phyzix5761··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
Its important to know that McDonalds in other countries still schedules 10+ workers at a time. The wages are just too expensive in the US to justify that kind of schedule but in countries like the Philippines, where the average livable wage is $20 USD a day, it makes sense to hire 10+ workers for a single shift.

Just for comparison, the average meal price at McDonalds in the Philippines (Big Mac meal with small fries and a drink) is around $4 USD.

Hundreds of developers? Have you ever written professional software? There is no way a coordinated effort across hundreds of engineers is going to be efficient enough to do a port like this. Also, with most legacy software you can't port modules to test if your port is working. It becomes, mostly, an all-or-nothing kind of thing and with 25 million lines of code that's going to take a huge amount of effort and time.
phyzix5761··on Why Addresses Have Numbers
So every city you travel to you need to look up the baseline location? I'd rather houses and streets have numbers so I can determine how to get there just by looking at street signs.

Isn't the $1.2B deal a subsidy for conventional gas?

phyzix5761··on Degrees of Wealth
You're trying to villainize people just because of their net worth. They're human just like everybody else and as such they have desires and aversions which lead them to stress and suffering like everyone else.

Like the commenter you're replying to I know people who live in poverty who are very happy and lead fulfilling lives. I also know people who are millionaires who are constantly stressed for multiple reasons; including financial and non-financial reasons.

phyzix5761··on Degrees of Wealth
I wouldn't say they're happier. They have other things they're stressed about. An undisciplined mind finds things to be dissatisfied with no matter what the financial situation of the individual. Billionaires have desires and aversions just like people living in poverty. Yes, those desires and aversions are about different things but its the mechanism of desire and aversion that causes unhappiness not the external situation.

phyzix5761··on After Losses, Retail Investors Flock to 3x Leverage as 2x Product Are Restricted
$200 per month is the minimum to retire with $2 million+. But you can always put more in as your financial situation improves (like getting a raise). You can also make wiser decisions like not getting a $770 a month car payment (yes, that's the current average new car payment in the US).

I work with clients of all financial levels and almost all of them have upwards of $600 a month to put toward retirement/investments once they get on a proper budget and develop the discipline to stick to it.

Yes, emergencies happen but not as often as you'd think and most incidents are manageable, especially if you plan for them. Saving ahead of time for car maintenance or AC replacement, having a bucket for medical expenses or family, getting a prenuptial agreement, etc.

I've been a financial coach for over 20 years and almost all my clients who have reached retirement age have done so as millionaires using this exact method.

phyzix5761··on After Losses, Retail Investors Flock to 3x Leverage as 2x Product Are Restricted
If you invest only $200 a month in the S&P 500 from the age of 18 to 65 you'll end up retiring a multi-millionaire. It doesn't take a lot but people are either unaware of how it works or not disciplined enough to put aside $200 a month. Considering that on average Americans are spending $150+ a month on subscription services and $300+ eating out there's plenty of room in the budget for investing $200 a month.

phyzix5761··on Berkshire's $397B Bet Against an Overheated Market
I've scanned the whole S&P 500 with a DCF calculator I wrote and everything is over valued right now. DCF is not the end all of valuation but its a big part for the Buffet style of investing. The goal of an investor is not to make returns every year but to make returns in the long term. Returns that are higher than the S&P 500 as an aggregate.

Also, with the amount of cash BH is playing with those smaller distressed companies don't make a dent in their portfolio. They need the big corporations to be undervalued before they get in.

phyzix5761··on Under federal rule, colleges must leave grads better off or lose financial aid
I agree. College is not for everyone. Also, we already have an option for those of us who want to provide higher education for people who can't afford it: charities. The advantage of giving my money to a charity instead of the government is that if the organization mismanages the funds it takes me 2 minutes to switch my monthly donation to a different organization. If government mismanages funds it takes between 2-6 years for an election cycle, and even then my candidate may not win or take my needs as a priority.
phyzix5761··on Under federal rule, colleges must leave grads better off or lose financial aid
Because its usually tax payer money that is used to fund these loans. If people started declaring bankruptcy tax payers would mandate that federal student loans stop existing as a matter of principle. People hold the value that its good to help students as long as they pay back at least what was given to them (adjusted for inflation).

phyzix5761··on In Emacs, everything looks like a service
Depends what country you're in. In the US we have a culture in engineering of doing what we believe is right regardless of what the manager wants. We can afford to do that because of how highly specialized our work is and how few engineers there are (this is probably changing with AI). But in other countries managers are looking for any excuse to replace you with someone who will just nod their head and do whatever they ask.

phyzix5761··on EU Commission: addictive design Instagram and Facebook in breach of the DSA
Its great to have these opinions and I agree with some of them. But to force these beliefs on others through laws is crossing a line you will regret at some point in your life. That's because it sets the precedent for others to force their beliefs on you in the future through governmental force. Including things you may morally disagree with.
phyzix5761··on Show HN: Fast, native Mac file manager (filters, fuzzy find, 9 MB, no Electron)
I think most of us software engineering (or related) people don't use the gui interface for file management. I've been using macOS for the last 20 years and I only used the gui for files like 10 or 20 times maybe. Not sure who the target audience is but at $19.99 I would pay a lot of money to have a list of the people who bought the app.
