phn··on You Suck at Excel (2015) [video]
The video is amazing if you're a coder and might need to use excel at some point (access columns by name?! sign me up!).

However, what I love about excel is to see what it enables people without formal programming training to do with data, and using functional programming on top of that!

Is there any tool that comes even close in terms of power, accessibility and ubiquity? What would such a tool even look like?

phn··on Visual Studio Code repository is open again
The paradox of tolerance [1] is a PITA. At the end of the day a santa hat is no big deal, but by the logic of "even a single person being offended is one too many", taken to the extreme, all that is left is the lowest common denominator of what all humans tolerate (if there is such a thing).

On a more practical note, I find it hard to reason on how deal with issues like this. It's like if you try to be level headed, avoid conflict, and try to see things from the other side you already lost, because there is no corresponding empathy coming from the other side. The only solution is to give in, or deal with an offended internet mob.

phn··on Websites can change content inside a selection
It is still vastly different to paste a command you can inspect visually when copying than an unknown command injected imperceptibly.
phn··on Fake-branded bars slip dirty gold into world markets
The jeweler could be able to mark his bar as destroyed in the chain, perhaps registering the rings in a separate chain?

That way, if every entity that handles or processes gold did the same, you could have a good idea of where each piece of gold comes from.

phn··on Fake-branded bars slip dirty gold into world markets
Would it be feasible to make signed gold bars, verifiable with some kind of public key?

Or by inserting all gold bars and their journey on a (perhaps blockchain-like) database verifiable by anyone?

phn··on Show HN: Hello
In the same vein, I use https://tabliss.io/ for the simple fact it requires minimal permissions and works on firefox.

The reason I started using something like this is because the "top sites" I visit is not something I want on my screen if I'm showing it to other people.

phn··on Why Codeless Software Is Doomed to Fail
I am under the impression that low code platforms thrive because you need less skilled people to work with them, and still are able to build your app/whatever.

Yes it's still better to have skilled engineers, but they're expensive and hard to find nowadays, and not every company is even capable of hiring them effectively.

phn··on Spotify will now suspend or terminate accounts it finds are using ad blockers
I get where they are coming from, but I've never seen this kind of strategy work. If someone wants to keep listening to their songs for free they will find a way to do it, possibly with a different vendor.

There's also the possibility this is just talk to keep the advertisers happy.

phn··on Browser diversity starts with us
I agree with the post, but it should be noted that there's a big difference between Chromium -- an open source project -- and IE 6 being the de-facto browser engine on the web.
phn··on Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament
Referendums should be reserved to societal/moral issues (gay marriage, etc.). Otherwise, let's have a referendum asking the people if they want to keep paying taxes -- that should work well.

Quite extreme, I know. My point is that the government is elected to make decisions taking the economical and political consequences into account.

Expecting the general public opinion to be the end-all response to whatever decision is simply wrong.

phn··on A one-size-fits-all database doesn't fit anyone
Yep, but you can "buy" HA from any DB provider (Amazon RDS, compose, etc.) until you're big enough to dedicate resources to solve that particular problem.

My comment doesn't necessarily contradict the article. I only mean to point out that a general purpose "non-optimized" thing still fit a whole lot of companies out there, depending on their scale.

EDIT: Although I concede that yeah some DB tech makes it easier to configure HA systems, if you can live with the downsides.

phn··on A one-size-fits-all database doesn't fit anyone
Well, it generally fits until it doesn't, and that's OK.

If your scale is small enough, fiddling with specialized solutions is just premature optimization.

PostgreSQL will take you a long way before you need to look somewhere else.

phn··on How to accelerate revenue for SaaS startups
From our experience, that consent screen is wrong under the GDPR.

It asks for permission for 3 things, and while the first 2 could arguably be necessary for the "service", the third one (updates and promotions) clearly isn't. And it seems they refuse to provide service if you don't agree with everything in bulk.

This would be akin to an airline declining to sell you a plane ticket if you don't enroll in their promotional newsletter. Flat out illegal under the GDPR.

phn··on Impact – HTML5 Game Engine
Are there any active projects using this?

It seems to me this was a big thing back in the day but not really relevant anymore.

phn··on The Facebook Current
Regarding backups, I think the answer might be: "keep the backups only as long as you need".

Is it really reasonable for an active site to keep backups older than a couple of months? A year?

phn··on Apple Hires Google’s A.I. Chief
Thank you for the keywords, that actually makes some sense.

I guess the crux of the question is in ambiguous terms like "personal freedoms", etc. that the regulation says should be weighted against "Legitimate Interest" of whoever collects data.

phn··on Apple Hires Google’s A.I. Chief
Could you elaborate on GDPR being opt-out? The main point I keep reading about seems to be unambiguous separate consent for every use you use any piece of data for. (on mobile, but I’ll come back with references if needed)
phn··on Reddit’s Redesign
Also, having a private "browsing" mode for apps would be great as well!
phn··on Launch HN: CoinTracker (YC W18) – Cryptocurrency portfolio and tax manager
Well, my point still stands.

Taxes are not a financial intermediary. Taxes are something a government charges to fund a country, even though some of them may be charged when you move money around.

I understand that we can somewhat envision a self-governing crypto-nation, but even that doesn't imply lack of taxation.

phn··on Launch HN: CoinTracker (YC W18) – Cryptocurrency portfolio and tax manager
I actually think conflating cryptocurrency with not paying taxes may does not help anyone in the discussion.

Banking fees, sure. But taxes? That's a whole ideological discussion not even closely related to crypto.

phn··on Ask HN: Would like to learn blockchain tech, where do I start? What to build?
If you're really wondering what a blockchain actually is, this video is a really good intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_160oMzblY8

If you want something a bit more hands-on, I'm currently following this course: https://www.udemy.com/ethereum-and-solidity-the-complete-dev...

I have only made it through the first section, and it does a really good job of explaining the basics of Ethereum and what a smart contract actually is.

phn··on Pixel Visual Core: Google’s first custom-designed co-processor
Even with all the fancy ML stuff, the HDR "glow" is still clearly visible on most of these photos.

On the plus side, the co-processor seems programmable, which means quality can improve without the need to upgrade the hardware.

phn··on Rancher 2.0 container management platform
I had no problem running a cross-cloud cluster with rancher 1.x. You simply have to make sure the IPSec ports are open between hosts for the overlay network.
phn··on Rancher 2.0 container management platform
Does docker need anything special for GPU instances? As far as I know, rancher 1.X simply interacts with the docker agent running on whatever hardware you provide (cloud or otherwise).
phn··on Anko SQLite, a library to simplify working with SQLite on Android
When your application grows, eventually you need to de-normalize data if you want to keep having reasonable performance for some operations.

You can reach a point where it's not feasible to have everything done by joins.

EDIT: I mean in relational DBs in general. In this case, 400+ columns probably mean SQLite may not be the engine to use, regardless of schema :)

phn··on Give us your service as-is
Well, it generally mimics your OS settings, so why is it inaccurate?

The worst case is pages displaying in the same language as the rest of my computer.

phn··on Give us your service as-is
I don't know about accuracy, but please, put Accept-Language in front of location/GeoIP.

It is frustrating when Google redirects to the country I'm in.

I still speak the same languages even if I'm traveling!

phn··on Ask HN: What tech that's right around the corner are you most excited about?
The beauty of it is that ARKit also requires somewhat specialized hardware. But since apple controls the hardware as well, they can pull it off much faster than the android eco-system ever will.

They solve the chicken and egg problem, having phones with the needed hardware before the apps/demand even exists.

phn··on Ask HN: How do you feel about web scraping?
Disclaimer: Pure conjecture.

I'd say the TOS have to apply to the "service" you're consuming and not the website itself. Otherwise, what happens if you use just a text based browser? Or any other means not foreseen by the TOS?

An ad-blocker would be just the same, it's something that your browser does.

phn··on Netflix confirms it is blocking rooted/unlocked Android devices
Who is this trying to stop? People that rip their content? Because those ones certainly have other methods to do it (e.g. record video out).

If they're targeting consumers, why do they give a damn if the phone is rooted or not? As long as they pay netflix to stream the content to them?

Or is this "just" to prevent fake locations and such, to please their content producing/distributing overlords?
