phyzix5761··on The safest job from AI may be writing
Equity trading is not zero sum. There are real businesses and assets behind the equities they represent that have actual value and produce actual money.
phyzix5761··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
The problem is you can't prove if AI was used or not so Debian's response is actually the most logical one. If anyone uses AI they're still responsible for what they submit.
phyzix5761··on Six months of writing code exclusively with agents
Writing code used to be free, anyone could do it with enough patience and knowledge, but now you have to pay hundreds of dollars to do this kind of thing with agents. It seems the barrier to entry has gotten more expensive.
phyzix5761··on The Dutch are filling gas wells with cement
Didn't the decisions of past generations lead us to the climate issues we have today? Won't future generations also say the same about our decisions? Why permanently destroy assets that future generations could potentially use when they discover how to make it more environmentally friendly? Seems very shortsighted to me; like we know better than anyone else and our views will never be questioned.
phyzix5761··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
Most news is unnecessary noise that most normal people can do nothing about so why waste emotional cycles reading that? For everything else, like important weather alerts, holiday events, etc, I go to the weather website for my country and for events I see signs up around the city. I keep up with tech news by reading HN, financial stuff I can find on yahoo finance, and for global stuff, which I rarely check, I read Ground News.
phyzix5761··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
Yeah, I currently live in one of those countries where businesses only post on facebook. I do fine without it. If I need something I google it and it shows up on google maps. I only see what I want to see instead of being inundated with unwanted ads from irrelevant businesses.
phyzix5761··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
As someone who doesn't use social media please explain. Is it not possible for people to just delete the apps and stop using them? Is the addiction so strong at this point that people don't have the willpower to stop?
phyzix5761··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
Debit card usage is also used for data brokering.
phyzix5761··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
Large companies provide people with jobs and fund many suppliers with their transactions/operations. Walmart and Amazon are the two biggest employers in the US.
phyzix5761··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
I'm still waiting to see how LLMs have made the world a better place because it honestly feels like its done the opposite.
phyzix5761··on Software Engineering in the Agentic Era
When code gets complex its much harder to treat each request as greenfield. You would need to rebuild dozens of features into the new page every time.
phyzix5761··on Anthropic appears to be A/B testing reduced effort levels in Claude Code
They're opitimizing for high token usage so they can charge more money.
phyzix5761··on typ.ing
Keystroke dynamics are a type of behavioral biometric identification system.
phyzix5761··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
FaceMash is a very primitive example of mass surveillance and data gathering: use people's pictures without their consent, collect the social rankings in a database somewhere.
phyzix5761··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
I hope people can see Meta is funding the other side in order to get Child Safety laws passed so they can have an out when children use their parent's device and Meta spies on them. Child Safety laws are just mass surveillance in disguise which has always been Meta's game plan since day one.
phyzix5761··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
Software will get slower as we do things beyond the current hardware capabilities which is always the case as hardware improves.
phyzix5761··on HTML Can Do That
The separation of teams happened before the BFF pattern came into existence so all frontend engineers became specialists in frameworks like React. Unless you can do it with React, FE's won't touch a BFF or anything else for that matter.
phyzix5761··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
People choose to believe what they desire and all desire eventually leads to disappointment and dissatisfaction. So, no, even if you could choose to convince yourself of whatever you want you're still not going to be happy. Also, people tend to pick the worst case scenario as a defense mechanism in most cases.

If you really want to be happy you need to let go of your preferences; your desires and aversions.

phyzix5761··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
I've learned that the more intelligent you are the more models you know and the more trust you place in them being actual reality vs just being models. This leads to overconfidence in things being a certain way so when life calls for flexibility, your rigidity will make you suffer. Cynicism develops from this rigidity.

Additionally, the more intelligent you are the more skilled you become at thinking about things logically. An intelligent person can convince themselves of anything using logic without realizing that all logic depends on unproven axioms and assumptions. Combined with cynicism, logic leads to a negative outlook on life that is hard to shake off.

phyzix5761··on HTML Can Do That
Once backend and frontend became two separate teams frontend people didn't want to keep asking backend to make logic changes for state, so frontend took things into their own hands. The mistake was making it two separate teams.
phyzix5761··on Air Theremin – a browser theremin you play by waving at your webcam
And? I'm talking about all the other things encompassing AI and Machine Learning.
phyzix5761··on Air Theremin – A browser theremin you play by waving at your webcam
AI is great. AI is a huge field encompassing many things that are not LLMs.
phyzix5761··on New paper shows that 37% of workers in US saw real wages decline from 2021-2024 [pdf]
This was at the tail end of Covid where a lot of in-person workers were out of a job.
phyzix5761··on Meta faces 'astronomical' consequences as legal fight reaches critical moment
Have some compassion man. Hindsight is 20/20. I'm sure when we're both old, people are gonna call us out for things we should have done that would have prevented the world from becoming X, Y, or Z. At the end of the day most people are just trying their best to provide for their families and for their futures with the best information that's available to them.
phyzix5761··on Meta Files Patent for Facial Recognition, Automatic Recording of People
All they have to do is create a new child company with the same tech (new name new trust) and give the glasses away for free if capturing the data is more valuable than the hardware sales. People don't have the time or energy to research every single company and product they want to buy so corporations (and politicians) take advantage of this.
phyzix5761··on Meta faces 'astronomical' consequences as legal fight reaches critical moment
People are morally complex than that. Lots of people have no idea what they're invested in and many people work for companies like Meta and Amazon because they have no other work options.
phyzix5761··on Meta faces 'astronomical' consequences as legal fight reaches critical moment
A lot of people's retirement accounts have Meta in their portfolio and they employ around 80k people. Maybe something better we can hope for is a change in management. A new CEO for sure.
phyzix5761··on What happens when an LLM never sees material beyond fifth grade?
Its even less than that. Elon Musk's $900 billion net worth would only give each American a one time payment of $2647. Jeff Bezos' $270 billion net worth would only provide each of us $794.
phyzix5761··on What happens when an LLM never sees material beyond fifth grade?
If you can afford $10 an hour you can have "people" too by that definition.
phyzix5761··on What happens when an LLM never sees material beyond fifth grade?
