pie42000··on Ask HN: What is the most compelling reason young people should learn to program?
"Just because a parent wants their child to be able to play the piano with great skill doesn't mean they'll take to it"

And yet the beast, vast majority of kids who were forced to learn to play a musical instrument are grateful that their parents forced them to do it, even if they do not "take to it" i.e. 99.9% of kids. The ones who didn't get forced to learn an instrument regret missing out.

As a parent you are building a human being in your child. You can force them to play sports, play instruments, travel, go to museums, and study hard and learn useful skills. When they are 15 they will complain and wish you would be easier on them. When they are 30, they will thank you and pass on these gifts to their children.

If you let your kids laze around and do whatever, they will ignore you when they are 15, and wish they had stricter parents that forced them to do more things growing up when they are 30.

Obviously there is a balance and a right amount to push kids, but like most things in life, it's better to do too much than too little.

pie42000··on The awake ape: Why people sleep less than their primate relatives
Yes it does. Modern humans have so many more things to do than hunter gatherers or monkeys. Monkeys can't engage in cocaine fueled raves til 6am, work the night shift at a nuclear plant, or pull an all-nighter to pass their organic chemistry mid term. They can't stay awake till 4am watching anime.
pie42000··on Why Jony Ive left Apple to the ‘accountants’
This figure is useless without context. What was this number for previous generations? I suspect it's always super high because a huge demographic for mac's is college students buying their first laptop, obviously it's gonna be their first Mac. Same with software devs. Tons of Macs are used by software devs getting their work computer.
pie42000··on Austin man offers Musk 100 free acres to move Twitter's HQ
It's actually almost identical, if not worse.
pie42000··on California grid set record of 97% renewable power on April 3
Guaranteed 15%+ ROI. Really makes you wonder why more people aren't investing in solar
pie42000··on Are film critics losing sync with audiences?
"The score, made up of audience ratings on a scale of 100, is calculated by taking the percentage of people who rated it at least 60 out of 100 (or 6 out 10) and multiplying it by 100%."

The critics score is calculated with a different formula. Do you discuss this with candidates?

Maybe research your interview questions a bit more before using them.

pie42000··on Are film critics losing sync with audiences?
"A very small minority of UX Researchers come to the correct conclusion, which is that most professional critics have to review every single movie"

Could you provide your sources? This seems like it could be very incorrect, or only partially correct. Keep in mind rottentomatoes is owned by movie studios so they have a vested interest in changing the formula for disregarding audience ratings. I think they already disregard ratings below a certain threshold and other weird shit.

pie42000··on San Francisco cops pull over a Cruise driverless car for no lights on
Yeah, this was my impression as well. In Chicago you have police actively pulling people over all the time. In SF i have literally not seen a single person pulled over in the year I've been here. For context, in Chicago i would see about 1 per day, and double that in Wisconsin.
pie42000··on San Francisco cops pull over a Cruise driverless car for no lights on
Ah yes, "one time in Arkansas" is now applicable to the situation at large. You'd think the HN crowd would be intelligent enough to not do this. This is akin to saying "this website doesn't load on the Nintendo DS web browser therefore..."
pie42000··on Kerouac and Buddhism
Not a bad way to go
pie42000··on How to work with me
Really surprised that a journalist like you doesn't understand the need for brevity. 98% of this "how to work with me" is actually "i like talking about myself". There is like half a sentence of semi-useful (probably aspirational) info on you and then paragraphs of philosophical meandering.

At least Patrick Bateman stuck with a single business card, you had to go and write a whole life story and print it on your digital business card that you presumably shove down everyone's throats.

Consider deleting immediately, i would never work with someone who wrote something like this. Cheers.

pie42000··on How to work with me
Comes off as very silly and insecure. It seems like it's written purely for you to curate your professional persona and to give people a good impression of yourself. A corporate kool-aid drinking work-a-holics version of a Twitter bio, just needlessly long and self-indulgent. At least Twitter bios are limited in length.

If you actually cared about the recipients of this document it would be half a page or shorter and have bullet points of your biggest weaknesses or eccentricities and other actionable info. You aren't Napoleon, nobody needs to read more than a half page about you, especially when most of what you have to say is meaningless corporate jargon.

pie42000··on Amazon intentionally made it hard to cancel Prime subscription in secret project
Uhhh, what part of "customer-obsessed" implies anything positive to you? Drug dealers are also "customer-obsessed". Notice how Amazon is customer-obsessed and not "obsessed with providing a great, ethical, and non-addictive experience for our customers". They are upfront that they will do anything and everything to acquire more customers and extract as much from each customer as possible. This has been clear to anyone for at least half of a decade
pie42000··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
When was the last time a sovereign, democratic, western nation invaded?
pie42000··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
You realize there was also a massive coordinated effort by the media to defeat Nazi Germany, right?

I know it's rare nowadays, but sometimes, gasp, large groups of people across organizations and industries can coordinate for a mutually beneficial and morally virtuous cause. At this point, I'm sure someone could start another massive genocide with HD livestreams of the gas chambers and some people would still be like "hmmm, this coordinated effort to stop Hitler 2.0 sure seems fishy".

I've lost all hope.

pie42000··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
"The non mention of NATO being a pointless organization today but especially in a collapsed Russia world would be good to know."

WHY ISNT MY RIDICULOUS OPINION BEING PRESENTED AS FACT BY THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA??????????????

You realize how insane your arguments are, right?

pie42000··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
"Somehow the war hasn't ended yet, despite of the zillions of Russian tanks that have been destroyed by now."

Well if we're going to be pedantic and childish, then for your information, Russia started the war with 12.3 zillion tanks and the war is still going on because the Russians still have more tanks. The fact that zillions of tanks have been destroyed and that Russia still has plenty more tanks is not somehow a proof that the information about destroyed Russian tanks is false...

This is by design. Paper straws are meant to distract your limited focus from things that actually matter.
pie42000··on Amazon.com announces fourth quarter results [pdf]
Not him, but I miss when search results weren't clogged up with 80 copies of the same piece of shit from the same Chinese factory branded as 80 different items, and rampantly astroturfed reviews. The website used to lead faster and was smoother to use, customer service was much better, less amazon pushing air fryers and rice cookers and other flavor of the month useless shit.
pie42000··on Is watching the 1984 Ghostbusters movie killing people?
Most will have a medical prosecute to remove it
pie42000··on Samsung plans $17B chip plant in Taylor, Texas
Why are people concerned about energy and material costs? Semiconductors are probably the highest margin manufactured goods on the planet, with materials and energy being the lowest cost input to the process. The only good that can compete is bottled water or movie theater popcorn.

This is 100% politically motivated.

pie42000··on British F-35B crash possibly caused by 'rain cover' left on during launch
I mean as a swiss person, your biggest industry (watches) exists almost entirely out of "it looks cool". Rich Militaries buy the F-35 because it's a cool toy, in the same way a rich businessman buys a Patel Phillipe. Not because he needs to tell time, but because he wants to have something fun to play with and look at when he has free time.
pie42000··on British F-35B crash possibly caused by 'rain cover' left on during launch
This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It makes sense for something that you personally own and maintain yourself i.e. a Cesna. Do you expect Air Force 1 pilots to do walk around? Astronauts? Submarines?

These are mostly war machines that have to be scrambled asap, meaning the pilot is expected to jump in and fly. To alter that during peacetime would be silly, as you want to establish habits.

pie42000··on Are people lying more since the rise of social media and smartphones?
If you've never used it you have no idea if it makes you a better person or not because you don't use it. In the same way, it doesn't make an old person better because they proudly proclaim how they've never used used the internet and that makes them better.

I'm sure you've missed out on lots of memorable events, missed opportunities to rekindle old friends hips and reconnect, and let friendships fade that would not have due to social media. I know that's been the case for me. Like everything that is powerful, with great power comes great responsibility.

pie42000··on The Melancholy of Subculture Society (2019)
This is a really silly, outdated world view. You don't need everyone to fight to defend countries now, we have autonomous fighter jets, satellites, nuclear submarines, robots that can do parkour while carrying hundreds of pounds of gear (machine guns, rocket launchers), remote control drones that can deliver predator missiles to targets across the globe. You don't need everyone to fight to defend countries anymore. You just need a faction of the population to be into militarism and nationalism and they'll be the warrior class that commands the robot armies that will wage the warfare of tomorrow.

And looking even more forward, as corporations replace/control the government (basically already happening), the corporations will mediate armed conflicts and facilitate global cooperation in the interest of global profits. Warfare will be waged via tariffs, sanctions, and embargoes.

pie42000··on Show HN: My wife is pregnant; naturally I made a baby-name app to prepare
Very weird design choices. The like/dislike buttons are super small, the Names rated/names remaining counter takes up half the screen and seems like it should be at most 10-20% of the screen. Names are too small. BB complains about app design all the time and then creates these monstrosities
