But in the real world ease of use is _everything_ for the vast majority of people.
phonebanshee··on Wiring my home with fiber
How much of this is just the hacker news demographic skewing perceptions? For a lot of people here, it makes far more sense to hire someone to do home maintenance while you continue to work on a well-paid technology job. Doing a lot of home repair is a hobby/choice, not something you're doing out of necessity.
phonebanshee··on Wiring my home with fiber
How much of that is just a cost thing? Is hiring people to do home maintenance inexpensive and easily available where you are? That's usually not the case in American cities.

I have one of those too out in the garage. It runs a hobby CNC router, so it's basically bathed in very fine sawdust often. I'm astonished every time it actually boots up.

Or possibly while pros are having endless meetings about how in theory they would play 4d chess, or which varieties of 4d chess are best for career enhancement, or just evaluating proposals for outsourcing 4d-chess-playing to the private sector.

phonebanshee··on What’s the Difference Between American English and British English?
That's very much an artifact of parts of the east coast. My sister (like, totally a native English speaker from California) had the same issue.

phonebanshee··on Oracle Giving Away 4-Core 24 GB Memory Ampere Instances
Afaik AWS and GCP refuse visa gift cards, although it's been a while since I tried. Wouldn't surprise me to hear Oracle is the same.

phonebanshee··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
It's way off topic. The Q-and-A here is are about getting actual legal expertise applied to questions, not opinions about how US immigration law is flawed. You're not wrong to say it, it's just that this isn't the place/time.
phonebanshee··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
Or potentially a lot less. The idea that real estate always goes up doesn't match reality.
phonebanshee··on We’re all paying for someone else’s 4-hour work week, not ours
I'm curious what country you live in. Certainly here in the United States we never tried anything like UBI. The few things we did do continue to be successful, although the Republican party at state levels is trying to sabotage them as much as they can.

t seems like you're exactly the sort of person that both the letter and spirit of the law are supposed to help. It's not supposed to be a system just for, say, Nobel Prize winners.

They want to be an employee of a company in California, while living and working in Canada. This sounds like it's going to be complicated, and a blanket answer of "you don't pay US taxes" seems unlikely to be correct. They're also going to face issues like on day 1 when they walk into the office and they're going to have to go through the whole I-9 thing (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central) - waving hands and saying I'm going to live in Canada seems like it's not a solution.
