pixelpoet··on Probing picosecond depairing currents in type-II superconductors
I use mathematical jargon all the time, but I gotta admit, getting major Turbo Encabulator[0] vibes here :D

pixelpoet··on A Short History of the Information Age
> They showed that light intensity in the fiber would drop only 99 percent over one kilometer.

Well, at least we know it's not LLM written.

pixelpoet··on Black Holes or Black Hole Stars? Astronomers Spar over 'Little Red Dots'
Sadly, those won't come.
pixelpoet··on Subnormal floating-point numbers are expensive on Intel processors
That's what I mean though- in the Core 2 Duo vs K8 / Athlon days, Intel was much slower for denormals and subnormals than AMD. I'm not sure why but I thought this was common knowledge.
pixelpoet··on Subnormal floating-point numbers are expensive on Intel processors
This has been the case since a zillion years, since the Core 2 Duo days at minimum.
pixelpoet··on South Africa is at risk of becoming a mafia state
I grew up in South Africa, and there was this classic newspaper cartoon back in the day: a kid goes to his dad and says "Dad, I want to become a criminal!" and the dad asks, "Government or private sector?"
pixelpoet··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
Most of them are extremely unstable, which is what the Morse number encodes - the number of directions you can roll down doing action minimisation. I don't think any N-body choreographies can exist in nature, because it requires point masses, exactly equal masses, Newtonian gravity etc.

BTW, I've wondered if it's possible to have N-body choreographies in general relativity; maybe some brave person can explore that :)

pixelpoet··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
I have something similar at https://gravitoy.xyz

With it I have discovered up to 11-dimensional choreographies, see https://lycium.github.io/hyperchoreography/ and code at https://github.com/lycium/hyperchoreography/

Exposition video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=sIfff10hYZA

Example rendered output from Gravitoy (not of a choreography though): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3BwCoiwsGk

Looks like I need to update my catalogue to take into account the many different 2D choreographies from the references on this site!

pixelpoet··on Bespoke: A programming language for people who say please
Spelt, not spelled; tisk tisk ;)

I love everything about this!

pixelpoet··on Bespoke: A programming language for people who say please
Hear, hear! I should very much like to see the Linux kernel adopt Bespoke instead of that terribly uncouth Rust manner of speaking, like a mouth full of nails.
pixelpoet··on Methods for Random Gradients (2024)
The difficult part is making those beautiful colour palettes.
pixelpoet··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
You definitely don't want to rock the boat and undermine the diamond industry, that much is crystal clear.
pixelpoet··on Porting my 1993 Amiga game to Godot, with an LLM reading the 68000 assembly
Rocket Knight Adventures!!! Immediately I can hear the music in my head, and I haven't thought about this game in a long, looooong time! Thank you for mentioning it, I'm off to get a Mega Drive emulator :)
pixelpoet··on Tmp.0ut Volume 5
Is the zero instead of capital O in the title intentional?
pixelpoet··on Terence Tao explains 6 essential mathematical concepts [video]
At least spell his name correctly, my goodness...

Terence Tao.

pixelpoet··on P99 0 ms* autocomplete for 240M domain names
Pretty sure we mean < 1ms rather than actually instantaneous.
pixelpoet··on Qwen3.8-Flash-Next
And full of made up statistics.
pixelpoet··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
Another example is autocorrect absolutely destroying the world's ability to spell even the most basic words. Ever since mobile phones came along and removed the friction of walking to the dictionary, everywhere I look people write as if they have extremely serious brain trauma - grown adults struggling to write as well as we used to as children!
pixelpoet··on old.reddit.com Now Requires a Login
It really gives me the heebie jeebies when people refer to Reddit (or any website) as an app, and in general demand that everything that used to be a simple website get turned into a data-hoovering Electron abomination.
pixelpoet··on AMD's Instinct MI455X: Aiming for the Sun
I guess I submitted the link at the wrong time or something.
pixelpoet··on 85.3 GFlops: Optimizing FP32 Matrix Multiplication on a Single AMD Zen 3 Core
Zen3 isn't the best performing CPU today, though of course it'll never approach GPU level (which is pretty much ASIC level for matrix muls with special units). CPUs are getting dedicated "AI accelerators" too so it'd be interesting to compare per watt. The real limit is almost certainly memory bandwidth, not flops.

It would also be very interesting to see someone like Fabien Giesen / ryg do a maxed out AVX512 version for Zen5. His code's so fast it makes Intel 13900k's self destruct.

pixelpoet··on Fable is now included on Max plans (up to 50% of weekly limit)
The next logical thought would be, maybe I want the thing I can't have (i.e. 100% of subscription used for Fable).
pixelpoet··on Fable is now included on Max plans (up to 50% of weekly limit)
If they want to sell me 50% something I don't want then they get 0% sale and my money goes to their competitors. Simple as that, Anthropic.
pixelpoet··on Qwen 3.8
Yes, yes, yes! I'm absolutely ready and waiting with dual Strix Halo machines here and really want something approaching Opus at home. Speed is secondary concern for now, that would absolutely change the world.

Qwen 3.6 27b 8b quant 16b kv cache is already pretty good on the Strix.

pixelpoet··on Why We're Dismantling the International Criminal Court
> Most of us would struggle to imagine a world in which U.S. soldiers, police officers, Border Patrol agents and elected leaders could be dragged before an international court, tried by judges from random countries across the globe, found guilty under international laws we neither consent to nor control, and then imprisoned thousands of miles from America.

Strange how they don't have any problems with abducting people from other nations (plenty of recent examples) to stand trial in the US under US laws, complete with meme'ing about being sent to alligator Alcatraz etc.

pixelpoet··on Acronym Fatigue Series Introduction: why I'm wary of acronyms
I disagree, it's both right in the title and the topic of the article. Weariness (fatigue), not wariness.
pixelpoet··on Acronym Fatigue Series Introduction: why I'm wary of acronyms
Yes, I'm aware of the word wary; now look up "weary". Wary as in "beware" is different from weary as in tired. I see this mistake all the time...
pixelpoet··on Acronym Fatigue Series Introduction: why I'm wary of acronyms
Since we're talking about fatigue: weary*
pixelpoet··on Neural Render Proxies for Interactive and Differentiable Lighting
Feels good to read this :)
pixelpoet··on Sick leave: Germany rising but not the worst in Europe
People who make such blanket statements only see things in black and white.
