pimlottc··on Europe's last regular standard-gauge steam passenger service
Okay, now I really want to ride a steam-powered monorail
pimlottc··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU

pimlottc··on Building a backyard office, the build and cost breakdown
CO2 sensors are not all created equal. The price of a good one is a large chunk of the cost of the device.
pimlottc··on Don't Wordle
And yet it didn’t accept JORTS :/
pimlottc··on Crafting QR Codes: A deep dive into QR code art (2024)
Incredible, by far the most comprehensive review of techniques for beautifying and branding QR codes.

What I would love to see as a companion to this is some sort of rigors benchmark for scanning that attempts to quantify how much real-world scanability is lost. There must be some decoding benchmarks out there that simulate common types of distortion, damage and degradation. What did the original designed of the QR code use to evaluate their work?

pimlottc··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
I don't think that's quite correct; every CS program I've seen involves writing code, quite a lot of it. What they don't teach is /software engineering/: working large codebases, maintaining code, dealing with legacy code, long-term collaboration, working with product managed and designers, etc. That's stuff that you mostly end up having to pickup in the real world outside school.
pimlottc··on My Microscope Is a Dashcam
Good lord, why would you make your website so intentionally hard to read?
pimlottc··on Stop eating Lady Gaga's Oreos
Michael Jackson was a pop star. Selling out was never a sin in pop music.
pimlottc··on Show HN: Check if any of the $656M in unclaimed royalties at The MLC is yours
Agree, this needs context. I thought this was like some sort of unclaimed government funds thing or something at first.
pimlottc··on Pressed Penny Machine Map
There was one in Strasbourg, France, by the cathedral
pimlottc··on How I Under-Engineered My Book
This is arguably what MVP is supposedly to mean
pimlottc··on Meta Files Patent for Facial Recognition, Automatic Recording of People
The episode is "Mark Zuckerberg: The Worst Person of the 21st Century (So Far)", in three parts (eps. 43-45) [1] [2] [3]

pimlottc··on Archie G. Norcross' Maine Forest Fire Maps (1918–22)
If the idea of spending a summer in a firewatch lookout tower sounds cool to you, I highly recommend the indie narrative game Firewatch [0]

pimlottc··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
> they're all sold out to froufrou boogies!

That's specious, Trader Joe's is cheaper than other stores for plenty of items

pimlottc··on Ordinary abundance
For me, the images and text are out of sync; by the time the focus in the image has moved to the next item, the text is already hidden under the image.
pimlottc··on Ordinary abundance
Does not work in Firefox's reader mode, unfortunately
pimlottc··on I built a 500k-domain search engine for makers in a weekend for $10
Sometimes I think people forget how capable computers are. 500k is not much. You can just slap that in a Lucene instance. This is a solved problem.
pimlottc··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
Oh jeez, I hadn’t thought about the blocked element being different than the aria-tagged one. What a nightmare
pimlottc··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
I literally just left a Trader Joe’s and I couldn’t find a single tin
pimlottc··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
What's with the xpath selector? Is that just matching deeply nested elements?
pimlottc··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
What is a "finished" cookie?
pimlottc··on Why Can't You Pack a Bag? (2024)
Buying clothes at your destination doesn't always work out if you're not a standard size -- which may vary dramatically depending where you're going.

> The term "ice cream" is pretty well regulated in the US. Really shows where our priorities are as Americans.

Most natural food products are regulated in the US [0]. Ice cream is not unique in this regard, nor is the standard is particularly onerous compared to others. It easily fits on single page [1].

pimlottc··on Why Addresses Have Numbers
It’s also very over-designed; there are multiple different styles for headings, subheadings, pull quotes, section headings, etc etc. All with their own colors, font faces, font sizes, etc.

And it’s all too bloody dark!

pimlottc··on 50k Boat Names
Any particular reason that “Andiamo” is so popular? It’s apparently Italian for “let’s go” but why is in the top 10? Is there some reference I’m missing?
pimlottc··on Turn satellite imagery into a paper globe you fold yourself
The icons for the different shapes don’t really make a lot of sense. It’s not really obvious how some of them work and many are quite unlike the actual pattern (which you have to scroll down to see on mobile).

Also Cahill–Keyes M, which I’ve never heard of or seen before, is described as “the classic M”. That’s not really helpful.

pimlottc··on Tuxedo No. 2 – Cocktail recipes
There's a weird bug with the infinite scroll where the page width and/or column widths randomly change slightly when I hit the bottom of the page every once in a while
