pinkunicorn··on Resolutions for programmers (2012)
1. Follow the 12 resolutions
pinkunicorn··on Amazon Invades India
Actually I've had 1 unpleasant experience out of 3 so far. I wanted to buy an item at a lower cost(because it was a lot cheaper on other sites) and asked an exec about the same. He could've said something like "Just monitor the prices, they might come down" and I would've done it, instead he said "I'll personally keep a tab on the prices for you and will intimate you in case the price falls to your expectations". While it definitely looked like a false promise, I assumed from all the online reviews that he actually would follow up. But what alerted me was a BuyHatke monitor when the prices fell down. The prices stayed low for two days and I waited to see if the customer exec would really follow-through, but he didn't.

There was no real loss to me, but it was just an unpleasant experience. I am pretty sure that wouldn't happen if it was a refund/return.

pinkunicorn··on Amazon Invades India
You have my apologies. We often joke that anything northern than Bangalore is North India!
pinkunicorn··on Amazon Invades India
They already do. I live(rather work from home) in a remote village in Southern India. Ordered a Nikon camera recently which the local stores said will take atleast 7 days to procure, and Amazon delivered in 3 days. The item was shipped all the way from Northern India(Nagpur) and guess what, it was 500INR cheaper on Amazon.

While on one hand I was more than happy to get it in three days and a little cheaper, I also realized that this won't last forever. Amazon's capital has gotta run out at some point in time and the cheap/fast service will stop there.

pinkunicorn··on Big Company vs. Startup Work and Compensation
The last line is pretty important -

"You should figure out what the relevant tradeoffs are for you."

The author is just summing up his experience. Individual mileage definitely varies!

pinkunicorn··on Martin Shkreli Arrested on Securities Fraud Charges
Reminds of a rumor about the CEO of a BigCo. He wanted to buy a news paper company, so he went to them and said "Do you want to work for us or against us?"
pinkunicorn··on The first person to hack the iPhone is building a self-driving car
Reminds of the quote from "The Social Network"

>> "If they had engineered a self-driving car, they would've engineered a self driving car".

You are just being absurdly accusative in your comment. That guy has done a self-driving car with nothing but tools available in the market.

pinkunicorn··on Amazon Shows Off New Prime Air Drone with Hybrid Design
Shit, I thought this was a marketing gimmick. Looks like they might actually be delivering. And it looks quite awesome to be honest.

And development in Israel? Wow!

pinkunicorn··on Ask HN: What is your job? Do you like it? What was your favorite job?
Curious, what % of time do you spend for admin/payroll/personnel? Would something like Zenefits/Gusto reduce the time?
pinkunicorn··on AdNauseam Browser Extension: Clicking Ads So You Don't Have To
Well this is amazing!

I honestly think if a majority of people start using this, Click Fraud will eventual become indistinguishable from clicks made my AdNauseam and ad companies for once will worry about milking the ad-cow.

But then... I know this will die in someway or the other.

Even the terms wouldn't probably make sense unless you've used them. Elastic Block Storage - I surely didn't get what it was supposed to do when I read it loud the first time.

Elastic Container Service - "Why the heck is it Elastic!?" was my reaction the first time I read the term.

pinkunicorn··on Google Picks Diane Greene to Expand Its Cloud Business
Haven't had a chance to try GKE, but I'll give it a whirl for my upcoming project.

With Lambda, its the whole ecosystem around it which makes it better than App Engine. A file changes in S3 and you want to do something? Lambda, in a few simple lines of code.

But what about ECS? Lambda? Role Based Authentication? EBS snapshots?
pinkunicorn··on Google Picks Diane Greene to Expand Its Cloud Business
I don't understand why the reporters hold Google in such high regard, particularly in the cloud business. Here is a statement from the article:

> "At the same time, analysts say, the company’s offerings in cloud development services — computing, storage, data analytics and others — are already comparable to Amazon’s."

AWS is far far ahead of GC and it is in no way comparable. Plus the ecosystem around AWS has evolved and is much more stable. There are a lot of articles explaining "how to fix X or how to do Y" with AWS than with GC.

I also don't think Google will ever have the level of customer obsession that Amazon has. Your account got hacked? No worries, AWS will waive the fee, but I honestly don't think Google will ever do that.

Google is a technology company and might outrun Amazon in terms of technical superiority, but I don't think they can simply outrun Amazon in cloud business.

pinkunicorn··on Large Companies Game H-1B Visa Program
This also kind of makes me sad. My cousin who works for one of the service based companies got the H1B and is now in the US. I consider myself if not better talented, more knowledgeable than him. I worked my ass off in college, got multiple offers from Google/Amazon/Facebook and yet because of H1B, I had to work in India. The problem is not so much with being in India, but being distanced from the company HQ. I would've been so much better off had I worked at my company's head quarters than in the Indian satellite office.
pinkunicorn··on Large Companies Game H-1B Visa Program
I was questioning the statistic of whether Amazon really filed 700H1B's or not.
pinkunicorn··on Large Companies Game H-1B Visa Program
Wait, Amazon applies for L1 Visas. Do they offer H1B? It is given that they've filed for 700+ H1B's.
pinkunicorn··on Young People Are Happier Than They Used to Be
About damn time. From 17(23 now), I've kept reading news that my generation is flawed in someway or the other. First time I'm reading a news article which says otherwise. This makes me happy.
