phzbOx··on Chute (YC W12) Launches A Twilio For Photos
Yeah, I don't like the Twilio reference explanation.. it's just confusing.
phzbOx··on GitHub and Rails: You have let us all down.
I have to agree that suspending the account was dumb as if he wanted to be malicious, he'd have created dummy accounts and would have committed malicious code to popular projects.

But then, going so far to say losing all trust in github.. there was a bug, it's fixed and they suspended the "attacker". I wonder what will happen in the following days with script kiddies trying to "hack" all rails website. In fact, isn't the overloading of parameters something as old as the earth that security experts would check first as a vulnerability?

phzbOx··on [dead]
What about non-video features? From my (poor) experience, it worked without tweaking on the ipad. I guess a big difference between IE6 and this is how one would want to build a different web experience for the ipad but would expect ie6 to just work.
phzbOx··on HNHiring.me: A pleasant interface for the monthly hiring posts
Might want to add / in the shortcuts to go in the search. Good initiative!
phzbOx··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (March 2012)
SEEKING WORK - remote

I'm your man if you want a highly quality django website coded rapidly. I'm comfortable with managing every part of the project (From the concept to design to the last minute bug fix), but can also jump anywhere and get the job done.

I've been coding in a dozen of languages over the years so feel free to ping me even if it's not django or python based.

phzbOx··on Tower.js - JavaScript Framework for Node.js modeled after Ruby on Rails
But who said you had to use CoffeeScript? You can perfectly use this library by writing standard javascript.

The author decided to write the source code of the library in CoffeeScript, which then compiles to perfectly valid javascript that you can import.

The analogy about Python is that you don't have to know C to be able to use a Python library written in C..

phzbOx··on Tower.js - JavaScript Framework for Node.js modeled after Ruby on Rails
CoffeeScript directly compiles into JavaScript. The fact that the source code is written in CS does not mean you can't use it with JS.

By comparison, think about Python. Some libraries use C for performance gain. Does that mean you can't use them with Python? No. These are still perfectly valid Python libraries.

phzbOx··on Headphones for Hackers
http://www.playderecord.com/images/P/sonymdr7506.jpg This is the best headphone ever made. I've 3 of those.
phzbOx··on Hack your way through Stripe's Capture the Flag
Yeah.. but I somewhat didn't realized it was the same l/p of the ssh and was trying to crack it ;) Or, more particularly, find a way around that protection to access the challenge behind it.
phzbOx··on Hack your way through Stripe's Capture the Flag
Just a word on level2, I don't think that's a hint, if you think so I'll remove this comment asap.

The login to get on the page is: level02 and the password is what you've found in level01. I.e. The challenge is not to crack that "Authorization required" dialog.

phzbOx··on Why Online Dating (Still) Sucks, and a Simple Attempt at Fixing It
Every time I pitch startup ideas to my gf, she always tells me it sucks and gives me great reasons.. but the other day, I had this idea about dating website and she kinda liked it even though she would never want me to work on something like that.

Instead of trying to use the Internet to solve a problem that is better solved in real-life (i.e. meet people and talk), why not create a whole fiction world where you can be anything you want. Basically, it's a game where you put the profile picture you'd like to have, and the 'about me' you'd like to be. So, you talk with lots of strangers and avoid the awkard thingy while still having fun and meeting people. Of course, after some time, it will naturally start to be more intimate and it'd be possible to share more real stuff.. but that's not even necessary.

Think about all the guys and girls in couple who'd like to have fun dating again but can't because they're already in relationship? Or single players who just want to have fun?

Here it is. It's rough around the edges but I hope it inspire someone.

phzbOx··on Http://(Type any keyword here).jpg.to/random
http://natalieportman.jpg.to/ Doesn't work!
phzbOx··on Convore Shutting Down
Well, "hackers that love IRC" is still a huge market if you think about all the software companies. And, even if it's a smaller one, sometime it's better to create a product that'll be used by less people rather than trying to build something for everyone and ended up with nobody using it. But I feel your concern, Grove might become a successful small business but they'll have to attack other market or build different products to continue to grow.
phzbOx··on Convore Shutting Down
It's not really about Grove vs HipChat but more IRC vs HipChat. IRC is a really old and open protocol, meaning that hackers built lots of tool around it and already love it. But it's a pain to configure and maintain it if you've got more important things to do. (Like building your app). A couple years ago, I believe grove wouldn't have stand a chance against the hacker mentality of "I'll do it myself", but now that more and more companies need to go as fast as possible, it makes sense to pay a little bit to have a service that's stable and just work out of the box.

And, for me personally, I hate HipChat clients (IIRC they run on a crap adobe version?) and I like using the existing tools I have for IRC. For instance, I've already setup everything to work on my vps with irssi, with the plugins I want, the theme I want, etc. I don't want a "new and prettier" solution to a solved problem.

phzbOx··on Why the NFL bans iPads (and other technology)
Meh, aren't them in communication all the time with people who watches the game 100km from there? Couldn't they print the papers generated all the weeks before?
phzbOx··on Hacker News clone for Python
I very rarely read policies on website.. especially for a python snippets aggregator. I'm wondering why it concerns you so much, am I missing something?
phzbOx··on Backbone vs Ember

  > Backbone by itself is not sufficient for building complex web apps.
What he meant was that for any complex web apps built on backbone.js, you have to build a layer on top of it or use additional plugins. You won't build complex applications as is.

IMHO, I consider backbone.js more as a base framework which you need to enhance before starting your project. So, in a way, every complex backbone.js app is more of a <Complete new framework> extending Backbone.js.

A proof of that is mostly the number of available plugins (which is great!!). As a matter of fact, ender could be written on top of backbone.

phzbOx··on Anonymous plans to take down the 13 root DNS servers that power the Internet?
Yes, that's the essence of anonymous.
phzbOx··on Walter Isaacson’s ‘Steve Jobs’
I've got a macbook running arch, couldn't be happier.
phzbOx··on Startup dudes: Cut the sexist crap
Here's the male version:

John’s one of the smartest guy I know, and I thought that he was a perfect pick for the role of moderator. When we selected John and he said yes, he was a handsome single man. And since that time, he’s become a handsome married man, and so I wanted his lucky new spouse to stand up. So we’ve got not only a very talented, but a happy moderator.

Would someone saying that get to the top of hacker news? I do agree that this is far from a good introduction thought.

phzbOx··on Show HN: I made a social network for musicians
1. Please let people prop even if they're not logged. I'm not saying to let every feature for no-member, but saying +1 to an artist is important in a new social network.

2. I hate it when the page loads and I'm aiming at a video in the screen, but it then randomly starts to scroll somewhere else, and it'd make me mistakenly click on the wrong video. To use the website, I had to let it load the page, count 1-2 in my head (while it'd scroll I don't know where randomly), and then I'd click on the video I want.

3. About the connect with facebook and share with facebook. For some reasons, it really scare me the way it's done. It should somewhat tell me what action does what. For instance, after registrering, there's a popup saying "Now share your profile on Facebook" [share] [cancel]. Will [cancel] cancel my registration? I had no idea.

Otherwise, great job! I'll use it and look forward to it :)

About the #1, I think it requires maybe a bit more explanation. I wanted to say "This artist is good", but didn't want to be involved into all the facebook connect, creation process, etc. Would be good to have the user helps promote the video but only force him to create an account if really necessary.

phzbOx··on Introducing Times (for Python)
Great initiative. Dealing with timezone is a pain and I totally agree with you that storing universal time is the way to go. It's a little bit like the 'validating input problem': Strongly validating and converting input/output so that the entire application can be safe. I.e. it's not to the sqrt function to validate its parameters. (Although it'd throw an exception if it fails.)
phzbOx··on [dead]
It's not about karma, he has a throw away account. He just didn't know there was an official account for that.
phzbOx··on Backbone 0.9.0 released
"A view's events hash may now also contain direct function values as well as the string names of existing view methods."

Nice! I've always been wondering why I couldn't pass a function there.

Thanks

phzbOx··on GUM: A better CLI for Git
One problem of that thought it that it will make git commands even more obscure. I.e. when a user will have to use the real git cli, they will be totally lost. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, just something to think about when designing the new cli. Maybe try to stay consistent with the commands while still making them easier to remember and understand. For instance:

  git diff STAGE HEAD
seems a bit unconventional to me.
phzbOx··on New MVC client side JavaScript framework - Serenade.js
I'm never tired of seeing new MVC js framework. I feel like there are still lots of improvement to be made. About serenade, I appreciate the simple object/arrays for models and also the innovative templating with bindings. (Instead of writing them in the html).
phzbOx··on How to set up a mail server on a GNU / Linux system
I know it's a bit out of subject but I had to do this a couple time, and now, I simply use google app. It gets the job done, have a nice spam filter and more importantly, users are already used with google services. I'm not saying configuring the server with postfix is bad, far from that, but it might be worthwhile to look at google app as it may speed up things for you and your users.
phzbOx··on Ask HN: How do I start freelancing?
There are also live events in every cities (Hackaton/Workshop/Conference/Programming language groups) that are useful to meet new contacts. Most often then not, people are looking for designers and developers to help them with their projects. Startup events are also nice places to find fun projects to work on. Lots of startups are happy to hire less known freelancers for a lower cost and help them build their portfolio at the same time.
phzbOx··on IcedCoffeeScript
About the function which is called automatically, it's a common pattern in javascript. It's used to create a new namespace/modules as block are defined per function instead of {}.

And, you are right that we're not assigning the return value of $.getJSON. Basically, once $.getJSON has finished with the request, it will call a function with the result. This result is set to the variable passed to defer. It's a bit of a brain teaser but that's the whole point of the await/defer thingy. Instead of using a callback to retrieve the result as an argument, you just write a variable after defer and you receive it.

phzbOx··on IcedCoffeeScript
Note that I haven't tested ICS so it's only based on my understanding of the examples/docs.

"Is the following right? Syntactically, "defer json" is an argument to the function "$.getJSON". So you could write it like this: await $.getJSON( url, defer(json) )"

Yes, exactly.

"'m guessing it's some convenient compiler magic that ICS does"

Yes, exactly. When you say "defer(x)", it basically returns a callback like this:

  function(result) {
    *x = result;
Code to terminate the await block*
 }
"One last thing: the description talks about "deferrals" begin "fulfilled", but it doesn't say how they are created. Now, I think they are created by calling defer."

Yeah, defer returns a callback and when you call it, it "fulfills" the await, i.e. you tell await that you're done with that async block.
