pidg··on My best SEO tactic so far
In my experience (marketing at a small tech company), you can get results even for reasonably competitive terms. The difference is in giving a quality answer to the query.

Many (most?) tech companies fill their sites with low-quality, jargon-filled pages that don't actually answer questions - either becuase they're written by marketers with a poor grasp of the technology, or because they don't want to 'give away' their expertise.

If you actually answer the question in a reasonably full way, there is nothing to stop you ranking highly. Google values valuable content.

pidg··on Two Screens
Yeah, the one thing I took away from this timely endorsement of using two screens(?) is that Zoom has a special two-screen mode.

pidg··on How to play board games online with your friends
I wish there was a way to do this but with popular/classic board and card games instead.

My friends are, for the most part, not board game nerds. They want to play commercially successful games like Trivial Pursuit, Balderdash, Uno, etc. We've had a real struggle to find a sensible way of playing them.

Eventually we just had one household point a webcam at a physical copy of Trivial Pursuit and everyone else play via Zoom, which was less than ideal.

pidg··on Open-plan offices decrease face-to-face collaboration: study
The author of the article (and, presumably, most businesses) are living in the past.

I work in an open-plan office in a place that makes heavy use of the latest collaboration software, and it works great. There is virtually no use of email or IM internally. Just persistent chat and collaboration with Teams.

pidg··on Trust Is at the Core of Software Marketing
Everything is ass-covering. The "trust" tech marketing builds is to say "I trust these guys won't lose me my job", not "I trust their software works exactly as advertised".
pidg··on Benchmarking DNS response times of TLDs
It's also famously ethically dubious:

As the former holder of yahoo.org.uk, I can also confirm that ordinary people don't understand the difference between .org.uk and .co.uk.

pidg··on Using Firefox for a faster, calmer and distraction-free internet
Chrome.
pidg··on Using Firefox for a faster, calmer and distraction-free internet
I gave desktop Firefox multiple chances over the course of 15 years, until that day in May when every extension stopped working.[1]

That said, the mobile version seems really robust.

pidg··on Rockbox – Free music player firmware
I think I picked up my first Sansa Clip+ new for £15, and my second one (just after they were discontinued) for about £35. I imagine it's gone up again since then!
pidg··on Rockbox – Free music player firmware
Yes - I have Rockbox running on a Sansa Clip+ and it's superb. The only music player apart from Winamp that has a built-in out-of-phase stereo option! (aka 'vocal remover', though the effect is highly variable)

I thought this too, it felt more and more inevitable the nearer I got to the end of the article.

what3words is so problematic and really isn't the solution to this problem.

pidg··on Alan Turing to be the face of new £50 note
Top tip - if you find yourself with a Scottish note in England, use it in a self-checkout machine.
pidg··on Alan Turing to be the face of new £50 note
They're all very different colours, for a start, so you can know what you're holding quickly/intuitively (so long as you're not colour-blind).
pidg··on Alan Turing to be the face of new £50 note
You're kind of demonstrating why the £ design is superior to the $ though
pidg··on Monzo urges 480k customers to change their pin numbers
I believe LineageOS used to be called Cyanogenmod, and it's a fully free/open source implementation of Android. openGapps is Google Apps (like Maps) that you can install without having the Play Store.

Using LineageOS lets you do many more awesome things with your device, but financial apps (and even some apps like bus ticket apps) often don't work on this setup because it's viewed as insecure.

pidg··on Monzo urges 480k customers to change their pin numbers
As someone who is fully drunk on Monzo kool-aid, well done to them on (a) identifying the problem and (b) immediately telling customers what to do.

Imagine how long this would have been an issue if it had happened at Barclays or TSB.

pidg··on I was wrong about spreadsheets (2017)
The monthly fee for Photoshop is around 1/100th of the old retail price. That works out at about 8 years of use before you have to 'buy' the software again. Seems fair to me.

And for those who don't like paying for Photoshop - which, given it's an astonishingly powerful piece of software, probably means "people who don't actually need Photoshop" - there's always cheap or free alternatives that provide about half the functionality.

pidg··on Eon Switches All U.K. Customers to Renewable Power
As an Ecotricity customer I do wonder about this. My bills seem to go up every 6 months and are already pretty high.

Then again, I used to be with Eon and their customer service is outrageously abysmal - dropped calls, 30+ minute hold times etc. With Ecotricity I get straight through to a local human every time.

pidg··on Apple is now a privacy-as-a-service company
As a non-iOS user, can someone explain what is happening in this image?:

https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/2019060317...

Does the 'X' mean "selected" or "don't share"?

pidg··on The Geography of the Room
"Introvert" still doesn't mean "shy" or "socially awkward", however much shy and socially awkward people want to redefine it as such.

As a confident introvert who doesn't flounder in social settings, this stuff annoys the hell out of me.
