maybe Fuchsia?
pier25··on Googlebook
The target is definitely not the K12 education market. It looks more like a premium device which most Chromebooks are not.
pier25··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
I had to run it with --no-hot-reload to get a consistent behavior.

> That's like saying express should have feature parity with Nest.js

I disagree but, objectively, validation is a fundamental part of any web app or API.

They shipped Minimal APIs in .NET 6 without validation. The functionality was already there for MVC so it's not like they had to build it from scratch. And yet, they didn't add it until .NET 10.

I'm a fan of Obsidian and your work but dark mode only is an issue for a big percentage of the population.

pier25··on The Future of Obsidian Plugins
I can read it for like a minute or two. After that I get halation issues and the white text seems to start burning into my retina or something.

It's not so bad for a UI like eg Spotify but anything with actual text content is an issue.

Very cool. Shame the website is dark mode only which only makes it harder to read for people with astigmatism.
pier25··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
Never tried .NET 10 but hot-reload was garbage with .NET 9 and 8.

It failed very often and you had to manually restart the dev process. Even when it worked, it was no where as fast as eg using Bun with TS.

Also Minimal APIs didn't have feature parity vs MVC even 4 years after release which is quite frankly insane. I hear in .NET 10 they've finally added some validation. Not sure how it compares to something like FluentValidation which still is one of the most downloaded nuget packages.

pier25··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
Yeah C# is fantastic. I also love EF.

I stopped using it because overall it feels like Microsoft has lost the plot with .NET.

pier25··on TanStack NPM Packages Compromised
> Both Javascript and Typescript have none and want you to import hundreds of libraries

There are plenty of very popular packages with zero dependencies like Hono or Zod. If you decide to blindly install something with hundreds of deps it's on you.

That said, I do agree the JS standard library should provide a lot more than it does now.

pier25··on Postmortem: TanStack NPM supply-chain compromise
It makes more sense to attack packages in NPM since it's by far the most popular package manager.
pier25··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message
Maybe it depends on the country?
pier25··on Local AI needs to be the norm
The Mac Studio is a high end computer that the majority can't afford or justify its expense.

There's plenty of demand for RAM right now. We'll see how this turns out.

pier25··on Local AI needs to be the norm
I'm sure it will happen but I don't think it will be soon.

10 years ago I was using 16GB in my MBP and today it's 48GB. It's just a 3x increase during mostly a bonanza period.

pier25··on Local AI needs to be the norm
How fast do you reckon most people will be able to afford 128-256GB of RAM?
pier25··on I returned to AWS and was reminded why I left
I've been using CF Workers since 2020 or so. The biggest con is that your app will be coupled to their infra. It's less coupled than eg Firebase but still.

For the past 10 years or so I've mostly used Heroku end then Fly. Last year I invested time into switching to self hosting with dokku for new projects. After the initial learning curve it's been great. Honestly don't see the point of using anything else except if I need to run something at the edge.

pier25··on I returned to AWS and was reminded why I left
Maybe but that doesn't mean that the AWS console isn't a royal mess.
pier25··on Scientists warn Atlantic current at risk of shutting down
Ironically what is pushing many countries to a faster adoption of renewables is not climate change but the recent Iran conflict.

Yes tech can help but implementation depends on human nature.

pier25··on Bun's experimental Rust rewrite hits 99.8% test compatibility on Linux x64 glibc

Jarred mentioned having to work on fixing memory leaks as the main motivation to try this.

I was never fully comfortable with Zig given it's much less mature than Rust. Maybe this will be for the better.

pier25··on AI is breaking two vulnerability cultures
It's not only Linux though and many projects don't have the funding to perpetually use something like Mythos.

pier25··on Cloudflare to cut about 20% of its workforce
Hasn't Cloudflare been investing on AI infra for a couple of years now?
pier25··on Nintendo announces price increases for Nintendo Switch 2
Probably related to RAM and storage prices going up just like with the PS5.
pier25··on Cloudflare to cut about 20% of its workforce
If the market had been saturated then there wouldn't have been any (hypothetical) revenue growth which is what the comment above was arguing.

Personally I don't think there was any revenue growth to begin with. They are spending a lot on AI and haven't seen any ROI but for reasons they prefer to fire people and keep investing on AI.

pier25··on Cloudflare to cut about 20% of its workforce
If using AI had a "substantial profit or revenue growth" wouldn't it make more sense to hire more people so they can use more AI and increase revenue?
pier25··on Cloudflare to cut about 20% of its workforce
My read of this:

Their AI costs have increased 600% but this hasn't translated into actual revenue. Also they are probably projecting AI costs to keep growing. They've done the math and at some point it is going to affect their bottom line.

Reducing or limiting AI usage would be inconceivable given Cloudflare itself has invested on AI and is selling AI services. Instead they've opted for reducing about 20% of their head count.
