Tuxedo No. 2 – Cocktail recipes

I like this website a lot and used it as the base recipe book for a program that will tell you what cocktails you can make with the ingredients you have, but also what cocktails you are “one ingredient away from.” https://github.com/ianthehenry/mixologician

It’s a little datalog script - input is a text file, output is a text file. I’ve used it a few times to decide what to pick up at the store!

I use an app called Mixel which tells you the cocktails you are 0/1/... ingredients away from making and has recipes from some famous cocktail books. I like the UI and the info it has for the recipes, but it's not smart enough to know that if you have limes you can make lime juice.

Love this - I'd wanted a little site that helps me see which of the top ~100 cocktails I already have the ingredients to make, and which I need to make a purchase to be able to sample: https://iba-world.com/cocktails/all-cocktails/

When I had more time and money, I planned to try to make one a week, across two years - but I rarely seem to drink these days.

I’m a big fan of the Webtender [1]. A super old school website without style sheets. Tons of information, nicely organized, and everything loads super quickly, as it should be!

I like cocktails. I like cocktail recipes. I don't know why this is on hacker news thought.

There ought to be an XKCD for this, but instead it's from the FAQ.

In short: somebody thought it was interesting enough to submit, and enough other people voted for it that it got to your attention.

That's it.

If it ends up with 2000 points and sits on the new page for 3 days, I'll be quite surprised, but strange subjects do that.

my thoughts exactly.

> I don't know why this is on hacker news thought. (sic)

Because someone posted it, and others upvoted it, and it got enough upvotes while it was new to get recognized by the algorithm and promoted to the front page. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

I feel the same, but it's an unavoidable cycle IMHO. Any subculture that becomes popular gets diluted by more average people, and the content becomes more basic and banal. You can flag and downvote, but eventually there are enough people who treat a platform like HN as a general discussion board, without regard for cultural alignment. It seems that stuff like politics and random recipes are on the rise, but it's not against the rules, so maybe it really is just a general discussion board that's evolving into the mainstream.

Well, it’s our fault. We had forums with categories and those had some random / chit chat category to have off topic discussions with the community while staying on topic anywhere else.

And a lot of the time, this random section was the more active of the whole forum but that was ok because it didn’t impact the other discussions.

But those were less engaging than social networks i guess (which hn is) so here we are.

...whats "on topic" for HN?

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, or celebrities, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

> If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

Or, if you want to be less philosophical: anything that other people would upvote and not flag.

I feel like the cocktail recipes site posted falls closer to on-topic than off-topic then, having only Ingredients and Recipes pages, not even a blog...

Just because you might prefer coffee or soylent doesn't mean some other hackers don't like cocktails. Make yourself some https://entropia.de/Tschunk and relax!

You've missed the point. I enjoy cocktails, and I even think the linked page here is nice, both in cocktail selection and page design, but I don't think it particularly belongs on HN.

Here's an example recipe page that does feel appropriate to me: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48408854

I'm not trying to win any wars here, I only provided a possible explanation to someone's question. Culture evolves and that's fine, or maybe the ratio of technical vs non-technical content is actually stable on HN? I really don't know, but to me it feels like the the volume of random content and low-grade comments is increasing. Personally, I don't think that represents the spirit of HN, but my comment was downvoted so either I'm wrong, the culture has shifted, or the mainstream is already the majority here.

I'm a fan of the Caipirinha however, so thanks for the Tschunk recipe.

I see what you mean, and agree that that kind of submission taking a place on front page would indeed be better, but this submission is still original, done-by-hand work, while pancakes guy served out LLM slop...

Maybe everyone just really, really needs a drink right now?

Somewhat surprising that the Tuxedo cocktail is not on the list...

Any drinks list without a pan galactic gargle blaster is sus

Very cool. French 75 is more interesting in its original formulation based on cognac rather than gin though.

https://tuxedono2.com/french-75-cocktail-recipe

Gin is the original formulation.

The cognac version is either called a "French 75 with cognac", or a "French 125".

Shout out also to Drinkable [1] which is an opensource app for Android/iOS that does the same.

A drink with bourbon and rye makes no sense imho. A rye is just bourbon with a higher percent of rye and less corn. You might as well call it blending your own whiskey.

This is pretty common in rum drinks, especially tiki. Like you said, rye offers something unique separate from traditional “bourbon” and so the flavor profile of the end drink is different

To bring that full circle, Fairmont (the hotel) does their house Old Fashioned using 50/50 rum and bourbon. I believe it was Mount Gay and Woodford.

Highly suggest making an old fashioned flight to try it out. Choose your favorite bourbon (which has a corresponding rye), and make 3 old fashioned, 1 with only bourbon, 1 with only rye, and 1 with a 50:50 blend. You might be surprised which you prefer.

It guarantees a minimum balance of corn and rye in the resulting blend. If you have a whiskey that you know has an appropriate mash bill (e.g. Rittenhouse BiB) then you could be boring and just use that. But there's also more to a whiskey than its mash bill. Blending different kinds can yield new and interesting flavors. And after all isn't that what cocktails are all about?

while it's cool about the negroni, it's missing the (IMHO) better "negroni sbagliato"

Site seems to be crushed under load

It lived long enough to get something archived:

Missing the Rapscallion

There's a weird bug with the infinite scroll where the page width and/or column widths randomly change slightly when I hit the bottom of the page every once in a while

A list of cocktails without a single Long Island Iced Tea variant? That's blasphemy! Now I feel like it's been too long since I've drunk a Blue Motherfucker.

You can dress it however you want, but "cocktail" is just a guise for self-harm.

Do your body a favour and don't drink.

I don't know why the teetotaler community feels the need to comment in any discussion on the internet where alcohol comes up. You don't have to say anything.

There are many risks in life. Most of us make tradeoffs for things which don't maximize longevity but increase happiness in the time we get. For some people that's driving a car, for some people that's getting a sun tan, for some people that's alcohol.

> teetotaler

ah the alcoholics lingo. The word you are looking for is "health conscious".

teetotaler(n.)

also teetotaller, "one who formally pledges to entire abstinence from intoxicating drink," 1834, agent noun from teetotal (q.v.). Related: Teetotaleress (1834); teetotalist (1840).

Invented by the "health conscious" and used as a term of self-identification. As far as I know, nobody thinks of it as anything other than a convenient synonym for "doesn't want to drink alcohol, at all".

It conveniently avoids motivation, too. Several religions forbid alcohol, it's not a good idea for alcoholics, and of course there are people who just think it's a bad idea for any other reason. "I'm a teetotaller" avoids getting into personal details.

You also should not sit in front your PC all day long. And lets not start with living in big cities... ohh the air...
