photon-torpedo··on Horrible edge cases when dealing with music
To add to the list: Song titles that cannot be fully represented in Unicode. Example (also to plug my favorite band): Magma, a French progressive rock [*] band that's been (on and off) active for more than 50 years, mostly uses their own invented language "Kobaïan" where some of the characters use diacritics that are (to the best of my knowledge) not present in Unicode. E.g. there's an S with a kind of crown on top.

[*] Actually their style of music is unique enough that it's given rise to its own genre, "Zeuhl".

photon-torpedo··on Show HN: Caddy-SSH
Heartbleed was OpenSSL, not OpenSSH.
photon-torpedo··on Restic 0.13.0
BorgBackup can be made to operate in pull mode too, see: https://borgbackup.readthedocs.io/en/stable/deployment/pull-...

At work I've implemented a variant of the ssh-agent method described there. Admittedly, it requires some scripting :)

photon-torpedo··on SingleFile: Save a complete web page into a single HTML file
Love the list of notable "features". :)
photon-torpedo··on eng.mil.ru is returning HTTP 418
Wouldn't "409 Conflict" be more appropriate?
photon-torpedo··on Dell deletes Latitude CPU Throttling issue after link is posted here
Yes... there are some nice models we'd like to buy. But we are business customers of Dell, and they tell us that these have 95 working days lead time (almost 4 months). While on their regular web page for consumers it says that these are available within 3 weeks. :(
photon-torpedo··on Optimal coverage for Wordle with Monte Carlo methods – Part III

How many such (arguably) obscure words are there in the Wordle word list?

photon-torpedo··on Ask HN: Best Way to Contact YouTube
This, minus the cryptocurrency, is IPFS. (Though I've never used it, so I may be wrong.)
photon-torpedo··on Numerics applied to Casimir geometry generates intersection with Alcubierre warp
Yes, lead author is the EM drive guy.
photon-torpedo··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
> Correct. Google will give you better results with full-sentence-like input.

Please show how to use a full-sentence natural-language query to search for images of a shirt without stripes. Thanks.

photon-torpedo··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
"If they don't have bread, let them eat cake."

Edit: I think in the kind of countries that GP mentions, access to stable foreign currencies will be very restricted, especially during times where the country's native currency is in crisis.

photon-torpedo··on Restic – Backups Done Right
Why not use both? Recommendations are to have two backups anyway, one local and one remote. I use borg to make local backups to a USB HDD, and restic for remote backups in the cloud. Using different software guards against implementation bugs.
photon-torpedo··on Hundreds of ancient Maya sites hidden under Mexico reveal a mysterious blueprint
Indeed, on seeing the pictures in the article I got the feeling that these might as well be structures used for playing a kind of sport, requiring a standardized shape and size like today's football pitch etc. People today like to play or watch sports, why wouldn't the ancient people like that too?

photon-torpedo··on Masked email from Fastmail and 1Password
Already in the past I've been (ab)using Fastmail's email alias feature for this kind of purpose. Though it was a bit inconvenient as the UI always said that it takes 15 minutes for the new alias to become fully active. Great to see they now have simplified this!
photon-torpedo··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
I think this is technically possible.

Relatedly, can they jam Starlink?

photon-torpedo··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
1. Find a place that takes RMB and gives you crypto. 2. Send crypto to your wallet or foreign exchange. 3. Abroad, sell crypto for non-RMB fiat currency.

No mining needed.

China can't ban 2 (or perhaps they could by putting the great firewall into overdrive) so they are banning 1.

photon-torpedo··on Life-size camel sculptures in Saudi Arabia are older than Stonehenge, pyramids
Can't see any long neck, so my vote goes to the Star Wars walker.
photon-torpedo··on The ownership and future of Mullvad VPN
That's odd, I'm in London/UK and when I use Mullvad's London servers I can usually nearly max out a Gbit connection.
photon-torpedo··on Germany wants smartphone makers to offer 7 years of software updates
I agree it's better, just I doubt it'll be popular.
photon-torpedo··on Germany wants smartphone makers to offer 7 years of software updates
> to show his/her concern for the people

While I'd be happy for this plan to go through, I don't think most of the people will be happy with the side effects. Especially because of the spare parts requirements, I guess manufacturers will

1) Withdraw from EU market. 2) Reduce number of models on offer. 3) Raise prices.

photon-torpedo··on Mozilla VPN Completes Independent Security Audit by Cure53
Mullvad supports split-tunnel. Sure you can somehow set that up manually with the standard clients, but with Mullvad you can simply run a command with "mullvad-exclude" and the process will be exempt from VPN. Pretty convenient.
photon-torpedo··on TSMC hikes chip prices up to 20% amid supply shortage
If many miners move to another cryptocurrency, the difficulty for that network will go up, to the point that it's no longer profitable to mine it (electricity costs exceed income). Unless the price for the cryptocurrency goes up as well, but it won't magically do that just because of an influx of miners. After all, those other networks don't have the utility that Ethereum has.
photon-torpedo··on TSMC hikes chip prices up to 20% amid supply shortage
Prices for used GPUs are also inflated, though I think they have started to come down a bit. Once Ethereum moves to proof-of-stake (early 2022?) the market will probably get flooded with used GPUs.
photon-torpedo··on A breakthrough in the fight against Covid-19
TLDR: Severe Covid infection can cause histamine storm (similar to allergic reaction). Mechanical ventilation can make this worse as physical stress on the lungs can also cause histamine release. Remedies: 1) Give antihistamines. 2) If ventilating, preheat (37°C) and humidify (100%) the air. Interview cites "excellent" results but no numbers are given.
photon-torpedo··on Why wild foxes led you to treasure in Skyrim
Just installed "Nitter Redirect" browser extension. Thank you, Twitter, for finally making me avoid your site entirely.
photon-torpedo··on Hosting SQLite Databases on GitHub Pages
Same error on mobile Firefox, but mobile Chrome works for me (Android).
photon-torpedo··on Stopping FTP support in Firefox 90
Users googling for an ftp client have a good chance to land on filezilla, a client that has a history of bundling with unwanted software.

The net security impact of dropping ftp support from the browser may well be negative.

photon-torpedo··on BANCStar (2000)
Well that settles the theme for the next Advent of Code. :)
photon-torpedo··on Evaluating necessity of Covid-19 vaccination in previously infected individuals
Had avoided Covid all 2020, but in February I needed to go to hospital for unrelated reasons -- needed urgent treatment, otherwise potentially life-threatening, had to stay several days. Had three negative Covid tests during the stay, but the fourth came back positive, just a day before my discharge. So I'm pretty sure I caught it inside the hospital. :(
