pinpeliponni··on Rethinking the D-Bus Message Bus
Hmm. If it doesn't have SELinux policy that actually does something, it probably shouldn't run as a daemon. Let's see how I can remove it... :(
pinpeliponni··on June Introduces Intelligent Wall Oven for $1,995
When it's not warming up my food it can go to the mines...

I just have to first install more power lines for my house, brb

pinpeliponni··on F.lux major update
Does the Linux version work with Wayland already?

Edit: Apparently this is now built-in to Gnome 3.24+, using the name Night Light. I am happy camper again!

pinpeliponni··on It's Never Too Late to Learn Guitar
Yousician (https://yousician.com/). It's like an interactive guitar teacher, offering backround tracks, and evaluating how you play. The really surpsising thing is how well it works.
pinpeliponni··on U.S. Nuclear Comeback Stalls as Two Reactors Are Abandoned
Most of nuclear waste should not called that. The more radioactive something is the more energy production capability it still has. Only a lunatic puts that stuff in caskets and digs caves for storage, and doesn't reap that. If the spent fuel was re-used correctly, we could run all the humanity's toys with it for several hundred thousand years without breaking any sweat.

... And that brings us to those costs. There are parties that benefit from causing the costs to ramp up. So they have tried to find out ways to do exactly that, and prevent the good cost reducing innovations from reaching even testing so they could be mass adopted some day.

It is widely known that we have knowledge of vastly safer reactor types, but we haven't been able to even get permits for full scale test runs. We know that there are several things about the fuel cycle we could improve, but we have to stove the best stuff away. We could actually go and fix some of the old installations, and their design features, but we are not allowed to do that either. Probably we could drop the price of nuclear power to a fraction (say, 1/10th?), but it is not politically correct to talk about that publicly. And so on, and so on.

Many people simply want nuclear power to fail.

pinpeliponni··on Porting a historic Python2 module to Python3
Just tell the Python 2 users frankly to go fuck themselves.
pinpeliponni··on NTLM Hash Leaks: Ancient Microsoft Design Flaw
NTLM was deprecated in 1999, when Windows 2000 came out. You have been supposed to use krb5 since then, and disabled the NTLM. Why is anything about NTLM still news? You have to specifically enable it on newest Windows platforms, because afaik it has been disabled by default for some 5+ years now.
pinpeliponni··on Even after cutting staff, SoundCloud only has enough money for 50 more days
I don't understand why anyone would fund SoundCloud for a day. If someone can share what kind of sales pitch they have used to investors, I'd like to see it!

Their income apparatus seems to be "sing up for free". It's hard to charge for extra services, when your core product does almost everything already. Advertising doesn't really work, because their demographic groups are heavily leaned towards adblock usage.

Most of the content is indie music. The increased availability - since 1990s - of cheap music production tools has enabled everyone, and their dog, to make music recordings. The downside to that is that it has got a lot harder to find the quality after the quantity has exploded since. So, for discovery service SoundCloud fails. There should instead be a curated version with 1/1000th of the content left.

Then why many people really go to SoundCloud. They go for commercial pirated music, or "remixes" - whatever. I've seen many albums offered on SoundCloud. Even a small number generates serious amounts of site activity. I have not understood this either, because SoundCloud does not by default offer FLAC downloads, and there are better services for that stuff...

pinpeliponni··on Fedora 26 released
Gnome 3 has been dpi independent from day 0, so what are you talking about?
pinpeliponni··on OpenBSD and the modern laptop
I am running virtual machines with iSCSI storage over 802.11an... It's fast enough even for that. (Well, there's latency, but good enough for my development boxes.)
pinpeliponni··on Linus: “I no longer feel like I can trust ‘init’ to do the sane thing”
Perhaps. But then again, the RHEL people really need many of the features SystemD offers. The Ubuntu Beta people can keep running init if they must.
pinpeliponni··on Defending a website with Zip bombs
At least none of the Java libraries seemed to fall for this when I tried.
pinpeliponni··on Britain’s European allies desert it in a vote at the UN
Why would EU care? As UK is not part of Europe anymore, they really have no reason to care about .io islands...
pinpeliponni··on Reddit Is Raising Funds at a Valuation of $1.7B
You call forging votes, and banning large parts of the community a "seismic product shifts" ? :)
pinpeliponni··on Comey's opening remarks [pdf]
I can't even... IANAL, but I would have written memo on those discussions as well because I would have been scared witless.
pinpeliponni··on Tectonic: a modernized, self-contained TeX/LaTeX engine
I love *tex. You want to install software, it pulls in half of the galaxy as dependencies. The equivalent of black holes in software.
pinpeliponni··on Ask HN: What Happened to the Startup School MOOC?
Unrelated, but also check out http://schoolofherring.com/videos/ for some general leadership lessons.
pinpeliponni··on Gollvm from Google
There's no reason GC couldn't work on GPUs. No one just has bothered implementing it yet.
pinpeliponni··on The long, winding road for driverless cars
We haven't even got to the hardest questions yet because driverless cars are still so far away.

Think of a situation where you have to choose from either hitting an other car killing everyone inside it but saving you, or driving off the road killing you but saving everyone. Well, we all save ourselves if we can choose (timing, etc). But what if the other car has 5 passengers and you are alone?

The driverless car will be required to kill you, the driver. In future the car will know, and take away your control, and simply kill you.

When people realize this, and the legislation has to take a stance, there will be a major backlash against driverless cars. People are basically selfish.

pinpeliponni··on WCry 2.0 functions perfectly under Wine
Most interesting. However, you have to butcher your system a bit in order to make that happen... That doesn't say there aren't setups like that, but they are really one out of million.
pinpeliponni··on I Don’t Believe in Blockchain
To be honest the banks do not know what to do with blockchains.

Their best properties and the banks' needs are not aligned. When you add in stuff the banks need like forcible retraction of transactions, and transaction fees, you have essentially destroyed blockchains. The moment a major bank releases production ready blockchain of their own it will be such that most will not get any real value out of it.

What they are doing (not what they are saying) is that they are trying to figure out how to hug the blockchain technology to death.

pinpeliponni··on PfSense 2.5 and AES-NI
As long as you keep the keys not in HSM, that'll be true. Should also require the use of TPM for storing keys..
pinpeliponni··on Ada: a C Developer's Perspective
Also, TLS support. Ada Web Server uses OpenSSL for that. It's not possible to develop a secure web application with ADA at this moment, because you can't run one of the known weak spots with ADA based implementation. If you can't do that, why bother at all...

I did consider doing all my projects using ADA. I really want to love ADA. I simply can't because some fundamental building blocks are missing. I am very disappointed over this.

pinpeliponni··on Passing the Baton
Original discussion from over a decade ago was more about clashing opinions, strong personalities, and anti-NSA sentiment (how SELinux ws handled). Grsecurity has always been very opinionated, and technically well implemented. That has never been the issue. In theory they also could have chosen to maintain only one version - in the official kernel.

To clarify some technical aspects, SELinux and grsecurity are not answers to the same problems, and they never meant to be. SELinux was always meant to implement things like multi-level security, bell-lapadula model, and extending 3rd party application with SeLinux roles, and the security daemon. Grsecurity has file oriented rbac system that was more approachable, and a variety of other patches (which are what grsecurity has been more known for - they have been always very excellent).

Knowing Spender, he was probably actually paid to stop. That's my guess. Not going to iterate on that.

pinpeliponni··on Lyrebird – An API to copy the voice of anyone
Funny thing is, this is approximately where CIA was with similar technology in closer to 2000. They did some demos for politicians about how they can given anyone's fake their messages. That stuff is golden for propaganda means, and for confusing stuff like military chains of command. Today the CIA probably has worked out all the robotic artifacts already, and their output is really indistinguishable.
pinpeliponni··on John Deere has turned itself into a poster-child for the DMCA
You can't lump European countries up like that. There are vast differences. Most offer high levels of entrepreneurial financing, supporting government policies, separate tax systems for entrepreneurs, programs, entrepreneurial education, high ratio of R&D investments turned into profit, and so on.

Actually, on most indicators most European countries lead US. The ones that are significantly lower are preferences towards entrepreneurship (most actually do not want that career option, and go for stable boring jobs), and the actual amounts of start-up companies. But still, the economic output of the EU per capita is higher than that of the US (has been for several years already), so who cares.

Here's something to read on in case you are really interested: Global Enterpreunership Monitor 2016-2017 global report (http://www.gemconsortium.org/report)

pinpeliponni··on Shadow Brokers exploits are patched or inactive on supported Windows platforms
I noticed Microsoft has been very careful not to mention NSA.
pinpeliponni··on Google Talk Is Being Discontinued
Microsoft does support full federation. As long as you federate Skype servers. I know that's a bit lame, but since they bundle most of their products with most of their other products in licensing, no one in business seems to care.

Google doesn't do even that, as they don't offer anything on-site (anymore). They have seriously failed on business markets. I don't know about consumer market, because I mostly just send dick pics for the giggles to random people I don't know.
