pixpop··on Ask HN: Newly realized “hacker”. Cry for help
You might find embedded systems development more up your alley. The hardware is always broken in some way and you often have to get very creative to work around those deficiencies. Especially when there's an ASIC involved.

You'll get to experience a whole different class of aneurysms ;-)

pixpop··on Ask HN: Why is it called an “on-line” man page
It means you read it on your computer. You don't need to go find the hardcopy.
pixpop··on Ask HN: How important is workplace image and perks to you?
None of these things is of any importance to me. I would not consider them when applying for a job.
pixpop··on Forth: The Hacker’s Language
> Any realistic alternative to C must understand interrupts, memory mapped registers etc..

In what way does C understand interrupts?

pixpop··on McDonald's Will Give Away Free Big Macs from an ATM Machine
Department of redundancy department.
pixpop··on Ask HN: Do you use an external keyboard? Which one?
I use KUL Se-87. I forget which keys are in it, but I wish the springs were a little heavier. Maybe I just need to learn to type more gently. I use it on mac, windows, and linux all the time (via a kvm switch).

My finger joints are all messed up from decades of typing on computer keyboards.

pixpop··on Best Blood Pressure Monitors
Suspicious that everything has approximately the same number of votes.
pixpop··on Kodak says it’s bringing back Ektachrome film
> A decent full frame 35mm digital will probably beat a film medium format comfortably on colour reproduction, resolution and clarity. But Damnit, film just looks "real"

And what of larger formats? Where do you get your 4"x5" digital back, or 8"x10"? Maybe you can do it with a scanning back, but it's hardly equivalent.

pixpop··on Ask HN: How do you reduce eye strain during long computing bouts?
I got custom progressive lenses made with a 'computer' prescription. This has my eyes relaxed when looking at my normal screen viewing distance (approximately arm's length) but gives me more magnification when looking down, e.g. at the keyboard or anything on my desk. This has worked well for me.
pixpop··on The terrible PIC ecosystem
> I want things I can use in Makefiles and properly script, that are available in my distro of choice and that generally work in the same fashion as the tool chains I’m used to.

You can use the assembler, linker and other tools that come with mplabx in a traditional tool chain, with Makefiles, scripts, and your editor of choice.

pixpop··on Ask HN: What 5 languages would you teach someone new to CS?
1. One of scheme / common lisp / clojure

2. One of C++ / Java

3. Javascript

4. One of Python / Perl

5. Bash

pixpop··on NIST recommendation: Use random generated passwords
Doesn't that result in them being written down? How do you remember fifty or so randomly generated passwords?
pixpop··on Coding for SSDs
Sorry I can't provide links. But I work for a large tech company, currently qualifying SSDs for a new project. We ran into serious bugs with drives from a particular well-known SSD manufacturer (certain workloads cause drives to become unresponsive until power is cycled) and were able to demand detailed root cause analysis. In at least two cases they uncovered new bugs in code that had been inserted purely to improve the numbers for 4k random writes on certain benchmarks. These are consumer drives, not enterprise, and are current production.
pixpop··on Ask YC: Laser Eye Surgery?
I had it done about 3 years ago so I could drive or use a camera without glasses. It lets me buy el-cheapo reading glasses & sunglasses (previously needed prescription), so I can have as many pairs as I want. (I'm over 50, and Lasik does nothing for accomodation).

My night vision is actually better than before. This is because I had to wear glasses before, and if they weren't prefectly clean, I would see halos & streaks. I had difficulty keeping my glasses clean.

There was one minor unexpected side effect. I do some work with lasers & optics, and since the surgery, a laser focussed to a tiny spot looks to me like a cluster of spots, which is an annoyance.

So lots of benefits, and no real complaints. However, looking back on the experience, I'm shocked at myself for doing it, and taking the risk that I could end up with serious vision defects. I was lucky that I had a good result, but my attitude has changed since then. I doubt I would make the same choice now.

pixpop··on Tutorial on Good Lisp Programming Style
I didn't even notice it was ps until your post. I just clicked the link, and it showed up in the browser. Is your browser broken?
pixpop··on Coding it right the first time
I put zero effort into making code compile right the first time. The compiler (gcc) is much faster at finding errors than I am. Where I do put effort is into making sure the algorithm is correct, something the compiler is not so good at.
pixpop··on A survival guide for people with Asperger syndrome
Is there some tendency for people to falsely claim they have Asperger's disorder?
pixpop··on How Prozac sent the science of depression in the wrong direction
How do they explain why depression comes back when the meds are withdrawn?
pixpop··on The next big programming language feature after closures
"A testament of how effective aggregate operations is demonstrated by the success of the array-oriented languages APL, J, and K. "

This must be some new usage of the word "success" of which I was previously unaware...

pixpop··on Aquamacs 1.4 is out
I used Aquamacs for a while, but reverted to Carbon emacs, because it was easier to make similar to emacs on Linux that I also use regularly. If you don't use emacs anywhere else, Aquamacs would be fine, I think.
pixpop··on Ask HN: how did you fix problems with bad sleep?
Alcohol generally worsens RLS. It also makes apnea much worse. Most sleeping pills also make apnea worse. The one I've found that doesn't is Trazadone, and it seems to keep working indefinitely. The pills (e.g. Mirapex) for RLS do work, but make me nauseated every night.
pixpop··on M-expressions==LISP in "normal syntax"-kills LISP?
Why do you think of parentheses as something about LISP that needs to be fixed? What exactly is the problem?
pixpop··on Ask YC: Mac Text Editors
Cost is a lousy reason to choose something else over Textmate. It's high quality software, worth every penny.

Having said that, I paid for Textmate and used it for a couple of months before chucking it in favor of emacs. I'd never used emacs before, though my first editor was TECO for those who remember. I started with Aquamacs emacs, which I found no more difficult to pick up than Textmate. Ultimately, I switched to Carbon emacs, because it is more like the emacs I use on Linux and Cygwin.

pixpop··on Ask YC: How do you build a company with no or little politics
Require employees to watch powerpoint presentations about it. If that doesn't stop it, nothing will.
pixpop··on An Under-Appreciated Fact: We Don't Know How We Program
There's a well-known process for creating paintings. It's practiced by Thomas Kinkaid, a well-known, highly successful artist. For some definition of success...
pixpop··on Incremental Development for Games (Is Hard)
"Be careful here, though. Even seemingly trivial things like UI or VFX can have a massive impact on the usability of your game." UI has a massive impact on usability? Well I'll be darned.
pixpop··on Self-Commenting Code
I think that's what used to be called design.
