Sometimes in life we have fleeting moments of presence and feelings of “I am on the path” . Could it be we are part of dual consciousness, our regular ‘I’ experiencing time moving forward. Whilst another unknown self travels backwards in time from our death to birth. Every so often we make some choice that pulls the super imposed time travelling consciousness’ into a single moment. That is where we feel those moments.

Have you ever tried using processing or p5js as a way to engage students with code? I think the visual aspect would be a great way to engage young learners. Also are you looking for volunteers?

I felt like that about a lot of education particularly science and maths, okay so yes your telling me it is a -insert term- but why is it called that, why do we need to know that, how does it fit in with a larger picture…

Fifteen minutes of lost time to a minor bug or incorrect instruction step doesn’t seem like a big issue

I think this should be part of the curriculum - it’s a daily part of the job of a SWE, introduce it in the class, make it fun and explain the frustrations and rewards when figuring out bugs. It’s not a set back of the day, it becomes part of the day, another side adventure to solve.

phonescreen_man··on MrBeast has become a viral sensation for his acts of altruism
I know it’s dark but reading some of the comments calling out how much money he has created for charities etc brought to mind Jimmy Saville, the good friend of King Charles made millions for charity throughout his life. If people get an ‘icky’ feeling about this man’s so called altruism, it’s understandable in this world.

No such thing as an addictive personality- it was invented by the pharmaceutical companies (the term) to play down the addictive effects of their drugs, doctors were told only people with addictive personalities will get hooked on the opioids

You think the US bush and Bush senior administration would of given a thought about Iraq if it wasn’t an oil producing resource?
phonescreen_man··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
Hahaha yeah right, how is porn a scourge on society, it is a niche art that a minority of people engage in, at most a right of passage for teenagers to watch when they stumble across it. Although these days probably not as hard as in vhs times. There are far bigger things to worry about than the social impact of people engaging in consensual sexual activity for the film and magazine.

phonescreen_man··on Universal Music Asks Streaming Services to Block AI Access to Its Songs
Generative music is not using samples - just as a musician who learns a song on guitar, say wonderwall and then writes a hey there Delilah is not sampling.

phonescreen_man··on New NASA Director Swears Oath on Carl Sagan’s ‘Pale Blue Dot’ Instead of Bible
I followed it, I read some of Ayn Rands books a long time ago and thought there was a lot of ideological thought that has context in this discussion. Individual responsibility vs crowd think - taking the oath on a Carl Sagan book rather than the Bible certainly seems to me an act of individual responsibility

phonescreen_man··on Tell HN: GPT-4 is not like Linux
I understand this sentiment - it’s just another step of monetized lifestyle. The internet was never free. Remember all those free internet AOL cd-roms? It was never really free. Telephone calls, same. Never had free calls either. OpenAI can be compared to a telephone network operator. They built a system that people want to use, we got to pay. However maybe the tools OpenAI are developing become so ingrained into the publics life that they eventually become public utilities. We still have to pay.
phonescreen_man··on Who is still inside the metaverse?
This quote tickled me the most - His curious IRL appearance — of a human designed by a computer or of a Styrofoam cup that a wizard decided to turn into a person but then changed his mind about halfway through — adapts unexpectedly well to the Meta-cartoonization algorithm

All in all a great bit of writing and commentary on something shit. The metaverse.

Rather than using this app, I simply have a shell function called generate that I can call anytime with a string. Mostly I use it for ffmpeg commands or occasionally asking it to explain something. For the ffmpeg commands I am finding it gets them wrong a good number of times and I have to them use a browser and search for the correct usage. It’s never too far off but it’s wrong enough. Although in my case I think I am actually using free credits on da-vinci - for what it’s worth.

Bollux no indoctrination needed and what exactly is a nice boy? Kids in poor areas find things to do, simple. Stop local governments from closing the youth centers and the kids might have something to do that isn’t stealing cars.
