly unrelated but if you are looking for this "effervescence" in modern times, don't hesitate to take a look at Pico8 games and Ich.io.

On Pico 8, everything is free (except the one time pico 8 licence).

On Itch.io I bought a ridiculous 400 games pack for a few dollars a few years back.

You have to dig a little but I found more gems in both those libraries than I expected.

pjerem··on Pirating the Pirates
Archive.org is full of copyrighted software without known authors. I know it because i'v found a lot of Pocket PC & Palm software from studios/companies that don't even exist anymore.

It's not ideal but it's better than losing it.

pjerem··on Anthropic's IPO prospectus shows AI vision, surging costs
You are living in another world. I don’t know a single people who is not using ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. Even my non tech parents are using it everyday.

pjerem··on Jev in 25 Lines of Python
It's not the same thing but it have advantages Jev don't have like ... being local.
pjerem··on Spymarks, not Watermarks
Where I live it’s forbidden so I’m pretty confident that nobody is doing it, at least unintentionally.
pjerem··on Spymarks, not Watermarks
> Apple’s always on watch has a declared 15 second buffer for live audio, and a worse scenario of summarizing your conversations for later

Even if you trust them, maybe as an user you can be ok with that. As a non-user who will talk with people wearing Apple Watches, I disagree being recorded and my conversations with the watch owner summarized.

Where do I disagree for that ?

pjerem··on Show HN: I made a flight simulator, except you're just a passenger
I’m not at ease in an airplane. I rarely fly but i actually like it, but I’m really anxious.

What helps me is always taking a seat near the wings. First that’s where the plane moves the less. And moreover, it’s pretty reassuring watching them supporting the plane in their great stability, they always move way slower than the cabin.

pjerem··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
Nope, that's my point, on your kindle, the screen is a Kaleido 3, which is a black&white+lcd layer: https://www.reddit.com/r/eink/comments/1i8e26x/seriously_how...

Vs Spectra (the expensive screen): https://www.eink.com/upload/2023_11_14/3_20231114082849vy2as...

pjerem··on Hugging Face is billing OpenAI $100M for hacking it
Maybe because all the AI actors, probably including Hugging Face, want to push the narrative that AI companies aren’t responsible for what their agents are doing.

I think our societies will have to settle on this.

pjerem··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
You have to distinguish the fake color e-ink that are used in mass consumer products which are actually black&white e-ink plus an LCD layer and are expensive, and the real color e-ink where each micro capsule embeds 3 to 5 different inks of different colors.

The latest are pretty complex devices, very slow to refresh (hence why they are not used in your e-reader) and also very expensive. But the rendering is way much nicer because it’s real ink that is used to render the colors.

pjerem··on Microsoft removes the COPILOT function from Excel
=COPILOT("Sum up all the shit in this shit and convert it to Yens, also calculate the taxes and add 0.5 for the fees");

It was an excel function that would never be deterministic, I bright idea.

pjerem··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
fwiw, I’m already playing windows games on my Retroid (Android ARM Snapdragon) console and it’s already really good at least compatibility wise.

I mean, you can comfortably play GTAV on this thing and it’s powered by a smartphone processor.

Your dreams are going to become true.

pjerem··on My Health Insurance Denied My Cancer Treatment. I Emailed the CEO
Yes of course, the doctor is “free” to choose between the treatment that the patient will be able to afford and the one the patient will not.

Sorry guys but you are really living in a shithole country.

pjerem··on Writing a better reality: The case for optimistic sci-fi (2022)
Stargate SG-1 was maybe optimistic sci-fi.

Actually it was settled in the present but it was full of good human vibes and human values.

It had an incredible vibe of “humanity is good and humanity will stand against anything bad”. It was really naive in how it described the human nature but I’m sure it was deliberate.

And also it was fun.

pjerem··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
Actually, the IAs don’t mess up Shopify with Spotify.
pjerem··on I have a theory that software drives people insane
Oh, Nice reading :)
pjerem··on iPhone Duo
I agree but that’s still my point.

The thing looks totally unpolished. The corners are horrible, the UX looks subpar.

It’s the first time I feel like Apple totally rushed a new product without any real vision.

*Xiaoco, I invented this ref.

pjerem··on Apple Unveils iPhone Duo
Oh but I agree that the Apple Watch does all of that very well, I myself use it mostly for this.

I was just answering to gp : the Apple Watch pretty much only make sense if you own an iPhone. Else, you’d better buy any other smartwatch brand which will allow you to do much more than an Apple Watch without an iPhone.

pjerem··on Apple Unveils iPhone Duo
Honestly I have owned two Apple Watches and you are missing nothing. They do look nice if that’s your taste, but they are extremely locked down and are pretty useless without an iPhone. I cannot cite even one application that is a killer app on the Apple Watch. Most apps are just a companion for the iOS part of the app.
pjerem··on iPhone Duo
Oh wow.

That looks extremely boring and unexciting. It doesn’t look like it’s Apple, it looks like Xiaoco Fold Z Duo 16.

pjerem··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
OTOH, Claude also forgot its own system prompt as turn passes. Claude is almost jailbreaked once you virtually gain its confidence and will answer prompts it would never have answered is you asked right at the start of the conversation.

It's weird to be able to use social engineering against a program.

pjerem··on Robot writes in languages it has never seen before (2019)
(2019)

That's the point.

pjerem··on Watch Los Angeles get built, one building at a time (1880–2026)
My impression of LA when I got there was that I would never live there, even in the nicest spots. Which confirms my intuition that the richest have no taste.

Also it’s an American city made for cars so it doesn’t help me to like it.

pjerem··on Ask HN: Fable hacked my piano, can I release the results?
Sounds like your experience from LLMs dates back to 2022.
pjerem··on A/I shuts down
It sounds like you don’t know what it means to have your ancestors fighting to death for freedom and rights, being enslaved in work camps…

The fight is to never get to this situation again and to keep the rights people died for you to have.

You act like things are binary “comfort” vs “horrible life”. It’s not like Fascism grows slowly and then suddenly you are locked.

pjerem··on "Next-token predictor" is the wrong mental model for LLMs
Good example.

It’s also like saying our brains are just electric circuitry incorporated in meat. It’s true but it seems that consciousness emerges from this.

The fact that LLMs are next token predictors isn’t the interesting or impressive part. Actually my brain strictly is a black box predicting (or choosing) my next word/action/move… based on a complex existing context (my thoughts, the environment, my physical state, my senses…).

FWIW, I don’t believe LLMs are sentient, but I don’t think either that we have enough knowledge to rule it out.

pjerem··on An 'Exercise Pill' Just Cleared Its First Human Test

pjerem··on Draft Punk – The Campaign for Alive 2027 – Alive2027.com
It says required but I managed to submit without.

I guess it's vibe coded and this field is anyway pretty redundant with Country.

Ironic that you cannot choose anything in this list if you are from France, like, the Daft Punks.
